Buffy backed off a little and looked at the ground. “Oh, well that is a slight problem,” she said, tears in her eyes.
Spike went towards the stairs. “I’m sorry, Buffy. You just hurt me way too much. I still feel for you, but I don’t know if its love,” he said, going upstairs.
Buffy heard the back door open and close before picking her head up. The truth of his words hit her hard and caused her to crumble in pain. She collapsed to the floor and curled on her side. The cold cement floor not bothering her as she sobbed.
Someone opened the basement door and came down the stairs. “Buffy?” Came Dawn’s voice. Buffy just sobbed harder. Dawn crouched beside her sister and pulled Buffy’s head into her lap. “What happened? Spike was crying when he left,” she said.
“He doesn’t love me anymore,” Buffy whimpered.
“Yes he does. Why does it matter?” Dawn asked.
“We had a really bad fight. I told him I missed him and he yelled at me about everything that happened last year,” she whimpered.
Dawn frowned. “Obviously he didn’t mean it because he was really upset when he left,” she said, climbing to her feet. She held her hand out to Buffy. “Come on. Lets get you upstairs.”
Buffy shook her head. “I just wanna stay here a little longer,” she said.
Dawn rolled her eyes. “Buffy, you need to go find Spike and fix this,” Dawn said, hands on her hips.
Buffy looked up at her sister. “What did you think I was doing? I was trying to have it all out and he just yelled at me and left,” she said.
Dawn rolled her eyes again. “If he means that much to you, get off the floor and go find him,” she said, going upstairs.
Upstairs, Dawn looked out the back door and Spike was sitting on the back porch. His head was in his hands and his shoulders were shaking.
Dawn frowned and went out to him. She sat next to him and wrapped her arms around him
Spike wrapped his arms around her and sobbed silently.
Shortly, his sobs quieted. “Why are you still up?” He asked.
“Just checking on you and Buffy,” she said, wiping his tears. “Buffy’s crying on the basement floor and you’re out here. What happened?”
“I explained to her why we can’t be together,” he said.
“Why can’t you?” Dawn asked.
“Because she doesn’t want it. Not really. Dawn, she really hurt me last year and I hurt you. We can’t have a relationship like that,” he said.
Dawn kissed his forehead tenderly. “I understand. I’ll get Buffy out of the basement then you can get some sleep,” she said softly.
“Thanks, Nibblet,” Spike said.
“I love you,” Dawn said.
Spike looked at her. “I love you too,” he whispered.
Dawn smiled. “I’ll see you in the morning,” she said, standing.
“Okay,” Spike said. “Goodnight Dawn.”
Dawn went downstairs and Buffy was still on the floor with tears running down her face.
“Buffy, come on. Get up,” Dawn said, pulling Buffy to her feet. Dawn took Buffy upstairs and Buffy assured her she was okay.
Dawn left Buffy in the kitchen and stuck her head out the back door. “Spike?”
Spike turned to look at her as she stood. “Yeah?”
“You’re still gunna be here tomorrow?” She asked.
“I’m not leaving, Nibblet,” he said.
Dawn smiled. “Basements all yours.”
“Thanks. Now bedtime,” he said smiling.
Dawn went in and went upstairs.
Spike looked at Buffy who was leaning against the wall in the dining room. There were still tears in her eyes when their eyes met. Spike almost gave in but held his ground.
Buffy turned and ran upstairs and Spike finally went inside.
Buffy collapsed on her bed and sobbed. “God, I hate you Spike,” she whimpered. She sobbed for hours before falling asleep.
Downstairs, Spike was pacing and his keen ears picked up Buffy’s sobs. He sat heavily on the cot and sighed. Eventually he fell asleep.
