Part Three

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Buffy's foot slammed into the mock vampire's face. She hadn't seen a real vampire in weeks, not since Angel. . . . Well, anyway, it was a good idea to keep up with her training.

"So, what are we going to do?" Xander wished that he had something to punch. Willow wasn't at home, she wasn't in the computer lab and it had been hours since she had run out of the library.

"Nothing," Buffy threw a jab to the dummy's midsection, "It's Willow's grief, she has to deal."

"I agree with Buffy," Cordelia interjected, "I don't see you banging down Giles' door to help him cry over Miss Calendar."

"Look, I don't care about that right now," Xander started to pace, "Nobody has seen Willow since she left here. That's what I care about."

"Why didn't you say that right away?" Buffy glared at Xander, "Why did you go on and on about Miss Calendar and Miss Quick?"

"Background information," Xander defended himself, "I'm thinking that we should stop with the friendliness toward Miss Quick for Willow's sake and Giles'."

"Okay," Buffy nodded, "We don't need another target for Angel anyway."

"I don't agree with Buffy," Cordelia stood up and crossed her arms over her chest, "I like Miss Quick, she has a keen sense of fashion and the more targets for Angel the better. That keeps him a whole extra person away from me. Oh, and you too, Xander."

"Thanks for the concern, Honeybunch," Xander ran a hand through his hair in frustration, "Let's figure this all out later and go find Willow now."

"I'm up for that suggestion," Buffy grabbed her jacket and headed for the door, "Cordy, if Giles ever leaves that office, tell him where we are." Buffy reached for the door and yanked it open. A disheveled Miss Quick falls through to the floor.

"They have her," Melinda gasped.

"Who has who?" Buffy helped the computer teacher up.

"Willow. This man. . . thing in a wheelchair took her. I tried to stop him, but he. . . I don't think he's human!" Melinda burst into tears. Buffy passed the distraught woman to Xander.

"I'm going after them. Where did you see them, Miss Quick?"

"I'm going with you," Xander pushed Miss Quick toward Cordelia.

"No," Melinda grabbed Buffy's arm, "It's too late. Willow is one of them."

"No!" Buffy and Xander both yell at the same time. Melinda's eyes widen in shock at their vehemence. Convincing them of Willow's betrayal would take all of her powers of persuasion.

"What's going on here?" Giles emerged from his office, slightly distracted.

"Miss Quick saw Spike kidnap Willow. Buffy and Xander want to go after them, but Miss Quick thinks he's vamped her already," Cordelia recapped for him when no one else volunteered.

"Willow? A vampire?" Giles suddenly became animated. He walked over and broke Miss Quick's hold on Buffy. "Did you see him do it? Did you watch him drain Willow and then force her to drink from him?"

"Well," Melinda stepped back. She was definitely going to have to change her tactics. She hadn't counted on a lot of involvement from the watcher, considering his loss. "No, I didn't see anything like that. He just took her."

"He'll take her back to the warehouse," Giles started ushering them out of the library.

Willow was running out of breath. She had to stop. She leaned against a wall to rest.

"Don't worry," Spike spun his chair around to face her, "She isn't following us. She has better ways to circumvent our interference."

"Okay, good," Willow couldn't take her eyes off of Spike. The whole situation felt like some surreal dream. "I'm going. You can get back to where ever you want to go by yourself now." Willow eased herself away from Spike.

"And just when we were getting to be such good friends," Spike's sarcastic drawl stopped her, "Sorry, Ducks, but if you will forgive the cliché, you can't go home again."

"Why not?"

"Melinda Quick is a Manipulator. Whatever story she has cooked up against us will have worked its magic by the time we get back."

Willow teetered on the edge of indecision. Spike was not the first person she would trust in any situation, she doubted very much that he would have been the last, in the real world. But tonight, Willow was all too aware that her real world took place on the Hellmouth and that the threat that Spike posed didn't seem as dangerous as Melinda Quick.

"Buffy and Xander wouldn't believe anything she told them about me. Especially if it was bad," Willow still protested. Despite what she had seen of Miss Quick's ability to ingratiate herself, she had to believe in her friends.

"And that's exactly why she won't tell them anything bad about you. I'm sure the bitch'll have plenty to say about me, though."

"But, I can tell them. . ."

"You won't get the chance, Ducks," Spike interrupted Willow. He was quite impressed that the young lass was still standing there beside him. "By the time they find us Melinda Quick will have filled their small brains so full of the horrors that I will have inflicted upon you that our little Slayer will be in stake first, ask questions later mode."

"I'm not certain that I care much about what happens to you anymore," Willow frowned. She didn't want to make this decision, she didn't want to trust or help Spike.

"Yes, but if you leave me to the tender mercies of that bit. . .your friend, the Slayer, then you are left to deal with the Manipulator all alone. I know how we can stop her."
