“Prue!” yelled Doyle, “Prue! Slow down!” He ran after her carefully dodging the plies of sewage.
Suddenly Prue slipped and fell. She made no move to get up, she just lay there sobbing. Doyle knelt and pulled her into his embrace. “It’s alright,” he said, “It’s gonna be alright.” He held her till she lay quiet against her chest. Pulling gently away, he looked into her eyes that were starting to fade to black. He brushed a strand of hair that had fallen out of her ponytail behind her ear. “Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked.
Prue closed her eyes she could feel them starting to change. Pushing the evil that lived inside her deeper down she opened them back up as they returned to normal. “What that I’m a freak?”
“You are not a freak,” Doyle replied.
“I was afraid,” she answered, “I was afraid that if you knew who I was, what I was,” she paused and corrected herself, “What I am, you would reject me for what was inside me. For the EVIL that’s inside me. I wouldn’t have been able to live if you did that, because I…I love you too much to live without you in my life.”
“You don’t have to worry,” Doyle said pulling her to him in a fierce embrace, “I could never reject you, not even if Satan himself lived inside you. I love you too. Besides me dad’s a Brachen demon. I’ve been hiding it from you for the same reasons. And you’re not evil. Evil may reside within you, but evil does not rule you. I’ve never met a kinder gentler person. You are the furthest thing from evil I’ve ever seen.”
Pulling away, he cupped his hand gently under her chin and lifted her head to look her in the eye. Slowly he leaned down and kissed her. As she wrapped her hand in his hair, responding and deepening the kiss the entire world fell away. All that mattered was his hand on her waist, sliding around to cup her lower back so he could pull her flush against him and her hand on his chest caressing it slightly. Soon they both hand to break away for air and as they did reality fell back into place. “Damn,” they both said in unison.
Doyle was the first to come to his senses. “Let’s get back up there,” he said as he stood up. He held out his hand and helped her up. “Time to go face your demons, no pun intended” he said squeezing her hand.
“None taken,” Prue replied as she took a deep breath, “Let’s get this over…DOYLE!”
Releasing her hand, Doyle had clutched his head in pain and was slumped against the wall. A few seconds later, he opened his eyes and took a few ragged breaths.
“What did you see?” Prue asked touching his cheek.
He looked up, his eyes wide with fear. “Nothing good,” he replied, “Let’s go.” He grabbed her hand and they ran back toward Angel Investigations.
