LOVERS CONFRONTATION

Angel sat alone in his mansion staring into the empty fireplace; he knew that he had to leave Buffy. She deserved better than he could give, and moving away would keep him away from temptation and possibly losing his soul again…but he couldn’t forget their kisses, their love and their time together, not to mention her tears as she told him that all she needed was him. It broke his heart and ripped at his soul to think of her crying and upset, over him. After all, all he wanted to do was love and cherish her and he couldn’t.

Angel ran a tired hand through his spiky dark hair and stood up from the chair, deciding that he needed to go for a walk and clear his head. He grabbed his jacket and walked out into the pouring rain.

“Spike you are totally and utterly incorrigible!” Buffy said loudly as they walked out of the cinema.

“Huh?” he asked innocently, raising an eyebrow.

“What do you mean huh?” she asked. “You know exactly what I’m going on about, so don’t act all innocent.”

“It’s nothing to get your nickers in a knot over, pet,” he said calmly.

“Nothing?! Excuse me if I don’t see you eating all MY popcorn, then being too noisy, then almost being thrown out of the cinema only to tell the guy to go away or you’ll eat him!!! As being NOTHING!”

“Aw…poor baby,” he said walking closer to her and trying to take her into his arms.

“Don’t you aw baby me! You are in big trouble mister!” she said taking a step backwards and crossing her arms

“Can’t I be in trouble and hug you at the same time?” he asked mournfully.

“NO!” she said trying desperately to hold onto her anger.

“One I bought the popcorn and I had to eat something…if I couldn’t eat you or that other guy,” he said wickedly. “Secondly I wouldn’t have really eaten him, I was only trying to scare him. And three it’s not like the movie was that good anyway I was trying to liven it up,” Spike said sadly while pouting.

“But that’s not the point!” she said.

“Well what is the point?” he asked softly while he gathered her into his arms again, though this time she didn’t pull away.

“Oh, it doesn’t matter, its not like you’d learn anything anyway.” She said sadly, and then started pulling him to the ice cream store. “Come on Spike you can buy me an ice cream to apologise,” she said laughing.

“You know Slayer you aren’t very good with saving money you know,” he said looking at her pleadingly. “Especially mine.”

“Those are the breaks,” she said as she pulled him along.

Buffy walked over to the booth as Spike ordered their ice cream. He really wasn’t that bad when it came down to it. Other than the fact he was really hot, he really was gentle and sweet sometimes, and seemed to care about her even if her wouldn’t admit it and he was fun to be around. It also didn’t hurt that for some reason her mother really seemed to like Spike, they spent hours talking over cocoa. Her mother had never liked Angel…not that it helped that one of the first times they met he was Angelus and he’d told her mother that he’d slept with her…not something a mother forgets or forgives easily, she mused to herself.

“Love?” Spike said waving a hand in front of her face and interrupting her train of thought.

“Hm…?” she murmured, looking up at him.

“I got your ice cream,” he said with a grin, putting it in front of her. Buffy looked down and smiled; he always seemed to know what she felt like before she had to tell him.

“Thanks,” she said smiling at him.

The blonde couple were completely oblivious of the dark shadow that watched them that night as they talked and kissed, or the stricken expression on the dark haired man’s face as he watched his love and his childe interact together. The man turned and walked away saddened but not yet beaten.

Spike drove Buffy home and walked her to the door, after a very eventful night of ice cream, dancing and a movie. They kissed sweetly at the door before Spike gently untangled himself. “Do you want to come in?” Buffy asked unsure.

“Not tonight pet,” he said with a grin. “I’ll see you tomorrow, ok?”

“Ok, see you later Spike,” she said as she walked inside, wondering why the hell she couldn’t fall in love with someone normal for a change… someone that wasn’t a vampire, for example.

Spike sat in the car for a minute as he watched the light go on in her room and thought about the past week and a bit. It had been wonderful; Buffy was wonderful, he thought with a sigh. He had not thought of Dru the whole time he’d been here with the Slayer, maybe he was finally over his dark princess, and ready to start again. It wasn’t like Dru wanted him, only her “Daddy” and other demons…he was through with Dru he vowed to himself. And with that he started his car and started towards his house.

Angel shook his head as he looked up at the beautifully built two story honey coloured stone house, it was funny he’d never thought of his childe as ever owning something like this, something so…permanent. He didn’t know why it should surprise him so much; he hadn’t seen Spike for at least fifty years other than occasional glances, and the occasional battle.

Angel walked up to the wooden door and slipped inside. He looked around and was surprised to find that the house was decorated quite tastefully in blacks and golds and the occasional splash of red. He wondered if Spike had decorated it himself…

Angel shook his head and walked to the kitchen. He was quite astonished when he walked in to find a pure white cat looking up at him, curiously showing in its clear blue eyes, and a black cat which looked up at him with lazy gold eyes then came over to rub against his legs.

He searched the remainder of the house and found a few more surprises; the first was that Spike was a pretty good artist from the pictures that framed the walls here and there. The other was what the pictures were of, or whom they were of. There were landscapes, still life’s of long ago, but also pictures of Spike and Dru, Darla and Himself…not to mention self-portraits and a group picture. But there were also pictures of Buffy here and there.

Angel walked back into the lounge room and sat down on one of the armchairs to ponder his thoughts and wait for his childe to return.

Spike drove up to his new house in his car and put it in the garage. He still wasn’t sure why he’d bought the house, it really was a beautiful house but he’d never been very domestic or one to put down roots before… deep down though he knew it was all to do with a certain blonde Slayer that he was starting to care deeply for.

