Buffy summers pushed a strand of sun-bleached hair behind her ear as she surveyed the cheerleading squad attentively as they tried out a couple new cheers, yelling out praise and criticism when necessary. The new cheers were for the football game coming up next week. “Okay, that’s enough for today,” she said with a smile as they went through the last of the new cheers for the forth time. “See you all at next practice!” she called and started over to the bleaches and pulled a brush through her dampish blonde hair.

“Well that was exhilaratingly boring,” the brunette muttered irritably as she flicked her damp dark brown hair behind her shoulder and gathered up her things. Buffy looked at her fellow cheerleader and good friend with sparkling green eyes. Buffy loved cheerleading, it was her passion, the only one she ever let anyone know about anyway.

“What was that Cordelia?” she asked sweetly. The brunette suppressed a smile and sighed loudly and mournfully.

“I said it was a waste of time,” she said loftily. “I could have been watching them train!” she added looking over her shoulder at the footballers, who were sending admiring glances their way.

“Like you need to spend anymore time doing that!” Buffy said with a grin. “It’s all you ever seem to do!” Cordelia rolled her eyes at her friend,

“You just don’t understand, you can never spend enough time watching them practice!” she said sadly then changed the subject. “So, have you met the new guys yet?”

“Not yet,” she answered thinking of the glimpse she’d seen of the two guys that morning, promptly and firmly pushing the unwanted thoughts of them out of her mind.

“I heard from Cathy that the guys are from Ireland and England and that they’re tall, gorgeous an thoroughly delectable,” Cordelia said happily thinking about the new guys. There weren’t that many dateable guys left and it was wonderful when new guys came into the town. It was good for the sport.

“Well you and the rest of the female population are welcome to fight over them,” Buffy said. She was not even thinking about guys or getting a new boyfriend, not after the last two mistakes she’d made. Riley and Parker she thought distastefully, ignoring the pain that even now stung at her heart at the thought of them. She had thought they had loved her but had soon found out they didn’t. Riley had only wanted who he thought was her, the image that she portrayed and he couldn’t cope with her independence and who she really was and he had left in the end; and Parker…he’d been after plain sex.

“What the Queen of popularity doesn’t want a go with the newbees?” Cordelia asked slightly confused.

“I don’t want a relationship at all at the moment; not a meaningless or a meaningful one. Not after Parker and Riley,” Buffy said grimly.

“Not those ass’ again!” Cordelia said hotly and loudly. “Buffy I told you that they aren’t worthy of you and you should just forget about them,” Cordelia said as she gave her friend a hug. The thought of the pain that those two had put Buffy through! Those were two guys that she wouldn’t mind falling off the face of the earth. Buffy was popular which meant that she hid behind a mask sometimes, but Cordelia knew that inside, her friend had a soft heart and was easily hurt if the person or thing got past the barriers she put up.

“I thought they loved me,” she said in a whisper that was faintly wistful then changed the subject. “Well we’ll all get to see them fifth period.”

“We will?” Cordelia asked slightly surprised with the change in subject, and why they would see the guys.

“Yeah at assembly. You know how Mr. James enjoys getting the new students up in the middle of assembly,” Buffy replied wryly as she remembered four years ago when she’d had to do it.

“Right,” Cordelia said with a nod as she thought about their cranky, embarrassing, practical joking principal. Then added with a smile, “You know I think he just likes to embarrass us!”

“Of course he does! It is his favourite past time and hobby,” Buffy said with a grin. Cordelia laughed too, and said,

“I wonder if anyone told them what to expect?” she asked, then caught sight of her watch,

“Oh no we’ve only got twenty minutes until our next class! We gotta go shower!” and with that, she dragged Buffy off behind her.

“Hey Xander, who’s that?” the brunette asked suddenly from where he was sitting after football practice. Now watching as the cheerleaders packed up after their practice. The blonde looked up and followed the brunette’s gaze and whistled appreciatively.

