Cassandra’s journal: October 5, 1997
This has been a very eventful day. My secret identity was revealed, I uncovered an evil plot, and I even helped plan a counter-offensive. It’s so contrived that it almost seems like I’m living in someone else’s work of fiction. I first got a visit from our friendly neighborhood Slayer. She found out where I was staying and came over. Through research, she found out that I used to be the Slayer before I was brought across. She wanted to know if it was true. I told her the truth. I just couldn’t lie to her, it wouldn’t have been fair.
Then I found out about a plan to destroy the Slayer and her friends. I called Angel and told him. He then insisted that I come with him to tell them. He wants the group to trust me. Why does he even care? After helping plan a counter offensive, Giles spoke to me for a while. He wanted to know about what happened to my watcher. I told him that I killed him. Then, he totally surprised me. He asked me to stay in Sunnydale to help permanently. He actually wants me here, this is definitely a first for me. I don’t know why he trusts me, but he does. I agreed to stay, I hope I don’t end up regretting that decision. Giles told me that I would be helpful to Buffy because I know what she is going through. Now, I’m not sure that Buffy will be too eager for my help. She acts very uncomfortable around me, hopefully that will change. I really want to help her, hopefully she won’t make the same mistakes that I did. Maybe she will get to live longer than I did.

Sunnydale Library: 7:45am:
The library was empty except for Giles. Buffy and the group had not shown up yet. All night he had been getting all of the weapons ready for the attack. He was confident with their combined forces, that they would prevail. Hopefully, the vampires would be caught off guard when they find out that the group was prepared. Angel and Cassandra’s help would most definitely be required.
Giles’ thoughts drifted back to Cassandra. She was such an enigma to him. A former Slayer, turned vampire, turned vampire with a soul. He could not explain why he trusted her so much. He just had this feeling that she would be a very important ally in the future. He believed that Cassandra truly had the desire to help. One of the things that Giles always prided himself on was that he was an excellent judge of character. He knew that Cassandra was sincere. Convincing Buffy of that would be hard. Buffy did not trust Cassandra. During their meeting the night before, Buffy was very suspicious of everything Cassandra said or did. Giles hoped that soon Buffy would learn to trust her.
Around 8:00am Buffy, Xander, and Willow entered the library. “Hey G-man.” Xander called out.
“Xander, when are you going to stop using that ridiculous name for me.” Giles asked in an exasperated tone.
“Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.” Buffy teased.
“Buffy, you need to train for tonight. It would also help if the two of you got a bit of training as well.” Giles said, referring to Willow and Xander. “We will need everyone to be at their best tonight.”
“What time is this supposed to happen?” Asked Xander.
“Cassandra didn’t find that out. She just said it would be tonight. Probably fairly early, since Spike thinks that we are researching here.” Answered Giles.
“Now, why are we trusting Cassandra?” Buffy asked sarcastically.
“Buffy, I believe she is sincere. Anyway, she has a soul, the test proved it.” Giles tried to reassure Buffy.
“Yeah, I know what the test said, but I just don’t like that we are trusting a vampire. Soul or no soul.”
Willow spoke up. “Buffy, you trust Angel.”
“Willow, please don’t tell me that you trust her too. Anyway, Angel is different.”
“From what I saw last night, I trust her. She’s nice, she’s like Angel.” Said Willow.
Buffy was getting angry. “She is nothing like Angel! Don’t try to tell me any different. What’s next? Are you going to start saying that her and Angel belong together because their both vampires with souls!”
Xander smiled. “I think someone’s jealous.”
“Xander, I’m not jealous. Well, maybe a little, but that doesn’t matter now. We just have to get through tonight. Anyway, I’m not going to relax around her. I’ll still watch my back, just in case.” Stated Buffy, stubbornly.
“Buffy, I understand why you don’t trust Cassandra. You are the Slayer, she is a vampire. It’s natural to feel suspicion. However, don’t let petty jealousy get in the way of defeating the vampires tonight. All of us will need to trust eachother to survive tonight.” Giles reasoned. “Now, all of you get to your classes. I’ll see you at lunch.” With that, the group was effectively dismissed.

Cassandra’s Hotel Room: 6:00pm:
The sun had set about fifteen minutes ago, but Cassandra had been awake for a few hours before that, as was her custom. She had just gotten out of the shower and dressed when she heard a knock at her door. Looking through the peephole, she was surprised when she saw Angel standing on the other side of her door. Cassandra opened the door. “Angel, what is it?”
Angel answered. “We need to talk.”
“Sure, come on in.” Said Cassandra while moving out of the way of the threshold. “I assume that this is about Buffy.”
“Actually yes. I assume you saw the way she was uncomfortable around you last night?”
Cassandra chuckled slightly. “Yeah, that was a little hard to miss.”
“I walked her home last night. From what she said, I don’t think she trusts you.”
“I know. Why would she trust me? An ex lover of someone that she has really taken an interest in shows up out of the blue. Not only that, this person is a vampire that has killed four of her kind before. She has no reason to trust me.” Cassandra reasoned.
Angel nodded. “I know, but I want her to. You can be a big help here. You are probably one of the strongest vampires around, if not the strongest because you used to be the Slayer. Buffy needs a powerful ally like you.”
“I got this speech last night from Mr. Giles. He wants me to stay.”
“He’s right. What did you tell him?” Angel asked.
“I told him I would. I feel it is the least I can do. I’ve killed enough Slayers, I figured that it was time I helped one for a change.”
“Good, I’m glad you are staying. However, we have another problem. I believe that Buffy thinks that because we had a relationship in the past, that we might open things up again.”
“Little does she know that it went far beyond a relationship.” Cassandra said in a voice barely above a whisper.
“I know.” Angel said while turning away from Cassandra. “Our demons are bonded. This complicates things.”
“She doesn’t need to know. That was the past, when our demons were in control. Now that we have souls, the bond won’t effect us anymore.”
“Cassandra, I don’t want to lie to her.” Angel stated with conviction.
Cassandra rolled her eyes. “What are you going to tell her Angel? ‘Ah Buffy, you know that new vampire with a soul that has come to town. Well, since she was a Slayer when she was turned, one of the side effects of turning a slayer is that our demons are strongly bonded for eternity.’ Even though, since we have souls, it doesn’t really apply now, I don’t think that she would understand.” Cassandra was starting to get annoyed with Angel. “Should you include the fact that at that time, if we wanted to, we could hear eachother’s thoughts?” Said Cassandra sarcastically.
“You’re right, she wouldn’t understand; but what should I do.” Angel asked.
“Tell her that whatever we had together is over, and it will never happen again. Anyway, that doesn’t matter now. Let’s just get through tonight. We’ll deal with whatever happens after that.”
