“Conner? That’s a weird name.” Dawn commented. “Are you weird?”
“I...I don’t think so.” Conner said. He was almost lying. True, his dad was a vampire and he had super powers, but that made him special, not weird...right?
“Oh.” She said, examining him. “Why are you here?”
She was very close to him now, almost studying him. Up close she was very pretty. Conner shook his head. Focus! “Angel sent me. He wanted me to check in and make sure you got here okay. You know, that stuff. No one answered the door, so I kinda came in myself.”
“You’re not a vampire then.” Dawn commented.
“No, I guess I’m not.” Conner agreed.
“Oh! That’s what that banging was.” Spike exclaimed behind her.
“You two are really out of it, aren’t you?” Conner said, almost laughing at them.
“I think so. Do you feel out Spike?” Dawn asked.
“Nah. But if we are...” He seemed to lose his train of thought. “...don’t poke me. Okay?”
“Okay.” She agreed. “But then you can’t grab my finger!”
“Fine, I don’t want to grab your stupid finger anyways.”
“Fine!”
“Fine!”
“Not that you could, even if you did want to.”
“I could so grab your bloody finger!”
“Prove it.” Dawn challenged.
Conner watched, half amused, half alert in case they accidently hurt each other. Spike, as far as he knew, had super strength from being a vampire.
Spike once again playfully tackled Dawn and pinned her, victoriously snatching her finger.
“Hey, come on now!” Conner said, fearfully pulling him off of the girl. He had completely knocked her down!
“Hey!” Dawn exclaimed, her giggles abruptly stopping. “What are you doing?”
“He could have hurt you.” Conner explained.
“Spike could never hurt me, even drunk. Which I think we are.” Dawn told him, pulling herself up a second time. “He’s my protector. He has been since...for a really long time. Since Glory, I think.”
“Glory?” Conner questioned.
“A god. Es. Goddess. She tried to kill me once.” Dawn told him.
Conner, surprised at himself, felt a sudden surge of anger at the thought of someone trying to kill this beautiful creature.
Across from him, Spike appeared equally mad.
“We put a right end to that.” He fumed. “No one will hurt this girl. Not with me still alive. Well, sorta. You know what I mean!”
“See, my protector.” Dawn said.
That’s when she passed out.
A few minutes later, Spike did too.
Dawn opened her eyes the next morning with a slamming headache.
“Oh my god.” She whispered, rubbing her head. She sat up.
She was in a bed. Looking around, she remembered she was in Spike’s apartment, and sat bolt right up. What had happened? She could hardly remember a thing!
Scanning the room, she spotted Spike on the couch, a blanket wrapped around him. Dawn heard a sound coming from the kitchen and strained her ears. What was that sound? Was someone...cooking?
She slowly heaved herself up and headed cautiously toward the kitchen area, which was just around the wall, stumbling slightly and leaning against the wall for support.
The bright florescent light hurt her eyes, and she had to put a hand over them and squint. Someone was in front of her. A boy, she guessed. He seemed to realize she was there.
“How you feeling?” He asked.
Dawn blinked up. “W-Who are you?”
“I’m Conner, remember? We met last night. You two were pretty wasted.” The boy replied, helping Dawn into a chair at the table.
“Last night...last night?!” Dawn nearly sprang out of her chair. “Oh my god, did anything...?”
“No, no, you guys didn’t do anything. Well, at least not AFTER I got here. I can’t vouch for before, but you two seemed okay. No one was hurt anyway.” Conner said, putting a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to calm her down.
“What’s that smell?” Dawn asked, wrinkling her nose.
“Oh, shoot!” Conner said, turning back to a pan on the stove. A black circle, which was once a pancake, now lay on the pan. He dumped it out and poured more batter on. “Burnt that one, oh well. I’m making pancakes. I thought you’d be hungry, and I didn’t know what you liked, but I didn’t want to wake you up, so I made the only thing I knew how to.”
“Oh.” She replied. He was cute when he rambled. Then her eyes widened. “I remember you now! Angel sent you!”
“Yep, that was me.” Conner nodded.
“You didn’t tell him, did you?” Dawn asked worriedly. Her eyes grew even wider.
“That you were completely drunk? No.” Conner said. “I told him you guys were fine, asleep in fact. He thinks I went home.”
“Oh thank you!” Dawn sighed, getting up and hugging him.
Conner awkwardly stood for a moment. She was obviously a very friendly person.
When she pulled back there was a strained silence between the two. Dawn looked hesitantly at the floor, and Conner quickly flipped his pancake before it burnt again.
“So, you don’t look old enough to drink to me.” He said breaking the ice.
Dawn pushed herself up on the counter next to the stove.
“I’m not.” She said sheepishly.
“So what was the occasion again? Lost love?” Conner laughed.
“Yeah, something like that. Grieving, I guess.”
“Grieving and drinking.”
“Grieving and drinking!”
Conner smiled and Dawn smiled back.
She had a great smile.
He had an adorable smile.
“Who the bloody hell are you?” Spike asked from the doorway. He squinted at the light, just like Dawn had.
“He’s Conner, the boy from last night. He stayed to make sure we’d be okay.” Dawn replied.
“Bugger! Did he tell anyone?”
“No, I didn’t, promise.” Conner answered for her.
“Oh. Well then, what’s for breakfast? I smell something cooking!”
