Part One

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The moon shone down on the town of Sunnydale, C.A. Shadows danced about in the moonlight. Leaves blew aimlessly in the wind. Something was coming. Something powerful. Something that no one could control, no one could stop.

Buffy Summers walked into the library of Sunnydale High School. The pretty blonde brushed her hair behind her ears. Her crystal blue eyes searched the library. " Giles," the young vampire slayer called. Giles, the librarian and faithful watcher of Buffy, was nowhere to be found. He was usually here earlier than anyone. " Where could he be," she thought to herself.

Buffy shruged and turned to leave. Just then Xander Harris made his way into the library. Xander was buffy's friend and loyal " Slayerette." Xander had had a crush on Buffy since she had moved here from L.A. after her little...accident. Xander was cute, funny, very nice, but Buffy wasn't interested in him the way he was with her.She just wanted to be friends and he didn't.

"Hey, what's up," Buffy asked him casually. Then she looked at him. Something was differnet. He wasn't wearing his usual t-shirt and jeans attire. He was dressed in a pair of kakis, a blue button down shirt, a black leather jacket. And he looked good. The clothes were definetly doing something for him. But his clothing wasn't the only thing differnet. There was something else, but Buffy couldn't place it.

Xander flashed her a brillant smile, " Not much is up. So how are you today?"

Buffy gave him a strange look, " I'm-I'm fine. I guess. I'm way underprepared for the Trig test today. I just can't seem to concentrate on it. I'm really worn out for some reason. But besides that I'm fine. Hey what's up with the clothes? Got a hot date or something?"

Xander looked at her with a grin on his face. " Not yet, " he said sauvely.

Buffy smiled, " What is up with you?"

"Nothing. I'm just trying to think of a good place to take you on our date tonight."

Buffy looked at him with her eyebrows raised. He MUST be kidding she thought. " We have a date? When were you going to inform me of this?"

He took her hand and said, " I just did."

Xander moved closer. Leaned forward. Buffy backed away apprehensively.

"Xander...."

His dark eyes locked with hers. " Would you accompany me to the Bronze tonight? Please?"

What the hell is going on here Buffy thought. This was not the usual babbling, sarcastic Xander.

As he stared into her eyes, Buffy lost her train of thought. All she could do was say yes to his invitation.

"Great. I'll pick you up at seven thirty. Until then." Then Xander leaned forward, kissed her hand, and left.

Buffy watched him leave still kind of dazed. A few seconds later she came out of it. " What just happened here," she said out loud. Why had she said yes to a date with Xander? She didn't like him that way. Or did she? Buffy didn't know what was going on but she was going to find out.

Samantha Calendar sat at her desk in the computer lab. She had a free and had decided to use the time to grade some of her students papers. The teacher sat deep in thought, twisting a strand of her dark hair around her finger. Just then he heard a knock on her door.

"Come in, " she said without looking up from the papers.

She expected it was probably a student, but when she looked up she was surprised to find that it was Rupert Giles, the librarian. Except she couldn't quite be sure it was him. The british man ,who usually dressed in tweed and was extremely conservative, was wearing a biker jacket; a pair of jeans; and most shocking of all an earing.

Calendar could barely control her laughter as the middle aged man literally struted his way over to her desk.

He smiled at her and said, " Hey Babe. What's happening?"

That's when Calendar lost it. She eruppted into laughter.

" Did I miss something? No one told me it was Halloween," she said between giggles.

After a few moments she regained her composure.

Giles had some silly grin on his face, " So, what do you say about you and me going for a ride on my Harley tonight. And then afterwards....well, who knows? Who cares?"

Calendar started to laugh again, but stopped herself when she realized that he was serious. " Okay Rupert. What's going on? Last time I checked you didn't know what a Harley was, let alone own one."

He smiled, " Thing change, people change. So what ya say we play hooky?"

Calendar looked at him confused, " Uh, Rupert. We'll have to finish this conversation sometime later, okay?"

Giles shrugged and said, " Later Babe." Then he left.

Calendar sat shocked, " Babe? I didn't know the word was in his vocabulary."

Buffy was walking to her class when she saw a flash of red hair. Her friend Willow Rosenburg stood down the hall with her back to Buffy.

Buffy made her way down the hall to where Willow was. Willow wasn't alone. There were two guys standing with her. Craig and Sean. They were two jocks who were majorally popular. What was the noramlly shy Willow doing talking to them?

"Hey Will," Buffy said causing Willow to turn around, " Xander's been acting kinda-"

She stopped in mid sentence when she saw her friend. She was wearing a goldish dress and high heals. Her hair was curled slightly and she was wearing make-up.She looked gorgeous. What was going on here? This was not Willow wear. She usually dressed, well..... nothing like this.

The smile that had been on Willow's face when she was talking to the boys , faded when she saw Buffy.

"Oh. Hi Buffy, " Willow said not sounding too thrilled.

