Little Tidbits of “Needs to Know”:
1. Buffy and Angel have not seen each other once since Angel left Sunnydale
2. They never actually made the promise to never see one another again but the idea was mutual within each other
Hope this helps! Let me know if these things don’t! Oh, and the Italicized section is a flashback!

Prologue
“Hello, Angel,” she walked into his office, the dim light reflecting off her shimmering blond hair making it glitter and adding to its natural beauty. Her hypnotic hazel green eyes surveyed his trim figure dressed entirely in black with interest and some curiosity. He had not changed in the least since she had last seen him nearly a year ago but then… he should not have, right? After all… he was a vampire, even if a gypsy’s curse made him carry a soul for eternity in the spot where his once beating heart rest. His eyes were still as dark and deep as she remembered them being and still sent chills down her spine as they once had. His dark hair still had it’s wild yet tamed look to it that made him appear as if he had woke up, rolled out of bed, and went straight to work without touching it. No… he had not changed at all and the forbidden desire that drove her insane was still there, a burning tension between them.
“Buffy,” he stared at her with mild and apparent surprise. She looked absolutely stunning dressed in a multi-colored skirt, a white blouse, and little sexy strapped white sandals that accentuated her slender legs. Her beautiful face studied him carefully, several strands of blond hair framing her toned skin. He noted the way her lips were pressed together tightly and her brows knit together in a troubled sense. He remained seated, unsure of how to react or even move in front of her because he felt as though he was being judged severely for everything he was. “What are you doing here? I mean… not here but here in Los Angeles —”
“I’m visiting my father,” Buffy replied swiftly, while moving deeper into the core of his office. Both were well aware of his associates Wesley, Cordelia, Fred, Gunn, and Lorne watching them very closely through his office window.
“That’s nice…” Angel said, never removing his eyes from her hypnotizing face.
“I know…” she walked over to the windows, fingering the switch to close the blinds. “May I?”
“Go ahead.”
As the blinds slid shut silently, they heard the annoyed groans and sighs and both smiled despite themselves to one another. The next moment became an embarrassing one and they turned away from each other, tension looming heavily in the air. Angel coughed pointedly, deeply hoping to end the stress and hoping to hold a real conversation with the only woman he ever loved.
“So…” he started lamely.
“So…” she looked his way. Already this reunion after one year was not going too well. “A demon came to Sunnydale a couple months ago.”
“Really? How usual…” Angel strained to keep a normal tone and not sound sarcastic. He wanted to avoid the talking and grab her by the shoulders, kiss her deeply and passionately, and hope that she would realize just how deeply he wanted her… needed her… could never have her…
“Yes…” Buffy wandered around the perimeter of his office, running a hand mindlessly over the filled-to-the-brim bookcases. “He said he was looking for you.”
“And?” he stood up and leaned his back against the front of his desk, arms tightly crossed over his broad chest.
“He said he knew you right before he proceeded to do attempted murder on several high school girls…” she finished plainly.
“And you think I’m somehow connected to this?” he questioned.
“I never said that,” Buffy snapped defensively.
“No, but you did imply it.”
“No, I did not,” she glared at him angrily, her fist clenching loosely.
“Yes, you did when you said how he mentioned me right before attacking several high school girls,” Angel explained in a firm and irritated tone.
“That’s not what I meant!”
“Then what did you mean, Buffy?” he demanded almost coldly. Inside he smiled in admiration at her ferocity and beauty that built up in her pale eyes. Everything he ever loved radiated brilliantly with anger in front of him.
“I’m getting married!”
“Is that what you meant?” he asked, not fully hearing what she had said.
“Angel!” she cried out desperately, slamming her fist on his desk. “Didn’t you hear what I said?! I said I’m getting married! I’m getting married!”
“What?” he stared at her dumbfounded, every part of his entire being turned cold and he became numb to his very core. He eased himself down into his desk chair, not quite sure what to say or how to say it.
“He’s really nice,” Buffy looked away from him, a small smile glowing on her face as she thought of her fiancé. “I met him when I was in college. He’s sweet and gentle and wonderful and not—”
“A vampire,” Angel finished coolly, his eyes hardening some.
“That’s not what I was going to say,” she recognized him sulking and ignored the nagging voice in the back of her head that told her to wrap her arms around him and succumb to his every need.
“But that was precisely what you meant, though.”
“Oh, but, Angel, he’s practically perfect and a wonderful kisser—”
“I did not need to hear that,” he muttered to himself. “Buffy, congratulations, really. I hop you have a great wedding and I hope that you have a wonderful life. If you’re ever in Los Angeles, stop in and tell me how the married life is for you.”
She could tell by now that he had already shut himself off from her and the world and it angered her so much. But she was not done talking; she was going to make sure she said what she had come here to say.
“Angel, I’ve moved on in my life, I’m happy now,” Buffy told him gently, unwanted tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. “It’s time for you to move on, too.”
And with that she stormed out of Angel Investigations, slamming the front door as she went.
“Is it really good for him to go and anger a Vampire Slayer with him being a vampire and all?” Gunn asked from somewhere in the front lobby.
-----------------------------------------------
He dodged another bone-crushing blow to the head and without thinking too hard he buried a short stake into the heart of the vampire he had been fighting. It screamed fiendishly and turned to dust immediately. The dead vampire’s demon friend let out a low howl, whirled around on its clawed heel, and ran down the street as quickly as it could.
“I really hate demons,” Angel muttered to himself and disappeared into the shadows of the night after the escaping demon.