He was so involved in his own thoughts that he didn’t notice that his senses were telling him to watch out, that someone was in his house. So he walked into the house completely unaware until he picked up a familiar scent and he looked up into the dark eyes of his Sire.

“Bloody hell,” he said under his breath then grinned. “Hey there Peaches, didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Spike,” Angel said looking at him with dark, unreadable eyes, eyes that had the uncanny effect of making him feel like a child again, a child that had been caught doing something wrong. Spike shook himself mentally, he wasn’t a child anymore and he didn’t have to answer to anyone, especially his ever-soulful Sire.

It angered him that his Sire could still bring out the feelings of betrayal, loneliness and abandonment that he had felt when Angel had left him and the others when he had gotten his soul back. Spike shoved his hands into his pockets and pulled out his cigarettes and lighter as he waited for Angel to speak, not because he needed a smoke but because he wanted to do something with his hands so that he wouldn’t fidget… Angel had always seemed to notice his fidgeting. “So what brings you to Sunnydale?” Angel asked finally, after what seemed like forever.

“You know me,” Spike said flippantly. “I always go where the action is and Sunnydale sounded like a good enough place as any. Also the fact that I was told never to come back again gave it some added attraction.”

“Nothing to do with the Slayer or with me leaving?” Angel asked watching his childe carefully.

“Mm…” Spike said thoughtfully. “Can’t say I wasn’t glad to find out you were leaving, and I did think about trying to kill her a couple of times.”

“And?” Angel asked suspiciously.

“What do you mean and she’s still alive ain’t she?” Spike said loudly, glaring at Angel.

“You know what I mean Spike,” Angel said softly. “I’m talking about why you haven’t tried to kill the Slayer…Buffy yet.”

“And that is your business, why?” he asked sarcastically as he stubbed out his cigarette.

“It’s my business because I love her,” Angel said in a dangerous tone. “And because I saw you both being very chummy earlier on tonight and I want to know why!”

“Oh so you’ve resorted to spying now have you,” Spike sneered.

“Just answer the question Spike,” Angel said as he stood up out of the chair and walked over to his Childe.

“Answer the question? Why the hell should I? What the hell have you ever done for me?” Spike said turning away from his Sire, only to find himself sprawled on the floor.

“Why make this harder than you have to Spike?” Angel said circling his Childe’s fallen form, “All you have to do is answer the question.”

“Why do I make it harder?” he asked as he sprang to his feet. “Because I hate you!” And with that he kicked Angel’s legs out from under him, Angel got back up and the two vampires circled each other.

“Why Spike? Why do you hate me?” Angel asked softly as he paused and looked at his childe.

“Because of what you did to me!” Spike yelled and lunged at Angel, only to miss as Angel sidestepped the attack.

“And what was that Spike?” Angel asked curiously.

“You fucking prick, you made me,” Spike said as he threw a punch only to find himself on his back, and Angel pinning him down. Spike then glared at Angel and whispered, “And then you bloody left me, abandoned me, as if I meant nothing.” Angel looked down at his Childe’s face and was astonished to see pain, loneliness and rejection, playing on his face, until Spike replaced it with the emotionless mask once more.

“Spike…” Angel started as he touched Spike’s face. Spike flinched away from his touch, and Angel felt an infinite sadness in his unbeating heart for what he’d done to Spike.

He had only left them for their own good, because he was no longer Angelus and full of painful remorse, they wouldn’t have understood and things couldn’t have been the same. Also they probably would have tried to kill him…but he had failed to think about Spike. Spike had looked up to him, the father he’d never had, even though as a father Angelus was harsh and had punished him frequently.

He had always known that there was something special and unique about Spike, something Angelus had never liked and tried to break out of him. But Spike had just learned to cover it up, to wear a mask and cover his feelings with sarcasm and wit. Now that he really thought about it Spike had always kept a part of himself when he was changed, a human part. Like how unconditionally he had loved and cared for Dru, even without his soul Spike was more human than some humans. Sure Spike liked mayhem and killing, but he also had a softer more human side as well. “Spike I’m…I’m sorry,” Angel said softly.

“You want to know why I haven’t killed her?” Spike asked at he threw his Sire off him and got up. “Because I like her. She’s gorgeous and has a spunk and personality that I just can’t stand to kill. And she reminds me a bit of myself…” he said trailing off as he walked to the window.

“Buffy…?” Angel questioned, not sure what he was asking exactly.

“You want to know how we got to be all pally with each other?” he asked, finally turning around to look at Angel. Angel nodded and Spike pulled out his cigarettes again and lit one.

“It was all because of you,” Spike said softly. “I was quite ready to go back to trying to kill her, even though I thought she was beautiful. That is until I found her all by herself in the cemetery, doing quite a good job of getting herself drunk because of you,” he told Angel pointedly. Angel winced and looked at the ground; upset about what he had done to the girl he loved. “So anyway,” Spike continued. “I couldn’t leave her like that or kill her so I looked after her and took her home. After that we became friends and started spending more time together.”

Angel sighed softly and ran a hand through his spiked hair, as he walked over to the window. He wished that he could have spared those he loved from all the pain that he had caused them, but what he’d done he had done for them. He also wished that he could be the man that Buffy needed, but maybe… he thought looking up at his childe. “You love her,” Angel said softly. Spike looked up at Angel in shock,

“No I don’t!” Spike said gruffly, Angel smiled and Spike growled.

“You’ll figure it out some day…William,” Angel said gently. “I’m sorry I abandoned you, I just thought it was for the best at the time…Just make sure you look after her, or else.” And with that Angel ducked out the window and was gone, leaving a very stunned blonde vampire in his wake.

The end.
