With her voice quivering, Willow said, "Mom, Dad, this is Angel."
With the spotlight off her for a second, Buffy took the opportunity to head out the door and Willow took off after her, leaving Angel and her parents inside. Mrs. Rosenberg spoke up, "Well, I don’t know where her manners are, but I’m sure that she’ll be right back, have a seat."
* * *
Willow ran as fast as she could, but Buffy quickly lost her. Willow turned and headed home. * What is Angel doing showing up at my house like that? What is he thinking? * She finally reached her house. As she climbed the stairs, she could hea r her mother say, "So, Angel, where do you know Willow from?" "We met at the Bronze, and we have a lot of mutual friends." Angel was trying to come up with answers to all of her parents’ questions.
Willow slowly opened the front door. Her mother stood up and said, "There you are young lady! We were beginning to wonder about you. Your nice friend Angel was telling us about how the two of you know each other." Willow glanced at Angel who appeared to be amused at the situation. * What’s so funny? * Mrs. Rosenberg stood up and said, "Well, now that you are home, your father and I will be heading into the kitchen." She nudged Mr. Rosenberg, who didn’t seem to get the h int. "Oh," he said, "we’ll be in the kitchen."
When the kitchen door closed, Angel started, "Willow we need to talk." "I know, I couldn’t catch Buffy. Do you have any idea where she could have gone?" "Well, yes, but we need to talk … why don’t we go for a walk and see if we can find her?"
"OK, let’s find her," Willow answered. She went to tell her parents. Meanwhile, Angel tossed the flowers onto the table. "Well, here goes nothing."
* * *
"Maybe we should check the graveyards, or the funeral homes or maybe she just went home? What do you think?" "Huh?" Angel replied.
"Where should we check for Buffy?" Willow persisted. "She should be patrolling, so let’s check the graveyard."
As they approached the graveyard, Angel spoke up, "Let’s sit down for awhile." He sat on a tombstone and motioned for her to sit down next to him. "Willow, I’ve been thinking about what has been going on the last couple of months, and I think that we need to sit down and talk." He paused for a moment to find the correct place to start. Willow started to protest, "But Buffy …" "She can take care of herself," Angel answered. "I need to talk to you right now. This isn’t easy for me, and when I start will you promise not to interrupt me?" She nodded and said, "Go ahead."
Angel dropped his eyes to the ground and began, "When Buffy and I broke up, I was upset and ready to leave Sunnydale forever, but something made me come back and that was you. You’ve always been a friend to me Willow, after everything I put you a nd your friends through. And I guess that I didn’t appreciate it at the time, I’m sorry." "Oh Angel, that’s OK," Willow started. Angel glared at her, "You promised." He sighed and began again: "You’re the reason I return ed. I missed you, your laugh, you smile … Sometime during the last few weeks, something changed. You weren’t just Buffy’s friend Willow, or my friend Willow, you became more. I wanted to spend more time with you, but I didn’t know how to tell you. I’d wait all night to see if you would call, but you usually didn’t. I guess I got so bad that I started watching you. I didn’t mean to make you upset, I just wanted to see you. So I came to your house tonight, I had to find out if there was any chance th at you … that we could …" He waited for her to react, but was unable to read her expressions.
* Angel, how could he have any sort of feelings for me? I’m no one, and he is so … wow … Oh, he’s staring at me. What do I say? * She smiled. * He’s smiling at me; I feel tingly. * Angel said, "I don’t want to scare you off, or ru sh you." "I understand," she said, "nice and slow, a date or two …" "And hide it from no one …" Angel finished.
"How do we tell people? ‘Hello Buffy, guess what I have a date tonight, wanna double?’" Willow asked. He laughed, "I’ve got to be careful, you’re got something worse that a big brother, you’ve got a slayer looking out for you. What do you think will be the best way to tell everyone?" "Well, I think Buffy’s got an idea what’s going on, I’ll tell Xander, he’ll be shocked but I think that he’ll understand. Buffy will tell Giles …" Angel spoke up, "Can’t we just a void him for a few days? What if we go on a date and you find out you can’t stand me? I hate to deal with the wrath of Giles if …" "So, I’m not worth it?" Will joked. "I’ll tell him," Angel conceded.
A cold breeze blew through the cemetery, and Willow shivered. "I guess I should get you home," Angel said, "I don’t want your parents to dislike me." So they started walking back to Willow’s. Along the way, the plan was laid. Wi llow would call Xander when she got home, and Angel would go find Buffy. He would come over tomorrow night, Sunday, and they would go see Giles.
When they got to Willow’s front porch, Angel turned to her and said, "I want you to know that this is just a date, no strings attached. If things aren’t working just tell me, treat me as close to a normal guy as you can." "I will," ; she smiled, "but the same holds for you, we can go back to being friends, just tell me." He nodded. She walked up the steps and looked back at him, "Goodnight Angel." "Goodnight Willow." And she went inside the house. * Now I have to tell Xander that I have a date next weekend … *
