*****Epilogue*****
In the courtyard of Sunnydale high a stand with a microphone and rows of seats had been set up for the ceremony. The stand was decorated like the gym was for prom, ribbons in the school colours, and a few balloons. There was a maroon carpet running down the middle of the chairs and a large banner which read ‘Class of 1999’ across the stand.
‘So, you nervous?’ Cordy said as she elbowed Xander. He was sitting besides her fidgeting in his robes.
‘Not really, I’ve accepted defeat…if I have to do it…then I have to do it.’
‘Whatever.’
‘I just wish that Esme could be here to see it.’
‘Yeah, I guess. Must be nice to have someone to watch.’
They sat in silence staring at the stand as Snyder walked up to the microphone. Both wishing that their parents had bothered to turn up.
Two rows in front of them Willow and Oz sat hand in hand next to Buffy. Willow was silently wishing that her parents hadn’t turned up…it was going to be scary enough going up when her name was called anyway.
Buffy looked around as Snyder started his speech. Behind her she could see the section of seats reserved for parents. Giles and Joyce sat together on the front row. Both smiling at her, she smiled back, glad to have the support. As she stared back at Snyder she saw movement in the shadows of the school building.
Then a familiar face came as close to the sunny steps as she dared and waved. It was Esme, and behind her Eve and Eli. Cordelia and Xander had caught sight of them too. Esme blew a kiss at Xander and Eli gave Cordy a thumbs up. Then they stepped back further into the shadows to watch.
As Snyder finished his speech there was a unanimous sigh of relief from the students. Then he began calling their names, and one by one the students went to collect their slip of paper. Cordelia was amongst the first to go, she had aimed to make a small speech at the microphone, but Snyder shooed her out of the way and called the next name. She glared at him and a few people in the crowd laughed.
Xander strolled up onto the stage when his name was called, and pulled a face behind Snyder’s back, making a few people in the front row giggle. Buffy almost didn’t realize that Oz had been called when Snyder called for Daniel Osbourne. But as he reached the stand and shook hands with Snyder a few members of the crowd cheered for Oz and Buffy was sure she heard someone at the back scream out ‘Dingoes Ate My Baby!’
Willow crept up to the stage quite shyly, refused to shake hands with Snyder and blushed when she turned to face the crowd. Then Snyder called for Buffy.
‘Buffy Summers.’ He said, with what almost seemed like a snarl.
As Buffy got to her feet and walked down the maroon carpet she could feel everyone watching her, holding their breath, waiting for something bad to happen. There was a long moment of absolute silence as buffy climbed up to the stand and shook Snyders hand. The silence remained unbroken until she took the piece of paper in her hand. And then suddenly and overwhelmingly, as if it had been held back for years, the crowd cheered and whooped with joy.
Even the parents. People stood up in their seats and cheered, a few people whistled. Buffy smiled and new what she had to do. She pushed Snyder out of the way and stood in front of the microphone. Snyder made a move to stop her but found himself held back by a few students.
Buffy cleared her throat as the cheering died down a little and began to speak.
‘I didn’t plan on making a speech. But then let’s face it, no-one did…no-one thought that they’d make it this far in life. People like me aren’t meant to make it this far. But I did, and really it’s thanks to a lot of you.’ She looked directly at Xander and Willow.
‘We’ve been through so much in these last couple of years. Snakes in the cafeteria, mummies, zombies, vampires, demons… The list goes on. But we’ve also been through English, Math, Chemistry, History… Highschool.’ A few people nodded in agreement and a quiet chattering took over the crowd. ‘Whatever problems we’ve faced, natural or un-natural…alive or dead, we’ve won. I wanted to say thankyou at the Prom, but I was a little shell-shocked that most of you even knew who I was. But I guess it feels like that to all of us sometimes. Wherever life takes me from here, I’ll be glad to have spent these few years with all of you. Because together we lived through highschool and survived.’ Buffy stopped and stared out at the other students and parents.
Behind the student seats she saw Giles and Joyce rise from their seats and begin to clap slowly. A few parents around them joined in, and then the students in front of them. Even the few teachers on the stand joined. As she listened to the clapping she caught Giles’ eye, he smiled slightly and nodded his approval. She returned the smile and then stepped away from the microphone to join her friends.
Xander, Willow, Oz and Cordelia took her in a group hug. And for a while she felt happy. She knew what she’d achieved and what she’d been through to get it.
And the thought of going through it all with the people she loved made her smile.
