A chorus of screams pierced the air of the dark alley near the Bronze in Sunnydale that night. As the dust cleared the Slayer stood triumphant, hands on hips. She sighed and looked around her.
“Never do give up, do they?” She murmured to herself. Buffy tossed the now well used stake aside, shoved her hands into her pockets, and continued walking toward the Bronze. The moment she stepped over the threshold she felt his eyes on her. She waited for him to appear as he usually did but when he didn’t she started to look around for him. She stopped herself thinking,
Buffy immediately saw the table where Willow and Xander were sitting and she quickly walked over to join them, dropping her bag on an empty chair.
“Hey, Buff.” Xander called cheerfully as she approached. Willow turned around and smiled. “Hi, Buffy, you look frustrated. Anything wrong?”
Buffy’s reply was casual. “Naw, I just ran into a rather unfriendly Fang Gang is all.” She subconsciously scanned the area for Angel.
“He’s been looking for you.” Willow put in quietly.
Xander’s head popped up. “Who? Oh, yeah, Dead Boy.” Both girls ignored him. Buffy quickly looked down to inspect her appearance; black leather mini-skirt, teeny black tube top, black high-heels, and to top it all off, just in case he would notice, Angel’s black leather jacket that he had given her.
“How do you know he’s been looking for me?” The Slayer asked curiously.
“I’ve seen him scanning around for you several times already.” Willow answered instantly.
“Do you have any idea where he is now?” Buffy begged hopefully.
“Sorry. Not a clue.” The hacker answered truthfully.
“Okay, why is everybody ignoring me?” Xander whined.
Buffy made a cat-hiss sound. “You dis Angel-We shun you!”
“Well he is dead ya know.” Xander grumbled back. The two girls rolled their eyes and started chatting about the upcoming formal school dance. Feeling excluded Xander walked over and tried his best to flirt with a blonde hottie that he’d seen around school before.
Angel looked on from the corner. He thought. < I should have walked over and struck up a conversation the instant she walked in that door! We should be making out by now! That _is_ what I came here to do tonight, isn’t it? I mean, to see her and make sure she was doing all right? > He didn’t want to admit it but a part of him was still afraid that he would somehow hurt her. He watched and marveled at the Slayer’s elegant beauty and graceful style in silence.
Xander came back to the table looking extremely defeated. “Hey, Xander! Where ya been?” Willow looked up. He thought angrily but answered calmly. “Learning an important lesson.” He said somberly.
“What’s that?” Buffy prodded; amazed he’d even dare learn anything.
“Sonya can’t speak a word of English!” He gestured to the blonde foreign exchange student. The girls cracked up. Just then Buffy spotted Angel out of the corner of her eye. She blinked and he was gone. “How does he do it?” She marveled. Xander thought she was talking about him and piped up rudely. “Well, it’s not easy I assure you-“ Willow cut him off. “What?” She asked, confused.
“I saw him, then I blinked and he was gone again!” Buffy ground out, exasperated.
Xander looked around. “Who? Oh him again! Geez can we ever change topics?” He complained. Both girls gave him looks.
Buffy’s face lit up. “Oh! There he is again!” She said excitedly as she saw him with his back to her.
“What are you going to do?” Willow asked.
“I’m gonna go over there and see why the Hell he’s been avoiding me like the plague-the idea of it gives me a wiggins!” Buffy stood up and walked away as Willow and Xander chuckled and struck up a conversation. Buffy marched over to where Angel was standing and snuck up behind him. “Boo!” She jumped up and grabbed his well-muscled shoulders. He spun around in surprise. Before he could even register who it was she pressed her warm lips against his cold ones; willing her warmth into them.
Angel blinked and then chuckled as he wrapped his strong arms around her and held their kiss. Her arms wound up around his neck ass the kiss became more and more passionate. All of a sudden she started pulling away from him. His first thought was; But Buffy simply spun her cross necklace, the one Angel himself had given her, over her shoulder and explained to the concerned look on his face, “I didn’t want to burn you.” before launching her lips upon his once again.
The kiss finally ended and they walked over to an empty table and sat down next to one another. Buffy leaned her head against Angel’s well-muscled shoulder and asked, “Now, why have you been avoiding me?”
“I haven’t been avoiding you!” He instantly protested. She gave him a ‘yeah, right’ look and his handsome face softened. “Look, just because we’re going out now doesn’t change the fact that I’m a vampire.”
“And THAT doesn’t change the fact that I love you more than life itself.” She countered as she leaned in for another kiss. Angel’s hands moved over her back until his fingers connected with the cross. He winced in pain. Buffy’s eyes filled with concern and compassion. “Oh! Here.” She unclasped the necklace and tossed it over her shoulder. Willow, even though her back was to them, caught it. Xander looked at her in amazement as she slipped the cross into Buffy’s slaying bag that was sitting on the chair next to her. Buffy turned Angel’s chin so he was facing her. “No more avoiding me?”
“No more avoiding you.” He promised solemnly. Buffy smiled and pulled him into another passionate kiss. She sighed and allowed her hand to caress his strong chest, leaning her head against it, listening, even though she knew she would never hear a single heartbeat coming from the chest of the dead man she loved.
Without thinking, she fell asleep. Angel smiled and carried her over to the table where Willow and Xander were sitting. Willow chuckled when she saw her friend, fast asleep in the arms of the vampire. “She said she ran into a rough Fang Gang just before she came in.”
“Really? Is she all right?” Angel asked, sitting down into an empty chair with Buffy sleeping peacefully on Angel’s lap, leaning her head against his chest.
“She’s FINE! Look at her!” Xander exclaimed, pointing to the happily unconscious Slayer in Angel’s arms. Angel chuckled softly as he looked down into Buffy’s beautiful, caring, LOVING face that always held him entranced. He hugged her closer to him protectively. Buffy smiled in her sleep, cuddling up against Angel’s chest.
“Aww!” Willow cooed. Xander rolled his eyes and Willow snapped at him. “Oh, come on! You’re just jealous!” She accused.
“Me? Jealous? Why, that’s absurd!” He managed to look offended. “Why in the world would I be JEALOUS when I have HER?!” Xander gestured toward Cordelia, who was at the moment flirting with another guy.
Willow snorted. “You doof! Do you even know what ‘absurd’ means?”
“No I do not.” Xander admitted sadly and they all cracked up.
“Shh…” Buffy murmured sleepily. Angel was about to say something to her when he realized she had already fallen asleep again. He smiled, content at just listening to her heartbeat for hours as Willow and Xander argued pointlessly about something or another. Angel was happy just to sit there, with Sleeping Beauty tucked safely in his strong, caring arms.
