Faith sat between Mikkel and Dawn on the couch, with Willow and Kennedy on two chairs opposite. You could cut the tension in the room with a knife.
“So,” Willow began. “Mikkel, why don’t you tell us a little bit about yourself.”
“Well, I grew up in Brussels, where I lived until now, when I left with Dawn.”
“And what is it you are going to do with Dawn now that you got her here?” Kennedy said, accusatorily.
“Kennedy!” Dawn said, a look of embarrassment on her face.
“Kenn!” Willow said at the same time.
“What? I just wanted to know.” Kennedy shrugged, trying to appear innocent. “No one thinks it a bit odd that an almost total stranger would want to come half-way across the world with a girl and expect nothing in return.”
“Willow, make her stop!” Dawn whined, looking frantically at the redhead.
“Sweetie, don’t you think you are being a little hard on him? We just met him,” Willow urged.
“And so did Dawn!” Kennedy said, pointing at the teenager on the couch.
By this point Mikkel sat uncomfortably, shifting on the couch. Dawn was a shade of red that was so bright, her face looked like it was on fire. Willow was trying desperately to keep everything under control, Kennedy was glaring a hole through Mikkel’s head, and Faith was sitting with a grin on her face, enjoying the whole scene.
Thank god, the phone rang. Kennedy went into the kitchen to answer it. After several minutes, she came back. “I have to go out tonight with the new group of Slayers. We are hunting a demon they found a couple of nights ago. They said there has been a sighting, so we need to go check it out.”
“But we have company. Do you think it could wait ‘till we get this whole thing figured out,” Willow said, disappointed that Kennedy had to leave again tonight.
“Faith, you could come with me if you want,” Kennedy said.
“I could change my connecting ticket and hang out here for a couple of days.
Sure, I always love a new demon to pummel,” Faith said with a shrug.
“Do you think I could go?” Dawn asked hopefully.
“I don’t know,” Willow said. “I don’t think Buffy would really approve.”
“Come on, Will,” Dawn begged. “I’m almost eighteen now and you know I can fight. Pleeeasee?” she whined.
Willow thought for a moment. “Kennedy, what do you think?”
“Well, we do know she can fight and Faith and I will both be there. I think she’ll be safe. We could use her brain in the research category, too.”
“Well, alright” Willow conceded. “But please everyone, be careful!”
“Can Mikkel come?” Dawn asked.
“No!” the three older women said in unison.
Dawn slumped back in her chair, defeated. “So, when will Buffy be her?” she pouted.
“Not till the morning. She couldn’t catch an earlier plane,” Willow answered. “So when are you all off?”
“We should leave soon. It’ll be dark in about two hours,” Kennedy said, rising to her feet.
“Willow, you’re not coming?” Dawn asked, surprised.
“Not today,” Willow said sadly. “I don’t really go out on these adventures anymore. I am more the stay at home type nowadays. So it looks like Mikkel and I will have a night in. Have any requests of what we should do?” She said, looking at Mikkel.
He just stared at all of the women around him, fairly perplexed about what was going on. “Well,” he began, “we could make cookies and watch a movie.”
“That sounds great!” Willow answered, perking up at the thought of sweats and a film. “Can we watch Moulin Rouge?”
***************
Giles sat looking through volumes and volumes of chronicles. Flipping the pages of larger book, he came across something. “I found it!” he said, closing the book and heading out the door.
