Kennedy walked up Lexington Avenue towards slayer central at 57th St. As she approached the corner where the slayers lived her stomach began to churn. Was she nervous? She hadn’t been out on the job for quite some time. The last year had been hard. She had spent most of it by Willow’s side, nursing her through long bouts of nightmares.

She had been looking forward to this for weeks. Not only was she going to be seeing some action, but once Vi got her settled she was going to be commander and chief of her little army. Okay, not quite an army, but it was close enough! She couldn’t wait to get her hands dirty, she just hoped she still had the stuff. Who was she kidding; of course she still had the stuff!

Her confidence building back up, Kennedy pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket. On it was written, Suite 45F. She rang the buzzer.

“Yes,” came a deep voice with a heavy German accent. “Who goes there?”

“Um, it’s Kennedy.”

“What is the nature of your visit?” came the voice, authoritatively.

“Uh, well, I was hoping, I was going to meet some people and I could possibly kill something?” Kennedy answered uncertainly. Did she have the wrong apartment?

“Password!”

“What?” Kennedy said. This was too much; whoever was on the other side of that call box was going to get it when she got up there! This was the last thing she needed. She was pissed off and someone was going to get a beating! She hoped it was a lucky vampire or maybe the boy on the intercom.

“Get out of the way,” she heard a female voice say. “Kenn?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s Vi, come on up!” She heard the excited voice of her friend on the other side of the intercom.

Kennedy walked through the door and took the elevator to the 45th floor. She stepped out and was greeted by one very excited slayer and a group of apprehensive students standing behind her.

“Kenn!” Vi exclaimed excitedly. “How have you been? Where have you been? What have you been doing? I am just brimming with questions!” She flung her arms around her fellow slayer.

“I can tell,” Kennedy said, with a small chuckle hugging her back.

“Wow, I just bombarded you, didn’t I? Sorry, I was just so excited,” Vi said, pulling away. “Come on inside and I will introduce you to the troops.”

Leading the way, Vi walked into Slayer Central, New York. It was a large apartment with two stories. Bedrooms upstairs and the essentials downstairs. There were books and clutter everywhere.

“Sorry about the mess, we have been super busy. New York is a crazy place,” Vi said apologetically looking around at the pigsty in front of her.

“It’s no big,” Kennedy said, walking in and taking a look around. “Nice place.”

“It’s home, well at least for now,” Vi said. “Soon, I will be leaving and all this will be yours,” she said in a dramatic tone gesturing to her surroundings and the group of people behind her. Kennedy’s reputation had proceeded her and they were slightly frightened of the petite brown haired girl in front of them.

“So, introductions,” Vi began. “This is Susie.” A very short girl with curly brown hair that frizzed to the extent of making her head look twice the size it actually was stepped forward and extended her hand.

“Pleased to meet you,” she said timidly. Kennedy took it and gave it a good shake, smiling slightly at the painstakingly shy girl.

“She’s a slayer,” Vi added. “Our other slayer at the moment is Charlotte. We are supposed to have four but there just aren’t enough graduates yet to fill all the posts. We are on the waiting list for a couple more, but they haven’t arrived as of yet. Has anyone seen Charlotte? CHARLOTTE!” Vi screamed.

A slender, tall, blonde haired woman walked out of one of the bedrooms upstairs. Her eyes were ocean blue and she walked as if floating down the stairs. She was so graceful, but she radiated strength. Kennedy looked up at her, Wow, she thought. That’s a pretty one.

“Sorry,” Charlotte said in her British accent. “I was napping. I must not have heard the door.” She moved over to stand beside Susie. They were an odd pair, Kennedy thought, with Charlotte being about a foot and half taller then Susie. Charlotte smiled at Kennedy. “You must be Kennedy.”

“Um, well yes, I am,” Kennedy said, a lit embarrassed by her reaction.

“Charlotte, you knew when Kennedy was coming. You need to be on time. We have talked about this,” Vi said in an unusually authoritative tone. Charlotte looked at the ground and nodded.

Vi has really grown up since I’ve seen her last. They really respect her. Kennedy thought.

“That is Frederick in the back there. He’s our resident watcher,” Vi continued. “We are expecting a second one as well, but until then we’re stuck with this one.”

“Hey,” he said defensively in his German accent.

“So you were the one on the intercom,” Kennedy said thoughtfully. “We are going to have to talk about that,” she added.

Frederick looked slightly nervous.

“Finally, this is Ilya. He’s our witch,” Vi finished.

“Wizard.” He corrected his with a Russian accent. He glared at Vi with his clear brown eyes. His hair was dark brown, almost black and his skin and features were dark. He carried with him an air of awkward mystery. If he abandoned his awkward stance he would probably be quiet attractive.

