*****Chapter Two - Ending*****
As the evening drew on, the slow dances started. Buffy found herself alone again as her friends and their dates took to the floor. She stood by the punch bowl, watching the happy couples dancing.
Then she felt a familiar hand on her shoulder.
‘Buffy.’ Angel whispered from behind her, she turned to face him.
‘Angel…I thought you weren’t coming.’
‘I wouldn’t have missed this. You look beautiful.’
‘Thankyou.’ Angel took her arm and led her towards the dance floor.
‘Shall we?’ He asked, she nodded mutely and let him pull her close. Buffy closed her eyes and listened to the music, as all around her happier, more contented faces closed their eyes too.
I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all of my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
Because your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone
Buffy lifted her head and looked straight into Angel’s eyes, eyes that once seemed so warm and familiar.
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
‘Angel?’ She said in a whisper.
‘Yes?’
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
Tears began to fall down Buffy’s face as she realised what she was about to say.
‘Buffy…?’ Angel asked, using his thumb to wipe away the tears. Buffy pulled her face away from his hand.
You used to captivate me by your resonating light
But now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice it chased away all the sanity in me
These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase
‘I can’t do this anymore Angel.’ Buffy whispered through her tears. ‘I can’t be with you like this, knowing that any second I could lose you and...’
‘You’ll never lose me.’
‘That’s the whole point…how could I ever lose you if I’ve never had you in the first place.’
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
Angels face changed, he seemed to withdraw any emotion from it, and his eyes seemed far away. Further away from Buffy than she’d ever seen before.
‘I don’t know who you are anymore Angel, and I don’t think I want to know. We’ve been through so much…I thought we could survive, but I was wrong.’ Buffy pulled out of his arms and took a step back. ‘This is killing me right now, but I know it’s the right thing to do...I know we’ll both get over this’ She took a long pause. ‘I think we should break up.’
Angel stared directly at her, but it seemed he was looking through her. His face never changed. He just turned on his heel and walked out. Buffy was left standing in the middle of the dancefloor, alone, and wondering what to do next.
I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
And though you're still with me
I've been alone all along
Buffy turned to watch her friends, oblivious in their dancing and then left.
when you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I've held your hand through all of these years
But you still have all of me
Prom night was over.
**********
The early morning sun rippled in through Buffy’s window. She stirred and looked around the room. Everything was the same, as if nothing had changed. But it had, everything had changed. The Prom was supposed to be a right of passage…a time for change. But it was a different kind of change that Buffy had made.
She dragged herself out of bed and wandered downstairs. She was surprised to find Willow sitting in the kitchen waiting for her.
‘Will?’ She asked blearily.
‘Buffy…the most amazing thing happened…well, I mean, probably not so amazing for you…maybe not even amazing for Oz, cuz, y’know…done it before and stuff…’
‘Will?’
‘Sorry…I’m just excited…cuz Oz and I, after prom, we went back to his place…and, well…we…’ Willow faded out as a deep blush covered her entire face. ‘Kind of a sucker for tradition…y’know, Prom night and everything.’ She smiled.
Buffy sighed and then smiled at Willow, giving her a hug.
‘I’m happy for you.’ She said.
‘You’re the first person I told.’ Willow said excitedly, pouring herself a glass of orange juice. ‘So, where’d you and Angel get to last night then huh?’
‘Me and Angel? We’re…I mean I…well, we broke up.’ She said; trying not to cry as her tongue tripped over her words.
‘Oh Buffy! I’m sorry!’ Willow said, grabbing her and squeezing her tightly.
‘It’s ok, it was my decision.’ Buffy said as she started to cry on Willow’s shoulder. ‘Doesn’t seem to make it hurt any less though.’
Willow gently rocked her back and forth as she sobbed.

The atmosphere at school over the next few days was excited but subdued. It seemed almost too good to be true to some students that they’d be Graduating in one piece.
As Buffy, Xander, Willow and Cordelia strolled down the corridor they felt as if they were being watched. Everyone was smiling at them, and some people waved.
‘I could get used to this.’ Cordy smiled. ‘Hey, are we gonna bother with fourth period?’
‘I highly doubt that…as important as a game of charades is to our future college lives, I think we can skip it just this once.’ Xander said.
‘Hey guys, what’s up?’ Oz asked as he joined them. He slipped his arm around Willow’s waist and she smiled shyly.
‘Just debating the pro’s and con’s of the art of mime.’ Xander said. Buffy stayed quiet until they reached their destination.
‘Oh God Willow, this is so gonna clash with your hair.’ Cordy said with a smile as she picked up her maroon graduation robes.
‘Definitely not the classiest of colours.’ Oz added as he collected his, eyeing it suspiciously.
Buffy took hers in silence and walked off in the direction of the library.
‘Hey Buff…’ Xander was cut short by a punch on the arm and a meaningful look from Willow.
**********
As she entered the library Giles looked up from his pile of books.
‘Ah, Buffy…’ He stopped as he saw the expression on her face. ‘Buffy? Are you alright?’
Buffy stopped and dropped her robes and books on the table. Giles glanced at them.
‘Surely the colour isn’t so bad….’ But before he could finish Buffy burst into tears.
‘It’s over Giles…I couldn’t take it anymore.’
‘Over? What’s over?’ He said as he placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
‘I’m supposed to be the strongest person in the world Giles, and I couldn’t handle it!’ Buffy’s voice cracked as her sobbing grew louder.
‘Buffy…’ Realisation dawned on Giles. His fatherly instinct took over and he took her into a tight hug. ‘Oh Buffy, I’m so sorry.’ He said as she cried into his shoulder. ‘I’m so sorry.’
