It is funny how death can reverse one’s life. One moment someone’s there, the next they’re not, it scares us how simple it is and how devastating it can be. Near-death experiences can invert someone’s entire existence. Priests can lose their faith and Atheists can, all of a sudden, find it.

After coming close to losing our lives, we completely change, if not for a minute then for an hour, if not for an hour then for a day, a week, month, year or lifetime. We look into the mirror and vow to change the person we see, at least for the time being, until we recover from our wounds and the scars fade away.

Children grow up wanting to be a carbon copy of their favorite mythical superhero. They strive to shield themselves from a vicious, unkind world with images of powerful, just men overcoming the cruel villains. What children don’t see is that “superheroes” are just as exposed to the horrors of the real world, maybe more so. We may be strong and powerful, resilient and strong-minded but we also hurt, bleed, cry and scream. We were once children who attempted to shield ourselves from the evils that lurked in the shadows. We all tried to save ourselves from, what we knew, was coming.

It’s so funny how slowly time moves when you just want it to end. Angel held the bloodstained blade in his hand. His face changed back. He bore a look of horror and shock. Buffy instinctively grabbed the wound on her stomach, she tried to keep the blood in, but it kept coming out. She looked into Angel’s eyes. He saw a tear drop slowly down her face as she hit the floor.

Giles apparently had just been able to struggle out of bed, made his best attempt to run down the stairs.

“Bloody hell. What happened?” Giles said as he clutched his side, he turned to the kitchen and saw Buffy’s bloody form on the wood floor.

Both Giles and Angel ran to her side. Giles searched the vicinity for cloth or a towel for anything. Willow came running over with a white towel in her hand, she handed it to Angel. He put it against the wound, Buffy let out a gasp of pain. The towel almost instantly changed to a deep red. Angel ran his hand through Buffy’s hair.

“You’re going to be fine.” Angel said. He wasn’t sure if he was lying to Buffy, Giles, Willow or himself.

“I’m s-s-so s-s-sorry.” Buffy gasped with tears in her eyes. She turned her head to see Xander who had just crawled over to Buffy’s side. He was covered with blood; assumedly Anya’s, whose inanimate form still lay in the corner of the room.

Angel felt Buffy’s breath fading. “Don’t worry about it.” Willow said with a sad smile as she grasped Buffy’s hand. Xander along with Giles smiled and nodded.

“Yeah, we wouldn’t have even made it close to this far without you Buff.” Xander said suppressing tears.

Buffy smiled. “I l-love y-you guys.” She managed as she coughed up blood. He breathing continued to fade until Buffy slowly closed her eyes and was gone forever.

Willow leaned in, brushed a few stray hairs out of Buffy’s face and kissed her best friend on the forehead. “I love you, too.” She whispered.

Angel broke down, he cried hysterically, with his back against the wall in front of Buffy’s body. He mumbled, “Please forgive me,” over and over again. He held his face in his hands and cried for the first and last women he would ever love with every bit of his being.

Willow cried on Xander’s shoulder and stared at the lifeless body of the best friend she ever had.

Giles knelt down and felt her pulse, there was none, she was truly dead. He bowed his head to pay respects to the best slayer he had ever trained and the best young woman he ever had the honor to raise and treat as his own.
