First off, I don't think either Sarah Michelle Gellar or David Boreanaz are ignoring their shows. They were a big hit for a long while.
I think their problems with the shows is that that's all they're famous for. The shows made Boreanaz famous, certainly, but that's all he is. He's just Angel. Everyone's saying, "Oh, Bones is all right, but it's just not Angel."
Of course it's not. He's trying to move on. BtVS and AtS were fantastic shows; revolutionary and very original. But these fine people are trying to move on; they don't want everything they do to be compared to something else. He wants to make a name for himself; he wants to be an actor, not Angel.
Now, moving on...
I have heard that neither Gellar nor Boreanaz are willing to reprise their roles. I have heard that James Marsters will not reprise his role unless he is the central character, eg. a Spike movie. I've read interviews with Alysson Hannigan that says that Buffy was an excellent experience for her, but she's very happy on her new series because she's around funny people all the time. This to me says that Buffy's a part of her past.
Of anything, the Spike straight-to-DVD movie sounds the most likely. I've also heard talk of a Faith straight-to-DVD movie. Joss has publicly proclaimed various times that he's finished with TV.
Nothing's confirmed yet. I personally wouldn't feel terribly broken if nothing went through; the series is over, has been for two and a half years, and if they tried to brought it back via movie or what have you, it might fail miserably.
This is a roundrobin story. Would you like to contribute?
