“I tear my heart open, I sew myself shut my weakness is that I care too much and my scars remind me that the past is real I tear my heart open just to feel”
The music in Buffy’s headphones blared as she sat staring out the window of the plane she was on. The plane was headed towards England and a godfather she barley knew. It had been decided that after everything that happened it might be best if she went to go spend the summer with her godfather; Rupert Giles.
Buffy was furious when she found out the decision had been made without any regard to her feelings. She did not want to leave Sunnydale it was her home, her life was there and she did not want to spend the summer with her godfather. She had few memories of the man but she had come to the conclusion that she did not like him.
Yet, despite her protests she had some how ended up on a plane bound for England. Buffy stared out the window as the plane neared land. ‘This was going to be a long summer’, she thought as the plane began its decent.
*****************************
When Buffy got off the plane and entered the airport, no one was there to greet her. She sighed as she picked up her bag and made her way out of the airport, watching happy couples and families embrace each other. She hadn’t expected anyone to care enough to show up in person but she thought they would have at least send a cab or something.
*****************************
Buffy stepped out of the airport and into the sunlight. As she looked around for a phone or some way to get home an attractive man on a motorcycle pulled up in front of her.
“Hey, are you lost?” he asked her with a smile and without an English accent, he was undoubtedly American.
“No I know exactly where I am and where I’m going it’s just the getting there part that’s giving me trouble.”
He laughed, “I’m Lindsey and if you need a lift I’d be happy to give you one.”
Buffy wasn’t so sure this was a good idea she barley knew this guy but she figured he was okay and accepted the offer despite her better judgment, “That would be great. I’m Buffy by the way.”
“Nice to meet you. So where are you going?”
Buffy handed him the address she had scribbled on a piece of paper a few days earlier, “Here.”
“Alright, well hop on,” he said as Buffy got on the bike and they zoomed off.
************************
Eventually, they pulled up to a large house. Actually it looked more like a mansion Buffy thought as she got off the bike.
“Well, thanks for the ride.”
“No problem. Hey if you feel like going out some time or something give me a call,” he said as he handed her a piece of paper with his number on it, “There’s a party going in a few days not far from here. It suppose to be awesome.”
“Thanks. I’ll think about,” she said and with that he drove off.
***********************
Buffy turned around to stare at the house in front of her; wow she thought as she walked up to the door and rang the bell. Soon the door opened and Buffy was greeted by a woman with dark hair. She was probably in her late 30s and very pretty.
“Hello, can I help you?” the woman asked.
“Umm, yeah hi, I’m Buffy and...”
“Oh, Rupert’s goddaughter of course. Please come in,” she said as she moved aside to let Buffy in the house, “I thought he was picking you up at the airport; he left for Land’s End an hour ago.”
“Oh, I flew into Newcastle,” Buffy said. Well, at least he was planning on coming Buffy thought.
“Oh well I better call him and tell him what’s happened. I’m Jenny by the way, Jenny Calendar,” she said with a smile, “If you could just wait here I’ll call him and then show you to your room.”
“Sure.”
**********************
“Hello?” Giles said as he picked up his cell phone. He hated it but Jenny had insisted he got one in case of an emergency. At the moment he was on his way to the airport to pick up his goddaughter, whom he had not seen for about 10 years. He assumed the girl he would be meeting soon would be much different then the young girl he had known. He felt terrible when he thought about all the pain the young woman of only 17 had endured. It had undoubtedly affected her. He also in a way felt partially responsible. The voice on the other end of the phone interrupted his thoughts.
“Rupert? Rupert? Are you still there?” Jenny asked.
“Yes, yes, I’m here. What is it?”
“Buffy is here at the house. You must have gotten the wrong airport.”
“Oh dear, tell her I’m dreadfully sorry and that I will be home as soon as possible.”
“Okay. Bye.”
“Goodbye,” Giles said as he hung up the phone and told the driver to turn around. This is a splendid start Giles thought sarcastically.
****************
Buffy was standing in the foyer when Jenny re-entered the room. “He says he’s sorry for the mix up and he’ll be home as soon as he can. That probably won’t be for awhile though. Why don’t I show you to your room,” Jenny said warmly.
Buffy liked her; Jenny reminded her of her mom- kind and caring. Her mom, Buffy’s heart ached over what had happened to her, but she pushed the thoughts and the pain associated with them away. That was why she was here because of her dad and her mom and what had happened that night; the memories still haunted her. She didn’t want to think about that right now; if she did she knew she would cry and she was not one to let people witness her pain, especially a complete stranger.
“Here, let me take your bag,” Jenny said snapping Buffy out of her daydream, more like a nightmare Buffy thought.
“Oh, no you don’t have to do that,” Buffy said.
“It’s my job.”
“Your job?” Buffy asked confused.
“Yes, I work for Rupe… I mean Mr. Giles.”
“Oh, I thought…”
“You thought what?” Jenny said leading her upstairs.
“Nothing,” Buffy said a little too quickly to be convincing. She had thought Jenny was Giles’s girlfriend or perhaps even his fiancé or wife. It didn’t even cross her mind that Jenny might be the help. Not that she cared but she had just assumed the way she acted and talked about him that they were involved.
“Well, here's your room,” Jenny said as she opened the door to a large room with a canopy bed, a vanity, dressers, an oversized armchair, and a large amour. The walls were covered in flowered wallpaper and there was a large window opposite from the door with a window seat and a beautiful view.
“It’s great,” Buffy said, “Thank you.”
“Make yourself at home and if you need anything just call,” she said indicating the phone on the nightstand next to the bed, “Number 8, I’ll be sure to call you when Mr. Giles gets here.”
“Okay,” Buffy answered as Jenny left closing the door on her way out. Buffy ran over to the bed a flopped on to it.
