A Watcher's Burdens

Rupert Giles sat at his desk with his face stuck in another musty book.
"This cannot happen!" He yelled as he slammed the book shut.
Giles got up and began to pace, he ran his fingers through his hair, he always seemed to do that when he was nervous.
"No,no, no, no, no!" He said getting gradually louder and ending by slamming his fists down on a table, "There must be another way!".
Faces were beginning to appear at the library windows. Finally he saw three people push through the gathering crowd and burst through the doors.
"Hey! What was that for missie?!" Xander yelled out of the doorway, then he turned his had to Giles and the two girls, "You know, some girls can pack quite a whallop,".
"Yeah, like Buffy," Willow said.
"She doesn't count," Xander argued.
"Hey, Xander, Willow, what alternate world are you guys in?" Buffy inquired, waving her hand in front of there faces.
"Oh yeah! Giles, whats all the yelling and screaming and virtually disturbing everyone in Sunnydale for?" Xander asked in his usual laid back kind of way.
"Oh, nothing much, the prophecy just says that on this coming Saturday I'll be, how you say, killed in one of the battles of good and evil in which Buffy will win, but you will be left without a Watcher."
"Oh, well, thats bad, come on Giles, kick and scream all yu want, let it all out," Xander encouraged.
"Xander, will you shut your yap!" Buffy ordered.
"Yes'm" He obeyed
"Well, are you sure it's you? I mean, did it say, Giles, or just, the Watcher." Willow asked hopefully.
"There can be only one Watcher in existence at one time, but there must always be a Watcher present in the world, therefore, when Merrick died, I was just being born." Giles explained.
"Oh please don't mention Merrick, I was just getting over him," Buffy sighed.
"Wait a minute, whose Merrick? An old boyfriend or something?" Xander asked.
Buffy moved to sit down, the others followed her example.
"Merrick was..." Giles started.
"Let me do it Giles," Buffy cut in, "Merrick was my Watcher before Giles, he was the one that convinced me that I was the Slayer," Buffy stopped to wipe away a tear, "He was the first real friend I ever had, I'm not even going to tell you about the friends I had in L.A.. Merrick was always with me when I went ou to to slay, only one time did he get hurt, he was trying to protect me, unfortunately, he was trying to protect me from Lothos, the vampire king, when Merrick tried to dust Lothos, Lothos turned the stake around and plunged it into Merricks heart. I was never really able to get over it."
"Ooh, harsh," Willow said.
"Ditto," Xander said too, not knowing exactly what to say.
"But we have to get to the problem at hand." Giles urged, "Dying would mean failing the Slayer, I can't do that! I just can't!!" Giles yelled throwing a book across the room.
Quite unexpectedly, two figures walked through the door. One had raven hair, with red streaks, a long red dress and large hoop earings. The other was shabbily dressed with a long, tarnished overcoat, a hat, and a beard. Buffy gasped, Giles stood up.
"Who are these people?" Xander asked.
Then the man said, "My name is Merrick."
