I just look at it this way: it’s over, and I’m over it. It’s enjoyable enough to do the fanfic thing and read other people’s work. There is other great television out there, so it isn’t like I’m still bereft that Buffy and Angel are gone. And I happen to think that Bones is one of those really great shows.
But this is what I’m going to go back to. I understand that these people are trying to move on with their careers. For them, it must suck to be typecast as a certain character/persona. But it ultimately boils down to the fact that, you can’t ignore what made you famous – you can’t snub your noses at the show and roles that made you because all you do is alienate the fans that will actually, maybe want to go see your movies. Once you’ve originated such a breakthrough role, you will always be remembered as that, no matter what you do. Deal with it. It will follow you forever, and you better learn to accept that now because it is not going away. SMG and David Boreanaz will NEVER be A list movie actors … its not going to happen. (And I’ll probably get slammed for this, but …) They are not that talented. In their respective roles, yes, they were awesome, but, I mean, if they think they can put themselves on par with Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie … and this list can go on forever, then they are sadly, sadly mistaken.
Hmm, lets see, David Duchovny thought he could move beyond X Files and become this great, sought after leading man. Wrong. His monotone, unchanging facial expression worked for the part of Mulder – that was it. Funny, David Caruso thought the same thing. He abandoned NYPD because he thought he’d make it in the movies … funny how he’s more or less playing the same kind of role on CSI Miami. Oh, and Jimmy Smits thought he could move beyond NYPD too … funny haven’t seen him in anything recently. And while the Rock has done okay for himself, he hasn’t really become the sought after leading man I think he believed he’d become. Sorry, but any role where he isn’t half naked (ala WWE) just doesn’t seem right. He’s just the Rock – the trash talking, People’s Champ of the WWE, and it’s hard to see beyond that persona. So basically, I think you get where I’m going with this rant.
I understand the need to move on. I get the desire to be something more than a television actor remembered for one role and that’s it, but it isn’t that easy, and it will follow them forever. And well, too bad I don’t feel that sorry for them. At least they’ll be remembered for something on shows that revolutionized television and will be talked about and analyzed for years to come. The real people of the world who juggle families, school, work – who really make a difference in the world by busting their asses by saving people’s lives as doctors, firefighters, police officers – by dropping everything to go to New Orleans and help with the Katrina relief effort – by donating to charities and helping organize charities – those are the people who deserve to be remembered, but no one but friends and family and the people they helped know their names – remember what they did. So, gee, can you tell that this kinda pisses me off??
So yeah, I just kinda went off on a tangent there. Back to the movie. Theoretically, a high budget Buffy movie sounds like a good idea. Realistically, I don’t think it would work. I guess I just don’t understand what they would do the movie about. Plus, let’s consider that a high budget movie would only appeal to Buffy/Angel fans. Yes, I understand that there are millions of them out there, but it boils down to the fact that you couldn’t make a big screen movie that would appeal to people who’ve never watched the shows because they wouldn’t understand it. Now direct to DVD movies might be an idea, centered on Spike or Faith, etc. And if they did it, I’d watch the movies, no doubt.
But whether they do or don’t doesn’t really matter to me. Like I said, the fanfic thing is enjoyable enough – its fun to see where all these talented authors take the Buffyverse without the constraints of television or what’s gone before.
End of excessively long rant.
