Name: Gnarl

Episode 7.03 "Same Time, Same Place"

Gnarl was a parasite-demon with long fingernails that secreted a poison, which it used to paralyse his victims.

The paralysis is permanent, but it will wear off when the demon is killed. While the victim can't move his or her own arms, other people can "pose" the paralyzed person. (Note: In the episode, Anya was called in to watch over Dawn to make sure she didn't "vomit" while paralyzed. Anya had great fun moving Dawn's limbs around and called her "poseable".)

Gnarl would slowly cut off strips of its victim’s skin and eat it while they are still alive. Gnarl also drank its victim’s blood by lapping up what is spilled (unlike a vampire). The Gnarl demon prefers to taunt its victims verbally before it attacks. A Gnarl's only weak spot are the eyes. The demon has also been called the "Hannibal Lecter" of demons by some circles.

Buffy rescued an "invisible" Willow at the end of "Same Time, Same Place" by gouging out the Gnarl demon's eyes with her thumbs..

Trivia:
The Gnarl costume was used once more in season seven. It was painted black and used in the scene where the demon is hovering over Joyce's body in "Conversations with Dead People".
