Hank was standing at the doorway trying to figure out a way to smooth everything over. When he had left Buffy was still breathing. ‘I didn’t really hit her very hard.’ Hank thought to himself. ‘That lying brat, she’s just doing this to suck up as much attention as she can. She wants to make me look bad in front of all these people.’ Hank, who couldn’t see the truth past his drunken stupor, also didn’t realize a nurse had come up behind him.
“Excuse me sir, you are not supposed to be here right now. Visiting hours are over, and someone is already staying the night with her.” It was Star who had come to see why Buffy’s heartrate had elevated. Spike looked up when the nurse started speaking and immediately tensed. Was Hank going to leave without a fight?
“That’s my fuckin’ daughter and I’ll see her if I want to.” His slurred voice rang loud around the room.
Nope, he wasn’t.
Spike, who was filled with rage, jumped off of his gurney, and went to face the man who had cause his angel so much pain. Before hank could do anything, Spike hit him square in the jaw knocking him on his butt.
“Why?” Spike yelled at him. “Why did you do this to her? Look at why you have done.”
He grabbed Hank by the neck and pulled him over to Buffy who was waking up from all the noise. Star had realized what Spike meant, and now knowing how Buffy had gotten this visit to the hospital in such poor condition, ran for security. Spike wasn’t done with Hank yet though. Spike pulled him away from a terrified Buffy with a sickening crack to Hanks arm. He got on top of Hank’s back and elbowed him in the back of the head until security physically pulled him off. He then went over to Buffy’s side trying to calm her down.
“What did I ever do to you? Bastard. Why did you do this to me? Why was I not good enough for you?” Buffy was screaming at the top of her lungs at Hank, who was handcuffed, and didn’t say anything to defend himself. Spike was hugging Buffy who was holding her ribs, and told the security to get him out of the room.
When they were gone, Spike tried to get her to lay back down. Buffy who was in tears was also exhausted. When he was sure she was asleep again he went to talk to the nurse.
“He did that to her didn’t he.” Star asked. Looking at Spike, she was wondering what kind of relationship he had with the patient.
“Yeah, he has been for a while I guess and we never saw it. She hid the bruises pretty well. I tried to help, you know? I tried to get her to tell me what was going on, and the minute she started to open up, her father came and pulled her into the house. When he came back out I went in to see what happened, and I…I found her…like that.” Spike broke into tears and stopped talking.
Star pushed him back into Buffy’s room and turned the lights off. “I figure that he won’t be back he has been arrested and will be spending the night in jail for intoxication but I suggest you find out all the details and take him to court.” And with that she turned around and was gone.
Spike settled back down next to Buffy and slept until noon the next day.
