DRINKING MEMORIES AWAY

“How dare that little Slayer get herself drunk!” Spike muttered to himself. “She’s too young and she could get killed out here…not that I care,” he told himself and walked over to where she was sitting on a headstone swinging her legs, singing some riddle with a bottle in her hand. While trying not to notice how delicious she looked in her white leather pants, aquamarine tank top and white sandals, not to mention her flushed face, bright green eyes and pouty red lips.

“Hey there Slayer,” he said with a cocky grin as he walked up to her, using the old charm to override his unbearable concern.

“Go ‘way Spike,” she said glaring at him over her bottle. “Can’t you see I’m tryin’ to get dwunk here?”

“Yeah I can see,” he drawled.

“Well, why don’t ya go the hell away from me and let me get dwunk?” she asked.

“Where’s the fun in that?” he asked with a grin.

“A girl can’t even get any bloody peace and quiet when she’s trying to get dwunk…especially from bloody vampires,” she said as she took another gulp.

“What are you getting yourself drunk for Slayer, if you don’t mind me asking,” he said with another grin.

“Well, I mind,” she said sulkily taking another gulp and then looking down at her bottle that was almost empty, thinking that she needed another. The pain and memories hadn’t dulled or gone away yet.

“Well you’re going to have to tell me love,” he said quietly.

“I don’ have to tell you nothin’ Spike,” she said loudly glaring at the vampire.

“Oh yes you do love, ‘cause I’m not letting you go till you do,” he said with a wolfish smile that Buffy completely missed because she was staring up at the stars as she swung her legs.

“Stupid, damn bloody vampires…all of ‘em think they know what’s bloody best for me and telling me what to do,” she muttered to herself as she took another swig. “And I’m the damn Slayer, they should be tremblin’ at the sight a me, not tellin’ me how to live my life and what to do!”

“Luv…” Spike started.

“I’m not your love, Spike,” Buffy said sharply. “And I don’ really wanna talk right now. I just wanna drink myself into oblivion, ok’y?”

“No it’s not okay, love. I want to know what’s so bloody wrong that you’re drinking yourself into a stupor like this!”

“Well since I’m not gunna tell ya, we can always fight,” she said as she got a stake out of her sleeve and lunged at him.

“Bloody hell Slayer,” he cursed as he sidestepped her and she swayed slightly as she turned on him again. “What’s gotten into you?”

“Oh so its okay for Spikey the bad ol’ vampire to get himself dwunk all the time but not me, huh?” she asked as she went for him again and he grabbed her tightly around the wrists and shook her slightly, taking the stake away from her and tucking it into his pocket.

“Buffy come on you can tell me,” he said softly.

“I don’t wanna,” she said again, then looked at her almost empty bottle and decided she needed to have another drink. Maybe Spike would go away too if she drank enough. She abruptly hit him in the chest so he let go and she downed the remaining alcohol from the bottle and twirled it around. “All gone,” she said mournfully.

“Come on luv if you tell me, I’ll um… buy you another bottle,” he said holding an unneeded breath as she looked at him suspiciously. Trying not to think about why he wanted to know what was wrong with his…no THE Slayer.

“Okie dokie Spikey,” she said after a pause. “But I wan’ the alcohol now and then I tell you,” she said solemnly looking up at him with slightly alcohol clouded green eyes.

“Okay honey, but we’re going to have to go for a small walk to get the alcohol, okay?” he said quietly, took her arm and started walking out of the cemetery and towards Willy’s. Trying not to think about what all the vampires and demons would think when he walked in with the Slayer, not that he even knew why he cared about the Slayer.

“Okay spikey, you won’t try anythin’ will you?” she asked with a slight pout. “You’re still evil but I’m gonna trust you this time, ok’y. But only cause I need some more alcohol because I can still feel and remember an I don’ wanna.”

“I promise I’ll be good honey,” he said with a grin and kept walking.

“‘Cause you know Angel wouldn’t like it if you hurt me…” her voice trailed off and he was going to make some crack about that joke of a Sire of his when he saw Buffy’s lip quiver and crystal tears start to form in her beautiful green eyes.

“I know luv, which is why I’m going to look after you,” he said consolingly to the Slayer. “Look love, we’re here.”