“Who?” Xander asked as he looked up from throwing the football to Sam and Doyle, and looked at the girls.

“The blonde and brunette over there,” the brunette said pointing towards the bleachers and at the cheerleading squad.

“Oh, the blonde’s Buffy Summers and the brunette’s Cordelia Chase.” The two guys kept their eyes on the two chatting females until they walked off the field.

“So which one are you going to try for?” the blonde asked as he absently flicked his lighter.

“Buffy I think,” he said thoughtfully.

“I don’t know Angel,” Xander said thoughtfully addressing the brunette. “You probably wouldn’t get too far with her.”

“Why not?” Angel inquired softly, glaring at the blonde as he laughed. “Shut up Spike!” Xander shrugged and said thoughtfully,

“Well Buffy hasn’t been dating recently, not after her last two boyfriends. You see Buffy there is one of those popular girls after a meaningful, permanent relationship. Her last two boyfriends told her they loved her then dropped her. For what reason I don’t know.”

“I can do meaningful and permanent,” Angel said softly, which caused Spike to laugh harder. “What? I can!”

“Sure you can mate,” Spike said laughing. “But can you really mean it?”

“Well, it doesn’t really matter if you can or not,” Xander said interrupting the two. “You’d have to get past her defenses and show her you can, and she’s not too trusting at the moment, as you can imagine.”

“Well Angel can always try….” Spike said trailing off with a grin.

“Yeah well, it’s not like you could do any better Spike,” Angel spat.

“I could so,” Spike said loftily. “Well I’ll give you a week and then I’m closing in. In the meantime, I might spend a little time with Cordelia…”

“I’m glad you’re both such good friends already, or I’d think you were enemies.” Xander said quietly. I wonder if I should tell them about the assembly surprise, Xander wondered…

Buffy sat down in a chair with a sigh as she reached the hall. Glad to have a little peace and quiet at least for a little while. Peace until Cordelia caught up with her and started on her favourite topic – guys, not something she was overly thrilled with right now, she thought with a frown.

“Hey Buffy,” said a masculine voice. Buffy immediately snapped out of her musing and looked up into the dark eyes above her, forcing a smile onto her face.

“Hey Parker,” Buffy said breezily through clenched teeth, hating the fact that she was being civil to him after what he did to her. “How was football practice?” uncaring what the reply was.

“It was fine, looking forward to the game on Friday. I’ll see you there cheering us on right?” he asked looking down at her.

“Uh, sure,” she said softly. “Wouldn’t want to let the team down.”

“Cool,” he said with a smile and continued, “The two new guys have joined the team as well, they’re real good players too.” Buffy smiled willing something, anything to interrupt this…whatever this was.

“Hey Buffy!” said the happy feminine voice. Buffy looked up to see her friend Willow and her boyfriend Oz standing there. “Oh, hi Parker,” she added coldly to the quarterback.

“Uh, hi Willow, Oz,” he said uncomfortably, with a nod in Oz’s direction. “I was just telling Buffy how the two new guys, Spike and Angel, joined the football team. Well anyway I better get back to my seat, see you on Friday,” and with that Parker turned on his heel and left to sit with his admirers and cronies.

“Buffy you really shouldn’t let him bug you,” Willow said sternly. “Why don’t you just tell him to get lost?” Willow asked as she pushed her red hair behind her ear and sat down on Buffy’s right, and Oz sat next to Willow.

“You know why, because it doesn’t work! He purposely ignores the coldness, barbs and putdowns that I throw at him.” Buffy said with a sigh, angrily pushing her blonde hair away from her face and slouched down in her chair. “So I’m just stuck playing nice until he finally disappears!”

“It’ll be okay Buffy,” Oz said gently. “He’ll get sick of annoying you sooner or later.”

“You know what you need?” Cordelia said abruptly as she sat down beside Buffy on the left. “A new boyfriend!” she added without waiting for a reply.

“Why do I want to do something like that?” Buffy asked exasperated at her friend’s logic, or lack of logic.

