“NOOOOO!!!” Willow screamed, thrashing, tangled in the sheet. “This isn’t the way it was supposed to happen, let me go!!”

Kennedy ran into the room and moved to Willow’s side. “Shhhh,” she said, taking Willow’s thrashing arms in her hands and gently guiding them back to the bed. This did little to calm the redhead as she began to whimper, crying slightly and struggling to get free from Kennedy’s grasp.

“Willow, look at me, Willow.” Kennedy said in a stern voice looking into Willow’s face. “Willow, it’s me Kennedy. Please baby, look at me.” Willow was now struggling harder against Kennedy’s hands, struggling to free herself. She was mumbling incoherently, as if possessed.

“Willow, I know you can hear me. Snap out of it. Come back to me. I know you can do it.” Willow gave one last straining attempt to free herself and then collapsed limply on the bed.

“Kennedy?” she asked, looking up at her as if seeing her for the first time.

“Yes, baby, it’s me,” Kennedy replied with relief, smiling.

“She’s gone,” Willow stated simply. “Another one is gone.” Wrapping her arms around Kennedy’s neck she began to sob.

**************************

Kennedy sat by the window drinking a cup of coffee and watching the city. She loved the city. It had a life all it’s own. It was her home and she was so happy to be back. Her father was also happy to have her back and had bought she and Willow this lovely new apartment at Astor Place. The apartment was large, with enough space for the girls to live comfortably, but also have room for Kennedy’s training equipment and Willow’s books. But Kennedy wasn’t thinking about the apartment this morning. She was just watching the city. She was lost in all the crowds below. Watching them all race to get wherever it was they had to go. Everyone in New York was in such a hurry to get everywhere and she loved to watch them all rush about like worker bees.

She got lost sipping her coffee and staring down at the street below. Her mind began to wander. She started thinking about her life and Willow. God, she loved that girl. She loved her more than she thought possible, yet sometimes she worried that wasn’t enough. Willow had been “sick” for so long and finally when Kennedy thought she was better she was here again, by the window after a long night of staying awake with Willow through one of her attacks.

Kennedy hated thinking like this. She knew it wasn’t Willow’s fault. And Kennedy would be by her side, always, because she loved her. She really did love her. Kennedy smiled at the thought, remembering better times, times before all the attacks.

Cleveland – July, 2003
It was warm outside, breezy and sunny. Kennedy had listened to the weather channel all day to make sure there was no sign of rain. Everything had to be perfect. This was their first outing alone since the defeat of the first. After the big battle the gang had taken the remaining slayers and made the trek to Cleveland. As Giles had said, there is evil elsewhere to be fought and it was, as it had always been, their duty to fight it. So the gang had gone to where they knew another hellmouth would be ready and willing to give them trouble. The mission had seemed easy then: find evil, fight evil. But this afternoon wasn’t about the mission, it was about Willow. Kennedy had been planning this picnic in the park the whole week. She and Willow had been so busy setting up the new base of operations they had had no time for themselves. Well this afternoon was going to change that.

Kennedy had planned everything to the smallest detail. Making sure she had everything she needed packed and in the car, she ran upstairs to get her love.

“Hey baby, you…” but when Kennedy walked through the door the sight before her made her stomach fall to the floor. Willow was curled up in a ball in the corner of their bedroom rocking and murmuring to herself. “Willow, sweetie, what’s wrong?” Kennedy ran over to her girl. She reached out to touch her arm but Willow pulled away, frightened and shaking.

“No, don’t touch me!” she screamed. “Please don’t hurt me.”

“Willow, I would never…” Kennedy said, hurt in her voice as she pulled her hand away. “What’s wrong, what happened?”

Willow just continued to rock, holding herself even more tightly. “Come on, baby. Let’s get you into bed,” Kennedy said as soothingly as she could. She reached out tentatively to Willow, who this time let her guide her body into bed and under the covers. “There now, close your eyes and try to get some rest,” she said, leaning in to give Willow a small kiss.

As she leaned down Willow’s face rose to meet hers, but the eyes starring back at Kennedy were not the beautiful green ones she had stared into so many times before. They were bright blue and filled with fear………

Willow’s eyes began to flutter open. Her head ached and she felt like she had not slept at all that night. Stretching, she reached out to find the warm body she was so used to waking up beside. Finding the pillow beside her cold and empty frightened her. Oh god, she thought she’s gone, she left. Rolling over suddenly, she let out a sigh of relief to find her girl looking out the window, lost in thought.

“Hey beautiful,” she said smiling. “Penny for your thoughts?”

“What? Oh, you’re up. It’s nothing, just day dreaming. How do you feel this morning?”

“All headachy and icky. I think I need some medicine of the smoochy variety.”

“Oh yeah,” Kennedy said smiling and getting up to walk over to her lover. Leaning down she gave Willow a chaste kiss.

“Hey, is that all I get? That was hardly enough smoochies to make me feel better,” Willow pouted.

Kennedy could never resist that pouty lip. Leaning down, she gave Willow another kiss, but this time when she tried to rise Willow had a tight grip around her neck. “You can’t get off that easily buster,” she cooed, pulling Kennedy back down and giving her a passionate kiss. Kennedy got lost in Willow’s lips, deepening the kiss.

As they kissed the thoughts of the night before came back to Kennedy. She pulled away abruptly, leaving Willow slightly confused. “Hey, I was thinking of making pancakes.
Do you want some? They’re your favorite.” And with that Kennedy was out the bedroom door and walking toward the kitchen for breakfast making duty.

“That wasn’t really what I had in mind,” Willow answered, hurt by Kennedy’s distance.
