Angel walked the dark streets of Los Angeles all alone. He had always been alone some way or the other, but this time he was truly alone. All of his friends were dead. Dead, because of him. Doyle, Cordelia, Fred, Wes, Gunn, even Spike, all dead because of their involvement with him and his path for redemption. It was one year ago that the remaining members of his gang, Wes, Gunn, Spike, and Illyria all died helping him take out the Circle of the Black Thorn. He knew they would not make it through it, and even though they still agreed to help him after realizing it would lead to their deaths, he still felt like it was his fault. He should have been destroyed with the rest of them, but he wasn't. While he and the surviving members of his gang were fighting the demons the Senior Partners of Wolfram and Hart sent after them, the Senior Partners decided his life would be more of a hell if he was the soul survivor. Sucking Hamilton's blood, which contained the power of the Wolf, Ram, and Hart, probably helped him as well. Now, he was alone. He could still see back to that fateful night. The gang just finished their separate assignments while Angel battled Hamilton. After killing him, Angel met up with the only members of the gang to survive: Spike, Gunn, and Illyria. Just as they met up, the Senior Partners rained hell upon them. Thousands of demons and otherworldly creatures attacked them. Gunn was bleeding to death and all four of them knew he wouldn't last long. They were right. About 10 or 15 minutes into the fight, Gunn fell to the ground, having bled to death from his injuries. A little while later, Illyria, who had just been brutally beaten, was killed. Even though he and Spike were hopelessly outnumbered, they didn't run. They continued to fight until one of the demons cut Spike's head off, which is one of the few things fatal to a vampire. Angel continued to fight, all alone, until the Senior Partners finally decided that letting him live would be a much crueler punishment than killing him. So, Angel lost everyone he cared about and had not been in contact with anyone since. He had just settled in somewhere when a girl came up to him. It was Cordelia.
