Buffy sat at her desk and tapped her pencil in frustration. She looked at her black page and hopped that it would magically fill with words so that she wouldn’t have to do it manually. After a few moments she slapped her pencil down.
“I give up,” she announced, “I got nothing.”
Willow sat on her bed and worked on her laptop. She looked up at her friend in concern.
“You’ve only been studying for, like, two minutes Buffy.”
“And do you see how much that helped? Let’s face it Will college would be a lot better without the work.”
“Then it wouldn’t be college,” willow pondered, “it would be like a really expensive hotel with too much drinking.”
Buffy looked at her page once more. She shook her head and stood up.
“That’s it I’m shirking. My responsibilities are officially shirked. C’mon will lets grab the others and head to the bronze.”
“Okay. Let me just finish my report.”
“I thought you had finished all your stuff?” Buffy asked as she slipped on her jacket.
“Well, yeah, but with all this free time I decided to do some extra curricular study.”
“You scare me.” Buffy replied curiously.
The phone rings. Willow answers it happily.
“Hello? . . . Giles, hey how’s everything go . . . what? . . . Yeah she’s here.”
Willow hands the phone to Buffy. Buffy takes the phone and sits lazily on her bed.
“Hey Giles how’s the life of leisure treating you?” she asks happily
Willow watched as Buffys happy expression quickly changed to a worried one.
“Sure . . . I can be there in a few minutes.”
She hung up the phone slowly.
“What is it?” willow asked
“I don’t know. He sounded really worried though. Told me to head over to his place.”
“So I guess we’re not bronzing.”
“No. I better see what’s up.”
Buffy arrived at Giles’ house about an hour later. Usually it would have taken a little longer but the tone in Giles’ voice told her to be there quickly. She knocked on the door and waited. Inside she heard two different voices. One of them was Giles’ the other she wasn’t sure about. She heard footsteps approach then the door opens. Buffy smiled at her former watcher. She dropped her smile when she realized that he wasn’t smiling in return.
“Giles?” she asked
“Buffy . . . please, come in.”
Buffy wandered into Giles apartment. The place was covered in open books showing pages of vicious looking rocky demons. Giles returned to his armchair and sad down heavily. Buffy looked at the entire scene.
“What’s going on Giles you sounded really weird on the phone. And what’s with the heavy research mode? Is there an apocalypse coming you haven’t told me about?”
Giles motioned Buffy towards the couch.
“I think you should sit down.” he replied sadly
Buffy folded her arms and looked angrily at Giles.
“No. I think I should remain standing and you should tell me what the hell is going on.”
“Buffy . . . Please.”
The desperation in her ex-watchers voice began to fill her with doubt. She followed his request and sat down.
“Giles, you’re scaring me. Just tell me what’s going on. What’s with all the books? And . . . are you drinking?”
Giles didn’t reply. He sipped on his scotch and gestured towards the open folder on the coffee table. Buffy picked it up and read. Her breathing began to quicken as she slowly shook her head. She looked up at Giles as tears began to roll from her eyes.
“What is this?” she demanded, “some kind of sick joke!”
“I’m sorry Buffy . . . I only just found out myself.”
Buffy went back to the report.
“No. . . No, no, no, no. This isn’t right. It’s a demon! Some demon is trying to mess with us Giles. That’s what it is.”
“No it isn’t,” Angel said from the archway leading to the kitchen, “I got that report from a reliable source inside the L.A.P.D.”
Buffy swung around to the brooding hero. Seeing him only added to her shock.
“Angel? What are you doing here?”
“The same as you,” Angel said as he walked over and looked at the report, “ I’m trying to figure out what happened.”
“Wait I don’t understand. How did you know about this?” Buffy asks
“A friend of mine got a vision of this murder. He told me that this happened about five years ago.”
“Five years?”
Angel sat down next to Buffy.
“All we know so far is that it was some kind of lava demon. We’re not sure which one. Giles was helping us search.”
“Unfortunately, Angel, the description your friend gave us is sketchy at best,” Giles continued, “there are many varied species of lava demon but I have never herd one with the capability of mimicking a human.”
“Keep going,” Angel insisted, “I’ll hit the streets see if I can find anything.”
Angel stood up and headed for the door. After a few moments Buffy stood up and joined him.
“I’m coming with you,” she said with determination
“No, Buffy, you’re too close. I can handle this on my own.” Angel replied
Buffy folded her arms and shook her head. She glared at her ex boyfriend viciously.
“You’re damn right I’m close,” she yelled, “You don’t get to do this anymore Angel this is my town. You can’t come into my town, tell me one of my best friends has been murdered and replaced with a demon, then expect me to go home and play happy slayer.”
Angel tried to put a supportive hand on her shoulder but she brushes it off.
“Buffy, I can handle this. I understand if you don’t want to believe me but if this report is right then we don’t want to tip off the demon that we know.”
“He right Buffy,” Giles replied, “at the moment we still have the element of surprise. It is imperative that we keep it that way until we find out the entire story.”
Buffy glared at the both of them. This was more then she could stand.
“You expect me to sit around and just wait?” Buffy snapped
“Yes I do Buffy!” Giles replied, “if this murder truly did happen back in 1994 then this demon has had the opportunity to study you for three years, possibly longer. If you go charging in now you could be killed.”
Buffy fumed internally. As much as she wanted to put as much pain on this demon as she could she knew that the both of them were right. Angel placed his hands on her shoulders. As he did so she moved in with a hug. She began crying in to his jacket.
“I promise you I’ll find out what it is and stop it.” Angel consoled
Buffy looked up at him.
“I know. I just wish it wasn’t . . .”
“We all do.” Angel replied
