vampire (vam’pir’) n. [Fr < Ger vampir, of Slav orig., as in Serb vŕmpīr] 1 in folklore and popular superstition, a corpse that becomes reanimated and leaves its grave at night to suck the blood of sleeping persons 2 the soulless, possessed body of the un-dead, sired by another vampire and seeking to drink the blood of the living —vampiristic adj. —vamp-out v. —vampirism n.

Vampire: Any of the ‘half-breed,’ ‘mongrel’ agents of evil left over from the Ancient times when ‘pure-blood’ demons and other evil creatures ruled the Earth. Each vampire since the first was sired by another vampire through a process of first being drained of blood, then drinking the blood of the sire.

Vampires are nocturnal and photophobic, that is they fear light, with good reason, since when exposed to direct sunlight, they undergo photolysis (chemical decomposition, through combustion, by exposure to light). They tend, therefore, to remain underground and inactive during daylight hours and only become active and feed during the night.

Vampires can appear human at will, but they retain the non-human features of a thickened forehead and orbital bones, distorted nasal bones, yellow irises and elongated canines when they feed or become angry or agitated.

The vampire has super-humanly acute hearing and sense of smell, great strength and agility and superior stamina. Certain vampires also have the ability to transmute (shape-shift) at will and influence / control the minds of lesser beings.

Vampires can be killed either by decapitation (removal of the head), piercing of the heart with a wooden object (stake) or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight (photolysis). Preventing a vampires from feeding for an extended period of time is not lethal, but does cause them severe agony and weakens their super-human abilities.

The current status of vampires is un-dead, and while it is unlikely that they will ever be completely scoured from the Earth, their numbers are decreasing since the initiation of all potential slayers in the summer of A.D. 2003.
