The music blared loudly at the bronze and the crowd was pumped. As much fun as dancing would be Buffy had bigger things on her mind. She stared at each of the other people around the table with her. She would usually call these people her friends but she knows now that one of them isn’t.
“So I got my own frat house swinging.” Xander joked
“In the basement?” Willow asked
“Yeah, I figure, why miss out on the college experience. It’ll be exactly the same except, you know, without the classes, the parties, and the people hanging around. I did by a keg though.”
“Does it have beer?” Oz asked
“Well, no, cherry soda actually. That’s close right?”
“Yeah, in an un-manly way.”
Xander frowned. Willow hugged her boyfriend tighter.
“I think it’s cool Xander,” she replied, “what do you think Buffy?”
Buffy didn’t reply. She absent-mindedly stirred her coffee. Willow pouted in worry.
“Buffy?”
“Hey.” Xander called out
This caught Buffys attention. She blinked a couple of times as she returned to reality.
“Huh?” she asked
“So what was the weather like on planet buff?” Xander asked, “Is everything okay? You’ve been kinda out of it ever since yesterday.”
“Yeah. Just got a lot on my mind at the moment is all.” Buffy replied
“You can tell us Buffy” willow said hopefully.
Buffy sighed heavily. This secret is even worse then if she never told them that she was the slayer.
“You know what let’s just not do this right now. We’re here to have fun.”
The band on stage finished their set. They thanked their audience and packed up their gear.
“I gotta go set up with the band,” Oz said, “Catch up with you guys later?”
“Of course sweetie.” Willow replied kissing him. Oz left the table and headed towards the stage. Xander looked at the women and smiled.
“So. Any of you ladies like a frosty beverage?”
“Oh I’ll have one.” willow said excitedly
“and for the Buffster?”
Again Buffy didn’t reply she went back to staring at her drink.
“Okay,” Xander continued, “that’s one drink for willow and one fun sucking void for the slayer. I’ll be right back.”
Xander made his way to the bar. Willow shifted seats and put her arm around Buffy. She brushed it off making willow even more concerned. Buffy leant on one arm and stared at the witch.
“How long have we been friends Willow?” she asked extremely seriously.
“Is this a test?” willow replied uneasily,” ‘Cause, you know, haven’t studied.”
Buffy continued to stare seriously. Willow’s playful smile dropped from her face.
“Four years. What’s this about?”
“You would hold back anything from me would you?” Buffy asked
“No of course not. Buffy we’re best friends . . .I think. Are we?”
Oz watched from the stage. Buffy had been acting extremely weird tonight and he suspected that she might have found out. This couldn’t happen not when he was so close. From the front of stage Devlin walked up to Oz.
“Everything’s set. Were ready to roll on your word.” He said quietly
“You haven’t said anything to anyone have you?” Oz replied
Devlin looked at Oz in a mixture of worry and confusion.
“No. Course not.” he replied
Oz walks up to Devlin his expression extremely serious.
“If you’re lying to me you know bad things will happen.” Oz replied.
Devlin takes a couple of steps back.
“I’m telling you Oz-man I told no one.”
“Then things should be cool.” Oz replied coldly
Xander watched Buffy from the bar. She definitely hadn’t been herself and, from the conversation she was having with Willow, she must have found out something she shouldn’t have. He would have to speed things up if his plan was going to be a success. Xander turned back to the bar. One of the female staff walked up and stood in front of him.
“Okay, I can get you what you ordered but it’ll take a couple of minutes.”
Xander shrugged and smiled at the girl
“Take you’re time. I’m in no rush.”
The girl smiled in return. She threw a dishtowel over her shoulder and left.
Willow frowned. She sat defensively next to Buffy.
“What’s with all the questions? Did I do something wrong?” she asked Buffy
Buffy looked at the scared girl. She dropped her head and cradled her, now cold, coffee. It was at that moment that she realized that she didn’t like being on the sidelines. Buffy figured that if she hurried she could find Angel before sunrise. Willow tilted her head to match Buffy’s eye line.
“What ever it is Buffy I want to help.”
Willow tried to put her arm around Buffy again. As she did so Buffy stood up quickly and gathered her things.
“I’m going to head off. Tell the guys . . .” Buffy said hurriedly
Buffy looked at willow briefly before turning away awkwardly and heading for the door. Willow sprung up and followed.
“Buffy?” she asks.
Buffy briefly turned back to her.
“Will,” she replied sadly, “let’s . . . not okay?”
Buffy continued her journey to the door. Outside she broke into a sprint. She wanted to find Angel before anything bad happened
Willow sat back down and glared at the door. Buffy was acting not like her self. She must have found out. She had no other choice but to speed up her plan before the slayer discovers it’s full purpose.
