Buffy and Xander were on the plane. Xander sat nervously playing with his tray table. He let it go down, he put it up, he let it down, he put it up, he let it down, he put it…
“Xander!” Buffy said, putting her hand on his to stop his incessant fiddling.
“Sorry,” he said, forcing a smile. His insides were in knots. What was he going to say to Willow when he saw her? Sorry I just walked out one day without saying goodbye. Sorry I never called, never wrote. Sorry about blocking all the spells you used to try and find me. So… how’s life treating you? Xander began to incessantly tap his foot.
“Xander, please!” Buffy said, annoyed. “Can’t you sit still? What’s up with you?”
“I can’t help it, Buffy. I’m just nervous I guess. With everything that has happened, I just never thought I could go back. What am I going to say?”
“Well you could start out, ‘Hey Willow, it’s nice to see you. I’ve missed you,’” Buffy said soothingly.
“But what if she hates me? I would hate me if I did what I did to me.” Xander looked miserable. Not to mention that two years of drinking and running had made him look tired and much older. He barely looked like the old Xander Buffy remembered. It saddened her to see her dear friend look so broken, so full of heartache.
She put her arm through Xander’s and laid her head on his shoulder. “She could never hate you, Xander. None of us could. You’re our friend and nothing will every change that. Willow loves you, and no matter how much you run, you can’t escape that. I love you too, Xander.” She snuggled her head deeper into his shoulder. She had missed him so much, she didn’t realize how much till she was here beside him.
“I hope you’re right Buffy.” He put his head on hers and took her hand. Closing his eyes, he felt the plane take off and they were on their way, no turning back. “I love you too, Buffy,” he whispered, drifting off to sleep.