“Right, sorry,” she apologized. “Well that’s the team,” she said, turning to Kennedy.

“Yes,” Kennedy said. “Hello,” she began, feeling the butterflies creep back into her stomach. “I’m glad to be meeting you all and can’t wait to see everyone in action.” See everyone in action, yeah that was real authoritative and leadery. They are really going to respect you now, she thought.

“Okay, gang. It’s almost dark and we need to get to the park,” Vi instructed. “Everyone suit up. Ilya, I want you to try that new holy water spell you have been working on. Fredrick, you’re staying here tonight. I don’t want another foul up like last time!” Frederick looking embarrassed, suddenly found something very interesting to stare at on his shoe.

Everyone scurried around, picking up the various items they needed before they headed out.

“So why can’t Frederick go?” Kennedy asked Vi as they gathered equipment.

“Oh, he only almost got himself killed by a Touruk Demon last night. It wasn’t pretty. Now he has to stay home and research why it was out at all. As you know, they are super rare.”

Kennedy didn’t know, but she nodded like she did. She was never one for studying, just show her how to kill it and she was good to go. She might have to brush up on her demonology if she wanted to keep up with this group.

After about fifteen minutes the group was ready to go, leaving behind one very dejected Frederick. They began their walk to the park. Vi and Kennedy led the group walking a ways ahead to give them some catch up time.

“So how’s Willow?” Vi asked. “You guys still the happy couple?”

This question made Kennedy’s stomach lurch, remembering how she had left early that night. She didn’t know quite how to answer the question. They were still the happy couple, at least she thought they were. Things were hard, but sometimes you just had to wait it out, right? It was bound to get better, it had to! Willow was the love of her life and she was going to make it work if it killed her.

“Good, everything’s good,” Kennedy lied.

“That’s good. So she is feeling better then?” Vi said quietly, glancing behind her to make sure the others were far enough away that they couldn’t hear.

“Yeah, she is doing just great!” Kennedy lied again. Only the close group had known about Willow’s attacks. The general school public just thought she was off doing witch-type things. There was no need for them to know their creator was so sick.

“So, Susie is a slayer, huh?” Kennedy asked skeptically. “She is awfully tiny and, well, shy and kind of delicate for battle.”

“She appears that way, but wait till you see her fight. You will be amazed!” Vi said proudly.

By this point they had reached the edge of the park.

“Okay, now let’s move to where we found the Touruk Demon last night and see what we can find.”

The group entered the park and only got about five feet before they reached trouble.

“Hasn’t anyone ever told you the park is dangerous at night,” one very large male vampire said from behind the group. “Very, very dangerous,” he added, as five more vampires appeared from all sides.

“Geez, don’t you guys ever give up?” Charlotte said, eyeing a vampire coming up on her left. She lunged at it and dusted it quickly before it even saw the stake.

With that the other vampires pounced on the group. All slayers went into full attack mode. Susie spun and kicked. Vi had been right, she was a sight to see. She alone dusted three of the six vamps.

This is what Kennedy had been waiting for. The fight. She had missed it. When the vampire in front of took its first step, she sprung on him and began to fight. Unfortunately, the vampire was new and was dusted in about half a second. “Man!” Kennedy said. “That was very unsatisfying. You could have held out a little longer, let me get in one good punch or something!”

“They always put the newbies on the outside of the park. It’s like some sort of pecking order they have,” Charlotte said, coming up behind Kennedy. “So, is it true you’re dating Willow?”

“Yes,” Kennedy said, fairly defensively. “Why do you want to know?”

“Oh, it’s not ‘cause of the whole you dating her thing. I mean ‘cause you‘re both girls. I mean that’s fine with me, I mean it’s fine in general. Dating girls is fine. Good actually, I mean great, girls dating girls,” Charlotte too a breath to stop her babbling. “It’s, well, it’s just I have heard so much about her. I’ve always wanted to meet her, seeing as I owe my slayer existence to her.”

Before Kennedy could answer, she saw that the leader of this gang had yet to be dusted. He was running through the underbrush and into the park. “We missed one,” she said, pointing in the direction of the retreating vampire.

“Ilya, now! Use the spell!” Vi commanded, running after the vamp.

Ilya chanted as a large ball of water began to form in front of him. The ball swelled to the size of a small beach ball and he flung it in the direction of the lead vamp, hitting him squarely in the back. The vamp fell to the ground, writhing in pain, as his back steamed and blistered. Vi caught up to him and plunged a stake into his heart. He burst into dust.

Kennedy shook her head slightly and raised an eyebrow. “Neat,” she said, impressed.
