The sun was just setting over the hills as Buffy and Kathlin were on their way home.
"So what is the most interesting place in Sunnydale?” Kathlin asked as they passed an empty lot several blocks from Buffy’s house.
"The HellMouth” Buffy wanted to answer, but she replied “Mostly the Bronze. It’s a club on the other side of town and that’s where we all go to hang around, other than the library.” They continued talking until Kathlin fell silent.
"Shh, I thought I heard something.” she said in a whisper. Buffy stopped too. Quiet, then, there it was again. A faint rustling noise in the bushes behind them. Buffy reached into her sleeve and pulled out 2 wooden stakes. She handed one to Kathlin.
"Whatever happens, aim for the heart.”, she said urgently, “but stay here.” She turned towards the noise.
"Look. I don’t have all night, so just come out now.” A figure stepped out from the bushes. Just the sight of it filled Kathlin with dread. As it walked under a streetlamp, she could see the evil look on its face and the strange smile that crossed it when it looked at Buffy.
"Is this dinner to go or to stay?” the vampire asked mockingly.
"I don’t know about you, but I’d rather pass. I prefer a hamburger or something.” With that, the vampire lunged at Buffy. She did the same sidestep that Kathlin did earlier, but added a flip over it as the vampire turned to charge again. When she came down, its back was to her and she plunged the stake through it, into its heart. The vampire disintegrated into dust. Buffy was about to turn when she heard another noise.
"Kathlin, behind you!” But she was too late; the vampire grabbed Kathlin from behind.
"Buffy!” she screamed. The vampire smiled, “Guess dinner’s on you tonight.” He bent down over neck to bite her, and caught sight of her necklace. It flashed in the streetlight; the blue stone seemed on fire. The vampire swung Kathlin around and looked into her face.
"It’s you!” he said in awe and backed away. Kathlin watched, but the terror was subsiding. The vampire backed to a respectable distance, bowed low, and ran off. Buffy looked at Kathlin, who was holding her necklace and staring at it, thinking. Just then, both heard another noise in the trees, this one more deliberate. Kathlin snapped out of her trance and stood, stake ready. Another vampire walked out quickly, still hidden by the shadows.
"Buffy, I heard a scream. Wha…?” His voice trailed off when he saw that the person in front of him was not Buffy, but was also ready to stake him. Buffy stepped forward “Angel, this is Kathlin. Kathlin, this is Angel, my…friend.” Angel came closer to her, to meet her, bur Kathlin’s eyes were wide with fright and she took a step back.
"She looks like a fawn, ready to flee at any moment.” he thought.
"Buffy, what happened? And who’s this? Another Slayerette? I thought Giles said only two” he joked at the last part, referring to Xander and Willow, but when he saw the look on Buffy’s face, he knew this was no time for jokes. Angel walked over to Buffy, looking for an explanation. She gave none, but moved towards Kathlin, who looked dangerously close to falling over. He read her expression and gently picked her up. She instantly fell asleep in his arms and the they walked back to the library to tell Giles what had happened.
