Chapter 24
By the time dusk came around, Buffy had vetoed every idea the group had. Nothing they thought up satisfied the Slayer. Her plan was looking more and more attractive. Oz seemed okay with his part, as far as Buffy could tell from his blank face. She assured herself if he had an problems, he’d voice them.
While the others planned, Buffy had been working out the kinks in her plan. She’d come up with a pretty respectable assimile but there was still a large margin for error. All plans had that margin though. If they didn’t, that’s when things tended to go horribly wrong. Always have a contingency plan.
The plan was, Oz would change in the same crypt Buffy had locked him in. The Slayer would hang around in the cemetery, looking bored, waiting for Spike to strike. When he eventually showed, Buffy would open the crypt door, setting Oz loose on the unsuspecting vampire. As soon as Spike was down, she’d somehow, lock Oz away and face Spike herself.
She wasn’t afraid of the British vampire, she knew she could kick his ass in a fair fight; she just didn’t believe he was going to make it a fair fight so why should she? No point in setting herself up to fail.
So, Buffy found herself standing in Restfield, outside the same crypt as the night before, waiting for Oz to change. An odd sound reverberated in Buffy’s ears and it took her a moment to realise what it was. Oz was pawing at the door, trying break free. The wolf's whines were muffled by the concrete door. Showtime.
Buffy, knowing full well she couldn’t hang around the crypt waiting, she began to wander around the graveyard, giving the pretence she was hunting. Maybe the action would draw out some opponents. She probably wouldn’t have long to wait for Spike to show up. He’d practically given her an engraved invitation and she was ready to party.
Buffy glanced down at her feet and grimaced. Wearing her new shoes probably hadn’t been her best idea to date. If Spike trashes them, it’s just one more thing to stake him for.
**************************
Three hours later and Spike was still a no-show. Oz’s whines were giving the Slayer a headache and not even one vampire had passed through the graveyard. All up it made for a very cranky Slayer. At the moment, she was ready to turn around and take out Oz. The whining and occasional growls were driving her nuts.
All of a sudden her spider sense kicked in. Damn Xander. I’m starting to think like him. Her SLAYER sense kicked in, alerting her of a danger nearby. She sprang to her feet, ready to take out the danger.
A lone vampire crossed the cemetery, not even noticing the Slayer. Her muscles tensed up but before she could pounce, her self preservation instinct kicked in. Trap. A lone vampire, walking unconcernedly, in distance of the Slayer… how could it not be a trap?
The vamp disappeared from sight but Buffy didn’t relax her pose. She slowly reached for the stake in the waistband of her pants, scanning the graveyard as she did. Either the vamp hadn’t left or there was another because the tingling hadn’t disappeared. She didn’t have to wait long to find out.
Spike walked into view, unarmed and alone. That gave Buffy pause. She wanted to kill him-so badly- and he wanted to kill her, so why was he coming towards her unarmed? His long black coat swished out behind him as he stalked the length of the cemetery, pointedly working his way towards Buffy.
She fell into a fighters stance, not trusting the vampire even the smallest bit. As he approached her, he reached into his jacket. Buffy tensed with the action, thoughts of concealed weapons flitting briefly through her mind. He noticed and held a hand up in surrender. His other hand remained in his jacket. He slowly removed his hand, showing Buffy the cigarette he had been retrieving. He looked amused.
When her demeanour didn’t change, Spike reached into his jeans pocket and pulled out a lighter. He lit the cigarette and put the lighter back, before taking a deep drag and blowing the smoke into the cold night air. Buffy shivered slightly. She hadn’t noticed how cold it had gotten.
‘Well, pet,’ Spike began with a grin. ‘Had a feeling I’d be seeing you here tonight. It’s pleasure I must say. How’s peaches?‘
Buffy looked at him in confusion. Peaches? ‘Cut the crap, Spike. I’m not here to chat. Why’d ya send the knife?’
‘I felt like some company,’ he puffed out another cloud of smoke. She eyed it distastefully. ‘Figured you’d be up for it.’
Buffy scowled. ‘Screw you, Spike’ she said scornfully.
He laughed. ‘I heard what happened with the Delta team,’ he spoke disinterestedly but Buffy could sense something hovering under the surface of his words. Anger? Worry? No, it was something else.
‘Yeah, so?’
‘Wanted you to know that it wasn’t me that told them where you were,’ he shrugged as he took another drag.
Buffy looked at him thoughtfully. Maybe it was worry riding underneath the words. Worry for his own skin. He doesn’t want Angel coming after him.
‘Is little Spikey afraid of the big bad souled vampire?’ Buffy taunted in a baby voice. If you ignored the whole-standing-in-a-graveyard-with-a-vampire thing, this would actually be kinda funny.
Spike growled in warning but Buffy ignored it. She relaxed out of her fighters stance but didn’t relax her guard. She wasn’t that stupid.
‘This has nothing to do with peaches,’ he seemed somewhat miffed.
Buffy shook her head. He wasn’t lying, she could see that. This had nothing to do with Angel so what was going on? Her mind was still screaming Trap.
Her Slayer sense kicked into overdrive and she wildly looked around the cemetery as vampire after vampire appeared in her line of vision. Her eyes widened then settled on Spike's blank face. Oz seemed overly quiet in the crypt behind her.
‘You didn’t think I came alone did you?’ he smirked.
‘I know I didn’t,’ she mirrored his expression. She meant Oz but she was saving him for later. Instead she held up her stake. He took no notice of the weapon.
