“So this is Sunnydale!” thought Kathlin to herself. It lived up to its name, so bright and sunny that it hurt her eyes even as the sun set.
"I gotta start calling it Home.” she thought with a smile. She turned away from the car’s window to face Joyce, who’d been talking practically the whole ride back.
"…and I’ll introduce you to my daughter, Buffy, and her friends, Willow and Xander. I think you’ll like them. They can show you around the place.” Joyce said. She’d known Karen for only a few years, after both of them had gotten married, but they had become fast friends. One night, while she was driving Karen home, Karen confessed that her husband didn’t want children. The problem was that Karen was pregnant and she made Joyce promise that if anything happened to her, Joyce would look after the child.
"I’m glad I agreed!” she thought to herself. Kathlin was very secretive and quiet, but Joyce was confident that she could open her up. Maybe Buffy could help. No matter, Kathlin seemed very polite and well brought up from what she could tell.
"Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice that you haven’t spoken of your husband? “Kathlin suddenly asked, “Does he not live with you?"
"Wow, this girl doesn’t miss a thing” Joyce thought, then said “No he doesn’t. I moved away from him almost….10 years ago."
"I’m sorry..” Kathlin started but Joyce interrupted her “Don’t be. We just grew apart and Buffy was too much for him to handle.” she answered with a reminiscent smile. Kathlin lapsed back into silence. Joyce quickly glanced at her and thought “She shouldn’t have any trouble making friends with Buffy. They’re the same age, thought Buffy is older by a few months, and they look quite alike.” It was true. Kathlin had the same slender build of Buffy, but with a little more muscle and the same expressive eyes. She seemed outwardly calm and nice, but Joyce sensed a deep bottle of emotion that threatened to explode at any time.
"I hope the two of them can get along.” she thought. They pulled into the Summers’ driveway and Kathlin got out of the car.
"I’ll get my bags.” she said and lifted the two bags with one hand. Joyce looked slightly surprised. Kathlin saw the look on her face and replied “My mom made do most of the chores around the house and the ranch.” They walked into the dark house just as the sun set behind the hills.
"Would you like anything to eat or drink?” Joyce asked her new daughter.
"Not really, thanks. I’d just like to sleep for awhile, the plane ride was rough!” So Joyce showed Kathlin to her room, which had already been made up for her.
"There’s a phone here on the desk and Buffy’s room is right next door. She should be home sooner or later, though mostly it’s later. I’ll be downstairs if you need anything.” Joyce looked at the tired girl with compassion. As Kathlin got into her pj’s and climbed into bed, Joyce thought “The mental strength of this girl must be amazing if she can even sleep after the day that she’d had, losing her parents and all!” She closed the door gently so she didn’t disturb the tired girl, but she failed to notice the shadow that moved just outside the window. A human shadow…