“Oh good, now I get my alcohol, Spikey?” she asked looking up at him with her big green eyes.

“That you do Slayer, now stay here,” he told her as he sat her down at a booth and walked over to the bar. “A bottle of…whatever this stuff is,” he said looking at the bottle the slayer had been holding, and then walked back to Buffy.

“Here you go luv,” he said as he handed her the bottle. She took a gulp and almost seemed to purr at the taste and he almost felt envious of the bottle. “So luv…what are you trying to forget?” he asked. She looked at him suspiciously for a moment and took another swig.

“I don’ wanna remember Angel…” she said as she took another gulp and crystal tears floated once more in the green depths.

“Why baby?” he said trying to be comforting as he patted her on the shoulder awkwardly, not knowing what else to do. He wasn’t used to consoling people…he was supposed to be the Big Bad.

“‘Cause he recons he loves me but he don’t,” she said with a sniffle.

“How do you know?” he asked while he lit a cigarette, and she gave him a look telling him he was stupid.

“‘Cause he’s gonna leave me, recons he knows what’s best for me, but he don’t,” she said looking pleadingly into his eyes. “I‘m the Slayer aint I Spikey? I dangerous and vampires are scared a me, right?”

“Yeah that’s right, pet,” he said.

“I’m not ugly or unlovable or anythin’, am I Spike?” she asked looking at him imploringly and took another gulp.

“Of course not baby,” he told her and wrapped his arm around her. Cursing Angelus and all the others that had hurt the Slayer so bad that she thought there was something wrong with her.

“So that’s the reason I drinkin’ Spike, cause I don’ wanna remember Angel, him loving me and leaving me…like everyone else.” She said slowly and softly, taking another gulp and looking up in surprise that the bottle was almost empty again. “So I drinkin’ myself into oblivion so I don’ feel no more or hurt no more,” and with that she finished her second bottle and looked pleadingly at the blonde vampire.

“Bloody hell,” he swore. “I’ll be back in a min love,” he told her and walked back to the bar. Only to come back to find her smoking one of his cigarettes, “Since when do you smoke, pet?” he asked.

“Since when do you care?” she said blowing the smoke into his face, he glared at her expecting an answer. “Since Angel said he was goin’. Damn stupid Slayer metabolism, I cant even get dwunk right,” she said sulkily drawing in another puff with a slight cough, and holding her hand out for her bottle. He handed the bottle over to her grudgingly and she took a gulp.

“You shouldn’t get so upset about it baby, you’re a beautiful…ah young lady and he’s not worthy of you. You belong in the light and with someone real special, like you. ” He said while she snuggled back against him, still drinking from her bottle. He picked up the cigarette she’d discarded and took a draw, wondering what the hell he was doing.

“That’s what he said…” she said softly her voice distant, as she stared at the wall looking at something no one else could see. Spike felt a strong urge to go bash his Sire’s head in for upsetting Buffy so much that she had to find the cure in the bottom of a bottle…or three to be exact as he saw that her current bottle was already half empty. But he still didn’t know why he was so upset or worried about one little Slayer, his enemy…or you just wont admit it, a niggly voice in his head told him.

“Looky at what I found,” a booming voice announced from above them and Spike winced. It was Chad, not the smartest tool in the shed by far and not so dangerous by himself but the redheaded vampire had a nice big group of followers, which made up for it. “I found William with some blonde,” and with a sniff he growled out the word Human.

“Hey there Chad, thought you’d gone to greener pastures,” Spike said maliciously, and stood up trying not to disturb the now sleeping Slayer.

“Well I’d say you’ve changed tastes,” he said with a look at Buffy and Spike growled possessively without realising it. Chad continued with a grin, “it looks like William here has changed to fraternising with the food. Shame on you.”

“Spike?” Buffy asked blinking, and looked up to see him surrounded by vampires. Mm… this wasn’t good, I wonder if I can stand and fight? She wondered to herself, fighting the insane need to giggle. “Spike?” she asked again as she tried to get another stake out of her pocket with fingers that didn’t seem to work properly.

