As the were lead to a table in the steak house, Ratty excused herself and headed to the bathroom, despite not having a reflection, she stood alone in front of the mirror and stared at it. "What am I doing with them?" she asked herself, the flush of a toilet broke her thought and she stepped to the side of the mirror, not wanting to give herself away by not having a reflection. A large woman appeared from a cubicle and smiled warmly at her, Ratty's stomach growled fiercely in response and she fought the urge to vamp out and feed. The woman engaged her in idle chit chat as she washed her hands and reapplied her make up, Ratty could feel her face contorting and the comforting feel of fangs pressing against her lips. "I've time for a starter." she grinned as her hand clamped over the woman’s mouth...............
Outside at the table, Giles and Willow were whispering urgently. "There's something not right here. Seriously making with the bad." Willow said, her face revealing the full extent of her fear. "Joan is not all she appears!" Giles reached out and placed his hand over hers, "Is that why you didn't tell her your real name?" Giles asked, his voice full of concern. "She's hiding something, I don't think she's the best person to ask about undertakers!" Willows voice was shaking slightly. Before Giles could respond a handsome young waiter appeared beside him, "Good evening Sir, Madam. My name is Jeff and I will be your waiter this evening" he began, obviously still new enough to have enthusiasm about his job, "Would you like to hear the specials this evening or are you ready to order?" Giles smiled, not at him but at the way he could be thrilled about waiting on people, even after so many years in the States, he still found amusement in the cheerful demeanour of waiters.
"Thank you Jeff, but we're waiting on our friend" Giles said, "We will be ready to order shortly." Jeff nodded and returned to his post by the bar, eyes darting around the room for any sign of a patron in need. "See what I mean!!?" Willow almost shrieked at him when Jeff was safely out of earshot. Giles looked at her, confusion apparent over his features. "Sorry?" He asked, unaware of having missed anything at all.
"He blinked funny." Willow said and tried to demonstrate with her hands. "That’s just not normal!" Giles looked back over at Jeff but from this distance, he couldn't tell. He did see Joan returning from the bathroom and turned to Willow, "Lets see if she can help us and I'll have a look when he returns." Giles said, finishing his sentence in a whisper as Joan took a seat with them. "So, you ordered yet?" she asked as she snatched up a menu. "Not yet, we waited for you." 'Jasmine' replied, still eyeing her with a little suspicion. Ratty nodded a 'thanks' and looked through the menu despite now not being at all hungry she had to eat something. They sat in silence for about five minutes, each contemplating the gastronomic delights that the menu offered. When they were ready, Giles signalled for Jeff, who crossed the large floor like a whippet. "Are you ready to order now Sir?" he asked again, his pencil poised over a fresh sheet in his pad. "Yes, thank you Jeff. I'd like the peppered steak, medium and a side order of onion rings" Jeff wrote his order rapidly before looking up to Willow questioningly, "Erm, well, I'll have the 8oz rump please, with a side salad." she closed the menu and handed it back to him, watching as he tucked it under his arm. "And how would you like it madam?" he didn't look up from his pad as he asked her, "Like it?" Willow asked, realising what he meant as soon as the words had left her mouth, she blushed instantly. "Oh, erm, well done please." she mumbled and picked up a breadstick. Jeff smiled politely and continued to write before looking up at Joan, "8oz, rare.... No, make that blue." she said licking her lips, suddenly hungry again. Jeff finished writing and returned his gaze once again, to Giles. "And to drink?" he asked,
"I'd like a beer please." Giles said, looking towards Willow, "'Jasmine?'" she looked up at him, then across at 'Joan' "White wine, thank you." she smiled.
"Beer sounds good to me!" Joan ventured without further prompting. Jeff nodded and hurried off again. Giles looked over at Willow and smiled, nodding slightly to acknowledge he had seen the peculiar blinking style of their waiter. "So, what's with the funeral directors then?" Joan began, slumping back in her seat and looking expectantly at Giles.
The front door slammed and Alex dropped into his lazy boy. "That went well." he said to the now empty room. Louise had been furious when he'd finally gotten home, she'd given his dinner to the dog, who was now snoring contentedly in front of the fire and after much yelling and screaming, she had stormed out to stay with a friend until he could work out what it was he wanted.
Alex begrudgingly got up and went over to the TV, it blared into life playing the same song he'd heard in the lift on his way home. He smiled at the memory of the red head and headed back to the kitchen for more beer and popcorn. On returning to the living room, he ventured to the cupboard where Louise kept the photo albums, this red head had to be in a family picture somewhere and he was going to find her.
After searching through ten albums, he sighed heavily; "The woman takes so many pictures of nothing. A tree. Someone’s dog. A duck." he slammed the album down and stroked the dogs head fondly. "Oh well, I doubt she'd been in there anyway." he told he as her tail thumped solidly against the floor. Bored of his unfruitful search, Alex rose and headed to the bedroom, the dog close on his heels. "C'mon Anya," he said, "Fancy a quick run in the park?" she barked joyfully and he changed into jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt before grabbing her lead and disappearing into the night.
