Make Me
by T. C. McGonigle

Buffy and the gang belong to Joss Whedon, Mutant Enemy and the WB. I'm only borrowing them for a while and mean no disrespect. REVISED.

Part Nine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spike dropped Willow's hands and calmly faced Xander. The boy straightened up, being stubbornly brave.

"The only bones I'll be breaking will be yours," Spike drawled. The boy's chin went up and his muscles tightened in fighting readiness. Angelus had been right, the lad was annoying.

"Spike," Willow's hand on his arm stayed any action on his part, "Xander, stop this. Where's Buffy?"

"She went to talk to Miss Quick."

"And why didn't you follow along? Angel calls you the Slayer's puppy dog," Spike put in his unwanted two cents. Xander glared at him. Willow glared at him.

"What's going on, Willow? You and Buffy are both acting weird."

"We can't stand around out here talking about it, let's go inside," Willow led them toward the back door of her house, "My parents are out with the Resnicks tonight."

"Wait a minute," Xander placed himself in front of the door, "You're inviting him into your home."

"Yes."

"Willow," Xander pulled Willow aside, "Remember what happened the last time you invited a vampire into your room. Ready made cat food."

"Of course I do, and I also remember how we uninvited him. Let's just get inside and I'll explain everything."

"Fine," Xander put up his hands in surrender, "But first tell me that Miss Quick is a bigger threat than Spike."

"She is."

"Okay. You don't need to explain, Willow, just let me in on the plan to get rid of her."

"I would," Willow sighed. She was glad that Xander was here to help, it meant that he believed and trusted her, "If we had one."

Buffy's mouth dropped open and she barely noticed Snyder pushing his way past her. Giles had Miss Quick cornered behind his desk with her arm twisted up behind her back.

"Mr. Giles, Miss Quick, what is going on here?" Snyder sputtered.

Melinda kept her eyes fixed on Buffy. She let her terror flow through them toward the girl. She let a small sob escape.

"Buffy, please help me," Melinda cried softly, "He's gone crazy with grief. He. . . he thinks I killed Jenny Calender."

"Shut up!" Giles shoved Melinda away from him, "Don't you dare to mention her name again. And don't you dare believe another word this woman has to say, Buffy!"

"Mr. Giles, I demand an explanation for your behavior! Manhandling a fellow staff member!" Snyder stepped forward, "Social interaction between teachers should be forbidden. It all started with teachers' lounges, one should never lounge while education the young. It leads to other things."

"Giles, are you okay?" Buffy ignored Snyder's tirade, "Maybe you should go home, you're upset. Miss Quick and I can handle the Willow/Spike thing."

"Buffy, can you hear what you are saying?" Giles stared with disbelief at his young charge, "As your watcher I order you to stay away from this woman. She's a monster."

"Miss Summers has a computer class tomorrow morning. She will be there," Snyder interjected.

"Of course I will," Buffy glared at the little man. As usual, he was not helping. Buffy took a few tentative steps toward Giles. Miss Quick cowered in the corner. "Giles, it's not Miss Quick's fault that Miss Calendar is dead. Someone had to teach the computer class. Willow did for a while and you never blamed her."

"Buffy, this has nothing to do with Jenny," Giles was beginning to realize how strong Melinda Quick's hold was on Buffy, "Melinda Quick is not a computers teacher."

"What are you talking about? Of course she's a computers teacher. I checked her references myself," Snyder frowned at Giles.

"Damn you, man! This has nothing to do with your petty bureaucracies," Giles ran a hand through his hair. It stood up on end, lending him a wild look that wasn't helping his credibility.

Melinda straightened up slowly. It was time for her to assume total control over the situation. "Principal Snyder, I think it would be best if I took Buffy home."

"Yes. Mr. Giles and I have to have a little talk," Snyder nodded in approval.

"No," Buffy protested, "I'm not leaving Giles."

"Buffy," Melinda skirted past Giles to stand beside Buffy, "You don't want to see him like this. . . . ."

"Buffy, please stay," Giles pleaded desperately, "Don't go anywhere with that woman."

"Miss Quick, please escort Miss Summers from the building. Mr. Giles is obviously having some sort of breakdown," Snyder ordered.

"Come on, Buffy," Melinda put a comforting arm around Buffy and led her out of the office, "When Giles is feeling better, he'll be grateful that you left and didn't see him in a worse state."

Giles sat down heavily in his desk chair. He guiltily watched Buffy leave with Melinda Quick. While distracted by grief he had let a monster walk into their midst. He had failed them all.
