Cassandra’s Journal: January 25, 1998:

It has been a few days since I last wrote in this journal. Many things have happened. The Judge was defeated. It took a rocket launcher, but he was defeated. Angelus is still a problem. Come to find out, Jenny Calendar was actually a gypsy that was sent to Sunnydale for the sole purpose of spying on Angelus and making sure that he did not achieve any happiness. It was his achieving true happiness that was the catalyst of him losing his human soul. It seems that it was part of the curse. If he ever achieve true happiness, his soul would be taken from him. Angelus’ moment of true happiness and contentment came in the form of him making love to Buffy.

According to Jenny, the magiks that restored his soul originally are long lost to her people. So, it seems that unless a miracle happens and they find a spell to restore his soul, the demon Angelus is here to stay.

Ever since the defeat of The Judge, Angelus has kept a low profile. It know that it will not stay that way. I know he is just biding his time and trying to figure out the perfect time to strike. The night that The Judge was defeated, Buffy did fight him. According to her, she had a chance to kill him, but she couldn’t do it. I imagine that it is hard for her to kill the demon that wears the face of the man that she loved. I hope that she gets over that soon. If she doesn’t have the strength to kill him, everyone she loves, and eventually her, will die a very painful and violent death. She has no idea the lengths that Angelus will go to torture someone. Unfortunately I do, and that is what scares me so much.

Cassandra’s apartment: 5:25am:

After writing in her journal, Cassandra attempted to get some sleep. She had not gotten much lately. Her mind was on Angelus and the threat that he posed. Finally, Cassandra fell into a dream filled sleep.

It was the house that she grew up in, she recognized the opulent furnishings and carpets.

Cassandra wandered around the seemingly empty house until she saw a small child dart across one of the sitting rooms. It was her little brother, Thomas. The child did not see her. Just like many of the dreams about her past, Cassandra was just an observer, not a participant. Cassandra watched the child play for a few minutes. She got an uncomfortable lump in her throat as she watched. Cassandra knew that this child’s innocent happiness would be short lived. Angelus would see to that.

Suddenly, one of the servants came in and ushered the boy out of the room. Cassandra decided to look around a bit more. She knew that the more she explored the more painful memories she would uncover. However, she could not stop herself.

Cassandra then went upstairs. The first things she saw were servant hustling around. Many were carrying expensive ballgowns. Slowly, Cassandra walked inside her old room. There she saw her sister Clara and herself as a human. They were getting ready for what looked like one of the many balls that they had to attend when they were young. Cassandra decided to listen in on the conversation.

“Clara, that green does look magnificent on you. It goes well with your eyes.” Said Cassandra’s human self.

“Thanks Mary.” Cassandra’s throat got another emotional lump in it when she heard her sister call her by her Christian name, her human name. She had not been called that since she had become a vampire. Angelus preferred calling her by her middle name, Cassandra, and it stuck.

Cassandra then continued to listen in on the conversation. Her younger sister, Clara, was speaking. “So, how does it feel to be fifteen? It won’t be long till you marry.” Suddenly, it hit her. She remembered when this party was. It was her fifteenth birthday celebration. Also, this birthday was two days before the day of her calling as the Slayer; two days before the end of her innocence. Before her calling, all she had to worry about was her social standing, the next party, and whom she was going to marry. Coming from a family that was a part of London’s high society, she never had to worry about anything else. In a few days time, this rich, spoiled, child would be given the task of saving the world from demons. It would change her cloistered and shallow life forever.

She watched the two teenagers get ready for a little longer. She watched them talk about the latest London gossip and what was going on with the royal family. It hurt Cassandra to see her sister again in this dream. She knew how everything would end. It would end with Clara being one of the vampire Cassandra’s first victim. The all familiar pang of guilt hit Cassandra, she did not want to watch anymore. She did not want towatch those two sisters in happy times knowing that they would not last much longer.

Cassandra awoke from her troubled sleep in the afternoon. She hated dreams about her past. However, that was the way many of her dreams were. Seeing Clara and Thomas again, even in a dream, was very painful. However, no tears were shed. Cassandra figured out when she was still slaying, especially after she met Angelus, that tears were ineffectual. She never did allow herself the luxury of being able to grieve.
