Chapter 5

Buffy stared in horror at the sight before her. It was the most terrifying thing on the planet and she backed away slowly. She looked frantically around for a weapon but none came to hand. The thing in front of her was getting closer. She wanted to scream but she was a Slayer; Even in death she would not make a sound.

‘Buffy, stop being such a drama queen, sheesh. It’s just a green salad,’ Willow rolled her eyes and Buffy watched with trepidation as the monstrosity was put in front of her. Gunn had taken the initiative and ordered everyone some food, unfortunately he assumed the women wanted salads. Buffy didn’t really do salads per se. She was more of a burger and fries kinda gal. Lucky Willow and I ate earlier, she thought, a look of disgust on her face as she peered at the plastic container. These things are toxic and of no nutritional value.

She could feel Willow’s glare burning into her and she reluctantly picked up the plastic fork that came with it and lifted the salad to her lap. She peeled off the lid and looked at the wilted greens, praying she didn’t have to eat them but Willow as still glaring at her. Manners were imploring her to eat at least some of the salad but it was just so… Uh!

Giles stood up and the room fell silent. Buffy breathed a sigh of relief. No one will notice if I don’t eat it, she thought and she put it back on the table, untouched. Willow’s glare continued to burn on her back as she innocently turned to focus on Giles. She felt another gaze on her and her eyes went straight to Angel. He was watching her actions intensely, frowning as he looked at the salad container and Buffy blushed. He probably thought she was starving herself. Her name being called had her turning quickly and almost falling out of the chair she was in. ’Huh? What?’ she asked wide eyed, hoping she didn’t miss anything too important.

Giles took off his glasses and pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and rubbed the lenses frantically. ’Please pay attention, Miss Summer. I wondered whether there might be anything else you could tell us about your time from being called to this moment,’ he asked calmly, his tone belying his actions.

‘You want to know about my life? Okay,’ she shifted uncomfortably in her seat. ‘I can tell you a few things. What do you need to know?’

‘Well, er, we were kind of hoping you could tell us a bit about yourself and about what you have been doing since your watcher died and any other background information you think could be helpful in correcting this mistake and making sure it never happens again,’ Giles slipped his glasses back on and stood up straight, watching Buffy thoughtfully.

She glanced quickly at Willow before facing Giles again and she shrugged. ‘There’s not much to tell honestly. I was born, sixteen and a half years later I became a slayer. I died, my watcher died. One day I heard some girls were going missing around L.A and when I went to check it out, I got taken. These guys showed up,’ she indicated the AI team, ‘late I might add, and here we are,’ she looked at him expectantly and he mirrored her expression, obviously wanting more details.

Buffy sighed and ran her hands through her hair. ‘Look, Giles. My life since I became the Slayer has pretty much been hell. My friends ditched me, my boyfriend dumped me and, no one says so, but I just know the late nights and the sneaking out caused the strain on my parents marriage. I’m sorry if I don’t want to let you know every single little detail of my life.

‘You may find this beneath your notice but I am nineteen year old girl and while I may like to talk about myself a lot, I don’t want to tell you things like how I dusted my ex boyfriend once on patrol or how a pack of vampires managed to take out half the football team because I went out on a date. Something’s I just can’t talk about,‘ she caught Giles’s sympathetic stare and couldn’t handle it. ‘I’ve gotta go,‘ she stood quickly and back towards the door. Willow got up to follow but Buffy shook her head. ’I need to think about something’s, alone, I’ll be back later,’ with that she turned and practically ran out.

***************************

Everyone sat there for a few moments after Buffy left, trying to process what happened. Gunn was the first to break the uncomfortable silence. ‘Nice one Giles,’ he snorted and the room broke into furious chatter, Angel and Willow the only two not taking part. Both sat there, serious expressions on their faces as they thought about Buffy’s abrupt departure. Both were worried and both were restraining themselves from running after her.

Angel looked up and noticed the same expression on Willow’s face as on his. He nodded towards the door and she nodded. They stood and left the room, no one noticing they’d left, save Lorne who wore a huge grin on his face.

******************

Angel and Willow walked quickly through the streets of L.A. trying to find their friend. Willow hadn’t made a sound since they’d left the hotel and Angel knew she was lost in thought. How much had Buffy told her? How much did Willow know about the blonde Slayers life? They life he would probably never be a part of. The Slayer… Slayer… his heart would have skipped a beat had it beat at all. She was destined to kill his kind, she fought against creatures like him nightly, no to mention some of his kind killed her watcher and almost killed her. What would she think of him now? Would she scorn him, stake him, treat him with disdain or would it not matter to her?

He had to find her, to ask her these questions. Maybe there would be a chance for a vampire and a Slayer. Weirder things have happened, right?

He heard a noise and his head came up sharply. Willow sensed his stillness and froze. Her gaze roamed the alley as he listened quietly. Both were hoping for a sound that would lead them to Buffy. Luck was not with them, however, as three massive demons jumped down from the rooftops of the alley the two were passing through.