"Will what's up with you? Your clothes-"

"Excuse me? Are you dissing my fashion sense," said Willow angrily. " Well if I were you I wouldn't talk," said the normally sweet girl while looking at Buffy's mini skirt and baby tee.

Then Willow gave Buffy an acid smile , " That look is so last year."

Buffy looked at Willow stunned. " Willow I didn't say that. What's your problem?"

Willow rolled her brown eyes, " My problem is that I have to get to class and you're in my way."

Then Willow turned back to the boys, smiled and said sweetly, " Coming boys?"

The booys grinned and followed Willow as she breezed past Buffy to class.

Buffy stood in the hall, now extremely confused.

" What the hell," she thought aloud," It's like pod people have abducted the school."

Buffy turned to see someone behind her.she yelped frightened, at first. It was Cordelia Chase. Or maybe not.

Cordelia, the most popular girl in school and self proclaimed fashion expert, wasn't looking like her normal beauty queen self. She was wearing jeans and a t-shirt. Most surprisingly though were the thick, black framed glasses that sat atop her nose.

"Oh god I'm sorry, Buffy, " Cordelia said timidly , " I didn't mean to frighten you. I'll go away now."

Buffy put a hand on Cordelia's shoulder to hault her.

"No Cordelia, wait. What's up?"

"Oh, I just was going to tell you ," she started while pushing her glasses up on her nose, "not to let Willow get you down. She hasen't been too nice lately."

Buffy noded, " Cordelia. I need you to help me with something."

"Me? Sure! What is it," she asked near excitement.

Buffy gave her an odd look. " I need you to get Ms. Calendar to meet me and you, at lunch. Hopefully she's not wigged and can help."

Cordelia nodded and said, " I have her class next , which I should be getting to. I wouldn't want to be late. I'll tell her."

Buffy nodded, then Cordelia walked away.

* * *
Buffy waited outside at lunch for the others to meet her. Her rubbed her eyes tierdly. She felt exhausted. Hopefully Ms. Calendar would be able to help. She looked around. It was like the tables had turned for almost everyone. People who had been popular yesterday was now sitting at the nerds table, and nerds( well unpopular people) were now popular. Buffy didn't get it. Xander was cool guy on campus with all these girls drooling over him. Willow had every guy hanging around her. She was little Miss popular and little Miss bitchy too. And Buffy haden't even seen Giles. She didn't even want to think what might be up with him.

Suddenly Cordelia sat down next to Buffy, her eyes glued on the table across from them. She was looking at Xander.

"Oh! Isn't he the hottest, " Cordelia said dreamily.

Buffy raised her eyebrows. " Yeah. I guess."

Ms. Calendar suddenly appeared. " Hey. Buffy, Cordelia. I'm assuming you guys are noticing that things are a little....."

"Whiggy," Buffy offered.

"Yeah," Calendar replied, " People are acting out of character. It's really strange."

"That's why I asked you to come, " Buffy said , " I'm thinking that maybe all this is something caused by the fact that we're on the hellmouth. What do you think?"

Cordelia just kept staring dreamily at Xander.

"Well," Calendar started, " I definetly think it's worth looking into."

Suddenly the chatter around them was broken by the sound of a loud engine. It was a guy tearing down the street on a motorcycle, hollering at the top of his lungs.

Calendar giggled slightly, " And that would be what happened to Giles."

Buffy looked at her shocked, " We have to find out what's going on here before people start doing things they'll regret."

Coredila looked at the others. " Too late," she said.

* * *
Cordelia sat in the stacks with Buffy searching through as many books as possible, while Ms. Calendar hopped on the net to try to find the cause of all this craziness.

Buffy looked over at Cordelia. It was kind of shocking that Cordy was willing to help her. Cordelia wasn't always, well, she wasn't especailly nice to people. But today she was being very helpful.Too bad she can't always be like this Buffy thought.

Buffy rubbed the back of her neck, she still wasn't feeling all too well. But she put that aside and kept looking through the books for info.

"Hey you guys," Buffy and Cordelia heard Ms. Calendar call.

They came out of the stacks quickly. " What is it," Buffy asked.

"I think I may have found something," she replied. The girls rushed over.

"It says here," Calendar started, " that every seventy five years the moon goes through a pattern of phases. These phases have a sort of cosmic pull on the earth, and it is said to cause irrational behavior; change in attitude; and other various aillments. And since we're on the hellmouth, it kinda makes things more drastic."

"So how come you and Buffy don't seem to be affected," Cordelia asked thoughtfully.

"Well it effects different people differently. Some people aren't effected much, others....well you know."

"Well how do we stop it," Buffy asked.

Ms. Calendar frowned, " We can't. It lasts for two days. It's like a virus, you have to let it run its course."

"So what do we do til then," Cordelia asked.

"We try to keep everyone from making complete idiots out of themselves."
