It was a typical morning the Summers’ “home”. Dawn woke up at her desk surrounded by books. Stretching, she listened for sounds of life in the apartment. Hearing nothing, she assumed Buffy was still sleeping and got up to begin her day. She left her room heading into the kitchen for a hearty breakfast of—there really wasn’t much there. Maybe it was time to run to the store….

She walked over to Buffy’s room and reached out to open the door when she heard her sisters muffled voice.

“Listen, I understand it’s serious, but I’m on vacation. Permanently…how can I really help anyway? We already tried a bunch of stuff in Cleveland, what can we do now…. I’m half way across the globe, it’s not like I can just stop by on my way to the market…Yes, I understand…Oh, she’s fine… I know you think she should be in school, but she is getting a great education by seeing the world and…Listen, you are not her guardian, I am. I will raise her however I feel is best… I don’t want her around that stuff anymore… Listen, I have to go… Yes, I will. Bye.”

Dawn heard the phone slam down and she dodged away from the door as her sister flung it open. “Dawn!?!” Buffy exclaimed. “How long have you been standing there?”

“I wasn’t standing there! I was on my way to the bathroom when you practically impaled me with your head!” Dawn lied.

“Oh, sorry about the storming and head impaling,” Buffy said briskly.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” Buffy answered. “I just woke up on the wrong side of the world this morning!” she said, exasperated. “So, Dawnie, what’s for breakfast?” She added cheerily, trying to bring up her mood.

“Well, we don’t really have anything left at the moment but week old take out and half an orange,” Dawn said with a shrug. “I was thinking of going to the store and picking something up.”

“Or we could go out for breakfast this morning. Remember, I did promise morning bonding!” Buffy said with a smile, putting her arm around her no longer smaller little sister.

“Ooooh! That sounds like fun! There’s this place up a couple of blocks I have been dying to try,” Dawn answered excitedly, forgetting for a moment the phone call she had just overheard.

“Okay, let me just pull some clothes on and run a brush through my hair and we are out of here.”

“I just have to grab my shoes and I am totally ready!” Dawn exclaimed.

“Um, Dawn?” Buffy said. Dawn looked at her sister expectantly. “Didn’t you wear those clothes yesterday?”

“These?” Dawn asked, a little worried. Shoot, she had forgotten to change again! She really needed to remember to do that. “No, I just put these on this morning. I have this shirt in another color, I must have worn that yesterday.”

Buffy looked at her for a moment but shrugged, accepting Dawn’s answer, and went into her bedroom to get changed. Dawn let out a sigh of relief. She was going to have to be more careful. There were too many close calls recently. Her tummy let out a large rumble reminding her of the upcoming breakfast-y goodness.

“Hurry up Buffy,” Dawn called. “If I have to wait much longer I might waste away into nothingness from starvation!” she whined.

“Goodness, you are awfully impatient this morning. Where’s the fire?”

“No fire, just a plate of eggs benedict with my name on them!”

“Alright lets go.” Buffy said. She took her sister’s hand and they walked out of the apartment and into the cool morning breeze.

************************

“Wow, Dawn, you need to slow down. People are going to think I never feed you at home!” Buffy said laughing, watching her sister put an overly large forkful of egg into her mouth.

“If’s joosf so goomd,” Dawn said through her mouthful of food. Buffy let out a laugh.

“Excuse me,” she heard someone say from behind her.

“Yes,” Buffy answered turning around to face a teenage boy with a heavy accent. He looked very familiar but she couldn’t place him.

“I think I know you,” he said, looking at Buffy. “And you,” he nodded at Dawn.

The Summers women looked at each other and Dawn swallowed hard. She remembered him, he was the boy from last night. Ugh, what was she going to do now!

“I think you must have us mistaken with someone else,” Buffy said calmly.

“No,” he said. “Remember, last night? That thing you did and all the dust? And you were there,” he said, pointing at Dawn. “I am sure of it. You are still wearing the same clothes, but you had glasses, and a lot of books.” He studied Dawn for a moment.

“That’s impossible,” Dawn stammered. “I didn’t go out last night, I was at home, watching movies, all alone.” She smiled at her sister.

By this point Buffy had recognized the boy from last night but she was not about to let him know that. “As I said before, you must be mistaken. My sister told you she was home all night and I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“Are you sure?” he asked, confused. “I could have sworn….”

“Are you alright?” Buffy asked. “Do you need any help? I can call the waitress and I am sure she would let you use the phone.”

“No, that’s okay.” He began to walk away. “Wait.” He turned abruptly, almost knocking a tray of juice over in the process. “This, I found this,” he fished in his pocket to retrieve the necklace, “last night,” he finished.

“That’s where that……” Dawn started, but was cut off by a glair from her sister. “I mean, that’s so totally not mine,” she corrected with a shake of her head.

With that, Buffy rose from the table. “Come on.” She gestured at Dawn to stand. “We have to go.”

They both stood and brushed past the boy holding out the necklace. “You and I are going to have a very long talk when we get home.” Buffy scolded. Dawn just rolled her eyes.
