Buffy and Xander ran all the way up to the roof top. Buffy began to sob as Xander held her. "Oh, Xander he will come after me. Even if he has to kill a thousand men, he will come after me." Xander, though his eyes were hallow, said soothingly to Buffy, "Buffy, thereis no Angel of the Opera! Just a solemn phantom inside your mind. It was all an accident." Buffy looked up at Xander. "No, Xander, it isn't. And now he has come back to take me away for good! I have been to his lair, I have seen his face! Can I ever forget that sight? Such a horrible, disfigured face! But yet, I felt drawn to him, with a sense of pity. His voice held a tone of love and protection. I felt safe, and my soul began to soar." Buffy actually smiled a bit, as if in a trance. Xander knew she was scared, but of what? There was no Angel . . . wasn't there? He pulled away from Buffy at arm's length to look into her baby-blue eyes. They sang a lovers' song:
Xander
"No more talk of darkness
Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here, nothing can harm you.
My words will warm and calm you.
Let me be your freedom.
Let daylight dry your tears.
I'm here, with you, beside you,
To guard you and to guide you."
Buffy
"Say you love me every waking moment.
Turn my head with talk of summertime.
Say you need me with you now and always.
Promise me, that all you say is true.
That's all I ask of you."
Xander
"Let me be your shelter,
Let me be your light.
You're safe, no one will find you.
Your fears are far behind you.
Buffy
"All I want is freedom,
a world with no more light!
And you, always beside me.
To hold me and to hide me."
Xander
"Then say you'll share with me
One love, one lifetime.
Let me lead you from your solitude.
Say you need me with you, here beside you.
Anywhere you go, let me go, too.
That's all I ask of you."
Buffy
"Say you'll share with me
One love, one lifetime.
Say the word and I follow you.
Share each day with me!
Each night, each morning.
Say you love me . . .
Xander
"You know I do."
Both
"Love me, that's all I ask of you."
They both kissed, unaware of what was happening.
"Anywhere you go, let me go too.
Love me, that's all I ask of you."
Buffy pulled away from Xander, gazing deep into his eyes. "I must return. Meet me after the performance . . in my dressing room." She hurried off to the stairs. Xander called out, "Buffy! I love you." Buffy whirled around. She ran to Xander and hugged him tightly. Together, they went back to the stage. Just as the hatch closed behind them, the Angel appeared behind a statue of an angel. His coal-black eyes were drenched in tears. His angelic face was wretched in pain. He slowly began to sing softly, crushed over Buffy's betrayal.
"I gave you my music.
Made your song take wing,
And now! How you've repaid me-
Denied me and betrayed me.
He was bound to love you,
when he heard you sing . . ."
The Angel cried out in agony. "Buffy. Oh Buffy!" Off in the distance of his mind, he still heard Buffy and Xander sing. "Say you love me ever waking moment . . ." It made the Angel snap.
"Grrrrrr! YOU WILL CURSE THE DAY YOU DID NOT DO
ALL THAT THE ANGEL ASKED OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!"
Inside the Opera house, Buffy took a bow in Carlotta's costume. The Angel appeared above the audience, laughing maniacally. He snipped the rope that held the crystal chandelier. "GOOOOOO!!" he shouted at Buffy. Buffy backed away a few steps. The chandelier crashed to the stage for 3 feet away from the orchestra, and 3 inches away from Buffy's feet.
