Chapter 3

The moon was already full as Daniel walked through one of the darker back alleys. He was dressed in black and was carrying the enough of hardware to make and action movie star cry. Tonight he decided to focus his efforts near the Bronze. Keeping to the shadows he made it to the end of the alley adjacent to the entrance. He waited and watched as the people paid the door fee and go in. as soon as the line thinned out enough he moved quickly to the other side of the street. He drew the largest gadget from the side of his backpack. It was a spear gun use mainly with fishing and snorkeling but it had been modified to handle thin wooden stakes. He loaded in the first stake and waited. It didn’t take long before the first scream came from the back alley of the bronze. He moved swiftly he moved around the building and saw a vampire attempting to bite down on his first victim. Daniel moved himself to a closer location. When the vampire had his back to him he took aim and fired. The thin stake flew swiftly through the air and hit the Vamp Square in the back turning him to dust. The girl quickly got to her feet and, not wasting any time, ran back inside before anything else attacked her. Daniel walked slowly down the alley and picked up his stake. He examined the end of it closely and shook his head

“Think I need to make it sharper.” He said to himself and he places it back in the quiver with the other stakes. He turned around and was confronted by three other vamps that came to investigate.

“I think it worked just fine.” The lead vamp said as the other two rushed him.

They pushed him roughly against the wall as the lead vamp moved in closely. He sniffed at him and smiles. He moved his head three inches away from Daniels.

“Mmm I smelly fear on you boy.” He said menacingly “we have enough problems in this town with one slayer with out children going around playing wannabe.”

Daniel struggled against the vamps holding him against the wall. As the lead vamp was talking He managed to move to one of the canisters attached to his belt. He yanked it off pulling the pin. And dropped it to the ground. It rolled along the ground and stopped at the feet of the lead vamp. Daniel closed his eyes tight as it went off.

The alley was filled with a blinding light. The vamps became disoriented which gave an opportunity for Daniel to escape. From the pouch strapped to his left leg Daniel pulls out a collapsible nightstick used commonly by military and police. He extends it to reveal that he has improved it to include a stake at the end. Danny rushes in and stakes the lead vamp for he has any time to recover. As he turns to dust the other two advance knocking him down. Daniel rolls out of the way as one of the two remaining vamps pounces. He quickly gets to his feat and draws the gun from the holster strapped to his right leg. The gun he had aimed at one of the vamps was not a typical side arm. It closely resembled a small super-soaker but at the end of the barrel was a small black box with claws. He pulled the trigger sending the box sailing into the stomach of the nearest vamp. Moments later the vamp collapsed to the ground convulsing wildly as twenty thousand volts of electricity coarse through his body. Seizing the moment he rushed in and plunged the stake through his heart. The last vamp took him by surprise and pushed him up against the wall. Just as he was about to go in for the kill he felt Daniel shove something into his stomach.

The vamp smiled evilly and said, “you missed slayer boy!”

A few moments later he felt something sticky run down his shirt. He pulled back and gave Daniel a disgusted look

“Hey!” he yelled in an annoyed tone “this is my favorite shirt!”

Daniel didn’t stop to apologies he bolted down the alleyway as fast as he could

“Yeah you better run!” yelled the vamp “if I ever find you I’m gonna kill you. No wait I’m going to give you my laundry bill then I’m going to kill you!”

He was happy with his taunt but it was short lived because one second later he was engulfed by a huge fireball and promptly turned to dust.

Daniel had a hard time keeping his eyes open as he entered his home. As he walked slowly down the hallway

“Mom! I’m home.” He yelled

He doesn’t know why he does this. Perhaps it’s to make himself feel better. In any case no matter how many times he says this he knows that he is never going to get an answer. The hallway had 3 doors leading into their respected bedrooms. The door neared the entrance and the lounge was his room. The room next to that was his mother’s, which he kept immaculately clean. The memory is still fresh in his mind the last time he made a mess I there. She would get all angry and incredibly British and there was one time that Daniel swears that his mother was going to give him ‘what for’ whatever that meant. He stood for a moment and stared into the room. After taking the moment Daniel dragged his equipment to the third room down this corridor the room that used to belong to her.

He remembers everything about her. What they did together, the stupid meaningless fights they would get into, and the moments where they just sat and talked for hours. The thing he remembers the most was the day that she came into his life.

Her name was Raleigh Webb. One day five years ago as he returned home from school he walked into the living room and saw his mother talking to a girl he had never met before. She was a tall girl with fiery red hair and deep brown eyes. She listened intently as her mother was talking. Lillian, Daniels mother, saw him at the door and ushered him over. He stood awkwardly next to his as she introduced him to her. He looked from Lillian to rally and asked innocently “is she going to fight the monsters mom?” Lillian smiled sweetly and replied “not yet sweetie. But some day she might. That’s why she is going to stay with us now so that I can teach her better.”

Teacher was the word she used around him back then but now he likes to call her by her proper title ‘watcher’. Daniel opened the door to the room and switched on the light. What used to be Raleigh’s bedroom was now a makeshift workshop.

Ever since an early age Daniel has had a thing for gadgets. He spent a great deal of time in his room pulling things apart to try and find out how they worked. By the time Raleigh arrived he was able to pull apart and reassemble almost anything he could get his hands on and almost always did to the annoyance of his mother.

He places his pack in the corner and started to unload. He placed the various weapons and tools on the wall mounts he had installed. He placed the modified spear weapon on the workbench. He headed back to the lounge room and sat himself in front of the T.V. next to it was three videocassettes. He picked the one marked “for Daniel” and placed it in the machine.

The image of his mother flicker onto the screen she was sitting composed on a chair facing the camera. She had her light brown hair up in a bun and was wearing the formal suit she often wore giving her the appearance of a stuffy old English teacher.

“If you are watching this,” she said softly, “then I must be dead.”