“What?” he asked, looking down at her and realised that she was thinking about fighting. “Luv…” he started, then cursed when she stood up, swaying slightly from the almost three bottles of the vodka stuff she’d downed in the last hour or so. True she was a Slayer so she hadn’t passed out and it hadn’t seemed to have affected her too badly but he still doubted she could fight.

“Slayer…” he heard Chad hiss as he saw the blonde girls stance and stake. “Spike, seriously the Slayer?” he asked with a glance.

“Like it’s any of your damn business,” he said looking at Chad, then looked back at the Slayer and said, “Slayer your drunk, sit back down.”

“You can’t tell me what to do…” she started, trying to ignore the realisation that Spike was…kinda cute. He pushed her back down onto the seat before she could fall down, rolling his eyes at her curses. He picked up the stake, and planted a kiss on her lips and whispered, “Be good luv.”

“So are we going to do this the easy way or the hard way?” he asked them with a grin as he stood up again. They ran at him and he changed to his game face and smiled, “Oh this will be fun…the hard way.”

Ten minutes later Spike walked out of the bar no real worse for ware, carrying a little blonde Slayer in his arms. While trying to ignore the way she was snuggled into his chest, the vanilla smell of her body and hair, and the way her warm breath felt as it feathered his cheek as she slept peacefully.

“Damn it,” he muttered to himself. “I’m no de-fanged poof,” he continued softly to himself, until he once again looked down and saw the beautiful thing lying in his arms and he smiled, realising that he felt like purring. “I’m no pussy cat either and I don’t purr,” he told himself sternly. Spike was so enthralled with the girl in his arms and the discussion he was having with himself over her, that he almost walked straight past the Slayer’s house. As it was he had to turn around and walk back a bit, after he decided to just use her window rather than taking her all through the house and risking possible discovery an having to explain himself.

He held on to his Slayer tightly, but comfortably and started up the tree, trying to make his movements flowing so that they didn’t wake her. When he reached the window he opened it and went to go through. Then swore as his head hit a wall, remembering that he didn’t have an invitation into the house. “Luv can I come in?” he whispered to the Slayer in his arms, she murmured something unintelligible and snuggled her head under his chin and he smiled. “Love can I come in?” he asked again, and she sighed under his chin, murmuring out the words, “Mm…Spike.”

He moved his arm to the window and through the space, thinking the murmur must have been an adequate invitation into the house, so he stepped through the window and into the room. He walked over to the bed, turned on the lamp and placed the slayer onto her bed, wondering what he was supposed to do now.

He looked down at the tight leather pants and clingy top the slayer was wearing, and decided that they wouldn’t be comfortable to sleep in so he looked around for a nightdress and after finding nothing, finally went to the draws and found one.

He unbuttoned her pants and pulled them down, trying not to look at the smooth long legs, then picked the slayer up again and leant her against him as he pulled the top over her head, while keeping his eyes above her neck and away from her soft curves. He then pulled the nightdress over her head and down her body, sighing in relief when she was clothed again. He picked her up and put her under the sheet and was about to get up when something grabbed his hand, he looked down in shock at the hand that had grabbed his and the sleepy green eyes that stared at him.

“Spike,” she whispered sleepily looking into his blue eyes and wondering why she never noticed how blue they were before.

“Yeah luv?” he replied cautiously.

“Thanks,” she said with a smile that made his unbeating heart flutter.

“No worries love,” he said with a grin. But before he even realised it Buffy had grabbed his wrists and pulled him down onto the bed and pressed a soft kiss against his lips while running a hand through his bleached blonde hair. Then snuggling back down into his arms with a smile she whispered, “That was nice, stay with me Spike.”

He lightly touched his lips and looked down at the blonde in his arms and smiled, she didn’t have to ask him twice. But he stood up, gently untangling her from him. So he could go close the blinds, he didn’t relish the idea of being dust in the morning, then walked back to the bed and took her in his arms again, only to have her snuggle closer.

The blonde vampire was happy as he lay there holding the slayer. His last thoughts being that the Slayer was going to have a massive headache in the morning…and would he wake up to a stake in his face? He was so happy that he didn’t even notice the rumbling purr that was coming from him, as he fell asleep.

The slayer opened her green eyes and stared at the vampire holding her so gently, and smiled at the purr coming from him, as she fell asleep in his arms once more. Not thinking about the morning.

The End.