Angel shoved Willow behind him as he stepped forward and faced the demons. They sneered at him, at least he thought they did, and spread out, effectively surrounding the vampire and frightened girl. The demons were hideous, even to Angel who’d seen more demons than most. One was a sickly green colour with small spikes covering its arms and a small tail coming from its lower back. It had three rows of sharp teeth, reminding Angel of a shark and it gave off the smell of rotting fruit. Altogether a very unappealing package.

The second demon was much the same as the first, only instead of the sickly green colour it was an oily black colour, had one row of teeth and smelt much worse. Thank god he didn’t need to breathe. Poor Willow, he thought briefly.

The third and final demon was an anomaly. It was something Angel had never seen before. The demon, a scarlet coloured demon, was covered in what looked to be small welts. Puss wept from the welts as they opened and closed. The yellow pus sizzled and hissed as it fell to the ground and after a few moments, Angel realised the pus acted like acid. It had eaten into the ground. Can’t let Willow near that one, he thought grimly. It’s going to hurt.

The black demon was the first to attack while the other two circled the vampire. Angel tried to keep a watch on them both and fight, which was a bad idea, he realised as the demon punched him hard in the face. He vamped out, yellow eyes shining savagely in the night and he attacked the demon viciously, the extra strength and speed giving him an edge.

The demon dropped to the ground and Angel spun around as Willow screamed. The green demon had a tight hold on her and the acid demon was approaching. Angel looked frantically around for a weapon. Finding nothing, he made a split second decision and latched onto the acidic demon with his hands. The pus began to burn on contact and he winced but continued to pull the demon roughly away from Willow.

It turned towards Angel and punched him, hard, knocking him to the ground. The vampire was stunned. Where did the demon get that kind of strength from? He got to his feet and went after the advancing demon again, getting nowhere. Despair started to form in his gut as he realised nothing he tried was working, the demon was hardly hurt from Angel’s attacks yet the vampire himself was barely standing.

He lunged at the demon- a last ditch attempt- but it kicked him out of the way, returning to it’s task as Angel hit the wall and slid down it, blood burbling from his mouth. Willow screamed again when Angel hit the wall and all of a sudden the demons paused. The acidic demon’s hand dropped to its side. Willow’s eyes were wide with fear an Angel struggled to stand. He didn’t know what had caught their attention but was grateful for the few precious moments it bought them

Angel took a step and fell as Buffy entered the alley, sword clutched in her unwavering hand.

****************************

Buffy saw Angel fall and she gripped the handle of her sword tighter, restraining herself from running over to help him. She took in the situation, the demons, the downed vampire and that’s when she noticed the trapped Willow. Her eyes widened and looked at the parts of Willow she could see, noting that she was so far unhurt. Her eyes narrowed and she glared at the two demons surrounding Willow. ’You are so going to regret that,’ she said coldly.

She glanced towards Angel who was staring at her with a mixture of relief and horror. She winked at him and returned her focus to the demons and her new best friend. She’d be damned if was going to lose yet another person from her life.

She lifted her sword as the demon turned towards her, seemingly forgetting the redhead. ‘Slayer,’ it rasped and Buffy winced. Was there anyone who didn’t know who or what she was. She almost slapped herself as she realised that, duh, she was a girl… in an alley… holding a sword and coming to the aid of a girl and a vampire. What else could she possibly be but a Slayer? She was too obvious, she realised with a sad shake of her head. The weapons were a dead- excuse the pun- giveaway. She need a more subtle approach.

‘Yeah,’ she raised an eyebrow. The demon took another step towards her and Buffy’s grip tightened further around the hilt of the sword.

‘We have been looking for you, Slayer,’ it rasped slowly, its voice reminding Buffy of stones rubbing together.

‘Uh huh. That would be why?’ Buffy cocked her hip and twirled the sword menacingly. It was a nice sword, one of Merricks and it was the only thing she’d kept when he’d died. Everything else she’d sent to his family. Except his watchers diary. That she had hidden away.

The demon didn’t get a chance to answer as the heavens opened up and rain began to fall, soaking everyone in seconds. The demon, the one with boils or something equally gross all over it’s body, began to smoke and Buffy screwed her nose in disgust. It began to flail about and Buffy’s eyes widened in shock as the demon began to melt in front of her eyes. Out of the corner of her eye she noticed Angel had gotten to his feet and was also staring at the demon. Within minutes the demon was a sticky -and very smelly- mess on the ground. ‘Wizard of Oz eat your heart out,’ Buffy quipped. ‘The wicked witch had nothing on this guy.’

Buffy looked up and noticed the remaining demon still had a firm hold on a struggling Willow. She took a couple of steps forward and lifted her sword, twirling it for show. The demon was too unsettled after watching its companions die and it released the redhead and ran fast towards the end of the alley. Unfortunately for it, Buffy grinned as she lifted the sword, its size hindered its movement. She threw the sword with all her might. It buried itself in the demons back, toppling it over. She grinned again as it hit the ground and twitched for a few moments before becoming completely still.

‘I am good,’ she said approvingly. Angel and Willow looked at each other and Buffy raised an eyebrow. ‘What?’ she asked innocently.