‘You see, pet,’ he flicked the butt of his smoke away then took a step forward. ‘As you know I need your head to win Slayerfest. Unfortunately, there are still two more teams out there, gunning for you and while usually I‘d be all “yeah, kill the Slayer“ I really don’t like to share.’
Buffy took a step backwards and almost tripped on the stairs leading to the door of the crypt. Her mind flicked to Oz then to the fifty vamps surrounding her.
On one hand, if she let out Oz, there was no guarantee he wouldn’t just go for her; on the other hand, if she let him out and he went for the vampires, not only would it save her and hurt Spike, it would most likely drop down the number of vamps in Sunnydale by a small margin.
She mentally shook herself. Now is so not the time to worry about the plan. Spike was muttering something and Buffy realise she missed most of what he said. When she caught, ‘then Dru said what about just chopping the head, clean precise but of course, it had to have more finesse than that for a Slayer,’ she was glad she missed the rest of his speech.
The vamps were getting restless and Buffy wondered nervously how long Spike could control them for. He looked up at her and flashed her a bright smile. ‘Tsk, Tsk, Tsk, Slayer,’ he shook his head in mock disappointment. ‘No running away, luv.’
Buffy stopped her ascent up the stairs. Luckily, she was right where she needed to be. She pulled the blue handled knife from her boot. ‘What was the point of this?’ she held it up for him to see.
‘Present,’ he said simply, still grinning, however the smile had turned a lot more menacing.
Buffy held her ground. ‘Whose blood?’
‘Some girl,’ he was beginning to get frustrated. ‘What’s with the bloody twenty questions, luv?’
‘I just wanted some answers before you died…again,’ she amended with a shrug.
Spike laughed, deep and long. ‘Kill her.’
The vamps advanced but Buffy was faster. She slammed open the crypt door and Oz sprang forth with an almighty howl. The vamps stopped, stunned, and in that split second, Oz had taken out an eighth of them. He used his claws to rip through their bodies, incapacitating them then moving onto the next one.
The vamps tried to attack but Oz was too strong. His jaws locked on one of the vamps necks and he bit down. The vamp screamed in pain as the werewolf chomped, seconds later he was dust. The wolf had bitten all the way through.
Buffy jumped into the fray, first off staking the vamps who had unluckily been downed by Oz. Task done, she slammed her stake into an unsuspecting vamp before hand standing over a gravestone and staking the vamp hiding there. More vampire’s came after her but they were frightened and no match for the revved up Slayer. She staked them all.
Eventually the vamps realised they were losing and began to flee. The only one that remained was Spike who thus far remained untouched. Soon it was only her, Spike and Oz left in the cold graveyard. Buffy kept her gaze on Spike, even as she watched the bigger threat, sniff around the dust on the ground. Any second now the beast would turn for her and Spike.
Spike lunged before the wolf did. Buffy reacted instantly. She swung round and delivered a high roundhouse to his chest, then uppercut him to the jaw. The British vampire staggered back then came at her again, enraged at the attack. He slammed his fist into her face and Buffy felt her lip split under the force. Then he grabbed her by the back of the shirt and threw her into the side of the crypt.
Buffy went to get up but remained where she was as she noticed Oz stalking towards them. The wolf’s eyes were on Spike and for the first time Buffy realised the wolf hadn’t made even one attempt to get at her all night. Maybe Oz had more control than he realised.
The wolf swung in her direction. Then again, Maybe not, she thought, wide eyed. It pounced towards her and she scrambled up from where she still laid on the grass. The wolf slammed into the wall, just where Buffy’s head had been seconds earlier.
Spike’s laughter rang around the graveyard, pissing Buffy off. She ran towards him, leading the recovered wolf. Spike's laughter stopped as Buffy ran towards him, a smirk crossing her beautiful face. She flipped over the blonde vampires head and landed gracefully behind him as the wolf crashed hard into him.
The two struggled on the ground, each trying to get the upper hand. Buffy could tell the wolf was winning. Spike knew it too. The vamp was frantically trying to throw the werewolf off but it was no use.
Buffy stood silently, watching the struggle interestedly. So far, Spike had managed to keep its jaws away from himself, but that one task was requiring all his strength. There was no way he was going to throw Oz.
The wolf and vamp wrestled for another five minutes before Buffy had had enough. She could see how weak the blonde vamp was and knew he wouldn’t be able to fight her. She stood behind the wolf and locked an arm around its giant neck. She pulled with all her might and with Spike’s failing strength she managed to manoeuvre it off the bleeding vamp. Through Spike’s ruined shirt she could see the deep claw marks Oz had made while Spike was otherwise occupied.
While Buffy locked Oz away in the crypt again, Spike remained where he was. Another set of deep gauges adorned her arm by the time she returned and she could see Spike reacting to the smell of her blood. His game face slid into place and he rolled over and tried to get up. She rested a foot on his back and pushed him back to the ground.
‘So Spike,’ she leaned forward. ‘You were saying?’
He tried to knock off her foot but the wound on his stomach had sapped his strength to that of a high school boy. She pressed down. ‘I’m not stupid Spike. What’s the real reason you sent the knife?’
He laughed painfully. Blood covered the grass beneath him. ‘Why do you think Slayer?’
He tried to turn over and Buffy let him. His yellow eyes stared into hers. ‘We came for you.’
A sound behind her had her turning around. Something hit her head hard. She fell to the ground stunned. The last thing she heard as she succumbed to the darkness rising in her mind was Drusilla’s mad laugh.
I don’t know when I’ll be able to update. I have 10 000 words on a story due in for school soon so I have to work on that. Will try to write more of this.