“Because then you can stop thinking about him,” Cordelia said pointing in Parker’s direction. “And start getting on with your life!”

“I can’t just jump to another guy!” Buffy said slightly horrified.

“Why not?” Cordelia asked, arms crossed. “Lots of people do it, there’s nothing wrong with it!” Buffy looked a Willow, pleading for her help against Cordelia’s strange but meaningful logic.

“Well…”Willow started softly, looking at Oz. Oz then kissed her on the cheek and whispered that he’d give them some privacy until assembly started. Willow smiled her thanks then continued,

“You could at least look or show some interest in a guy. I mean, I know how hard it was for you with what happened with Parker. Especially so close to Riley leaving you in the lurch to move to England because he couldn’t cope with your independence, that you didn’t always need him and everything. But you can’t let them ruin everything for you.”

“I know that,” Buffy said as she wrung her hands together. “But it’s difficult for me,” Willow grabbed her hands.

“We’re not asking you to marry someone, we aren’t even asking you to go out with any guy,” Cordelia said practically. “Just look around and be open to it…maybe even one of the new guys.”

However, before Buffy could reply Mr. James got onto the stage, and Oz came back and slipped into his seat just as he started tapping the mike.

“Good afternoon boys and girls,” Mr. James started addressing the assembly. “Notice how I call you boys and girls, because you aren’t worthy being called ladies and gentlemen until you act that way…” he started onto a large, boring speech that they’d already heard a dozen times before.

“Okay,” Buffy whispered over their principals droning voice. “I promise to keep my eyes open to opportunities and I might go out on a date…maybe.” Both her friends smiled and hugged her tight.

“Does he usually drone on like this?” Spike asked abruptly. Sam shrugged and looked at the principal,

“He always goes on about how immature we all are,” he said with a grin and added, “Just as well we only have assembly every three weeks, as it is just about every student knows his speeches of by heart!”

“Yeah, the only good thing we ever do is when we win in sport competitions! As well as the occasional public speaker, artist, writer or debater,”

Xander answered with a laugh. Adding in his best impersonation of the principal, “I’m very proud of your accomplishments Harris. If you keep up the good work and you’ll be a somebody in no time.” The rest of the guys burst out laughing at the perfect impersonation and the eyebrow wiggle that had completely wrecked the perfection of it.

“So did you tell them?” Sam quietly asked Xander.

“Tell us what?” Angel asked, looking up from the principal. Who was now talking about the football season, and how everyone should show up on Friday to support it.

“I don’t know,” Doyle said with a grin. “Do you think we should tell them? I didn’t get any warning when it happened to me.”

“Come on guys!” Spike said looking from one to the other. “Don’t leave us in suspense, what’s going to happen?” They looked at each other in silent communication, then Xander looked up and paid attention to what Mr. James was saying and smiled.

“Don’t worry yourselves, your about to find out,” he said motioning to the principal. “Just don’t forget to smile on stage,” he added with a grin and

Angel and Spike had just enough time for it to sink in before the principals booming voice called them up on stage.

“We’ll get you all for this,” Angel and Spike said to them. They only just had time to say as they got up and walked to the front of the hall.

“Don’t worry mate we’ll kill them all later,” Spike said between gritted teeth as he smiled. “For now just remember show off the charm for the ladies.”

“Thanks a lot,” Angel muttered through his smile.

“Oh my god!” Cordelia screeched as she saw the two guys get on stage.

“What? What?” Buffy asked, shocked out of her own private thoughts by her friend’s screech.

“The new guys are gorgeous!” she said sitting forward in her seat while trying to memorize them.

“The dark-haired one is Angel, he’s from Ireland,” Willow said knowledgeably, then added. “The blonde one is Spike, he’s from England.”

“And how do you know this?” Cordelia asked suspicious. Willow rolled her eyes and said plainly,

“I had English with Angel and Mathematics with Spike.” Cordelia pouted,

“Why didn’t you introduce me?”

