From what I can see, no one likes Riley. I'm not especially fond of him either. But maybe he needs a chance for just one second.
CASE FOR AGENT FINN
- He was on the same wavelength of Buffy. He knew what it was like to fight demons, keep it a secret and maintain a normal daily routine.
- He was human. At least Buffy had hope for a future with him. Plus the non-bloodaholicism may be a plus.
- He looks dashing in a cowboy hat.
- He got on with all of the Scoobies.
- He betrayed Buffy then fled, but so did Oz with Willow! And he doesn't exactly have a hate page!
-He made good vampire bait.
- He never tried to mutilate Buffy (eg Angel), kill her friends (Angel again) or rape her (Spike)
-His bad behaviour was often due to the drugs Maggie had pumped him with.
-In general, he's a typical nice guy - considerate, loving, generous, protective and kind. He is willing to overlook his past prejudices once he has escaped Walsh's hold.
So, why does everyone hate him so?
CASE AGAINST CAPTAIN CARDBOARD
- Firstly, lets all blame Marc Blucas. He is NOT a very good actor, and so tends to produce a rather flat portrayal of what could have been an exciting action man.
- Then there's Joss Whedon. Joss was busy during Season 4 trying to juggle Angel aswell, so did not have the same time to create a new and interesting character in the way he could have.
- Then there's the Spike and Angel fans. How could Riley compete with the great Buffy/Angel affair? How could anyone? And so unfairly, Riley is disliked for stealing Angel's spotlight. And Spike fans disliked him because they wanted Buffy/Spike, and Riley was is the way! This bitterness towards Riley for these reasons seems to have influenced much of Riley's anti-fan base.
- Then there's his hair. I agree that a character with hair that floppy can rarely be taken seriously.