“Because you can introduce yourself after assembly,” she said impatiently. “Go back to watching and daydreaming about them and leave me alone!”

She said as she snuggled back into her boyfriend’s arms and continued to exchange a few brief kisses.

“Fine, I will,” Cordelia said, crossing her arms and giving the gorgeous duo back her full attention.

Buffy sat back in her seat and watched the two guys as they walked up to the stage and said a small speech about themselves. It was reasonably obvious to her that they were a little surprised and uncomfortable being up in front of the whole school, but they still managed to give you the impression they weren’t with their smiles and eye contact. Angel and Spike were indeed gorgeous, and she was sure they were going to have the whole female population crawling after them in no time. Though she would not be one of them, she thought with a smile. If they wanted her, they would have to come after her. Not the other way around.

Angel was gorgeous, he had dark hair and eyes, also he had a devastating smile, and his Irish accent was to die for. His body was well built with broad shoulders, and very tall, ideal for football.

Spike was gorgeous too, he was tall with bleached blonde hair and blue eyes – she was almost sure, and he was of slighter build than Angel, though no less muscled and strong. He also had a rakish, sexy smile and a gorgeous British accent.

She sat back after her appraisal of the new guys and wondered if they would even bother with her… after all there were plenty of other girls.

“I guess it wasn’t too bad was it mate?” Spike asked Angel with a grin, as the walked back to their seats.

“I suppose, since we didn’t make a fool of ourselves,” Angel said with a smile, as he raked a hand through his dark hair. Quite happy with the friendship that had sprung up between himself and Spike, not to mention the rivalry. “We got to have a look around at all the ladies anyway.”

“That we did,” Spike said cheerfully. “So did you spot the blond chicky again?” he asked as they sat down in their seats.

“Yeah she was sitting over there,” he said pointing in the direction of her seat, and added with a laugh. “It even looked like she was having fun studying us both.”

“Was she now?” Spike said mischievously as he found her in the crowd.

“Don’t even think about it,” Angel said glaring.

“What?” Spike asked innocently, suppressing a broad smile. “All I was doing was looking.”

“Make sure that’s all your doing,” he said sternly.

“It’s not like you can do anything about it, you haven’t even talked to her yet,” Spike said as he looked at the blonde cheerleader. “However I will stick to my promise, I won’t move in on her for a week. But only a week then all’s fair in love and war.” Angel smiled,

“That’s all I’ll need.”

“So you say…”

“Wow! They’re gorgeous!” Cordelia said with a wistful sigh as the assembly finished and they got up and started towards the exit.

“I think that Cordelia has left the building,” Willow said with a grin.

“I think you might be right,” Buffy said with mock sadness. “Seeing the two new guys at the same time must have fried her brain…”

“I know,” Willow continued, smothering a laugh. “Going all this time with no new guys.”

“And now there are two of them to split her attention between.” Buffy continued mournfully, “It’s so sad.”

“Such a loss,” Willow joined in, smothering a smile.

“So who do you like the most?” Cordelia asked abruptly, as they walked towards their lockers.

“Huh? What do you mean? Willow asked looking up.

“Not you Willow, your taken,” Cordelia said with a grin. “I was asking Buffy which of the new guys she likes the most.”

“How am I supposed to know?” Buffy said with a frown. “I haven’t even met them yet.” Cordelia let out a loud self-suffering sigh,

“You don’t have to know them,” she said impatiently. “Which of them do you like the most from what you saw and heard about them at assembly?”

“Oh…” Buffy said thoughtfully. “I don’t know, I haven’t really thought about it…” Cordelia rolled her eyes,

“Well I suppose that they are both yummy and I haven’t really made up my mind either about which one I prefer… I’ll have to think about it,” she said seriously as they stopped at the lockers.

“Which is special in itself,” Buffy said with a grin. “You usually prefer not to think at all.”

“Hay! I resent that comment!” Cordelia said hand on hips.

“What you going to do about it?” Buffy asked.

“You guys cool it,” Willow said frowning…
