Chapter 2 - Here

You always remember your first kiss; the first time someone pushed their lips feverishly against your own. You always remember the first boyfriend who squeezed your hand and told you you were beautiful; the first time your heart was trampled, and the worried, confused aftermath of piecing your life back together. Unforgettable moments of grief, pride and passion when overwhelming feelings just pass over you and you can't move, you can't breathe for fear of losing the moment, losing the guy, losing your mind.

The first guy she had ever loved sat in a bar, his face turned into the gathering crowd; waiting for someone, maybe even waiting for a woman. Maybe even waiting for her to come back. He used to love that he was able to sense her closeness, but now he sensed nothing, Just the emptyness that had engulfed him since she'd left. He had been the first to tell her she was beautiful, the first real boyfriend she'd ever had, she gave him her life, her soul, her virginity; because with him, when they kissed, when they held one another, there was nothing else, and Dawn both loved and hated that feeling in the same instant. She had given him everything and taken back everything in the same breath. She hated him, she'd kill him if she could, if she was strong enough to, but with the same passion she hated him, she loved him; more than she'd loved Buffy, her Mom, he fascinated and infatuated her but she had dominated him in a way no one else ever let her; she was closer to him than she had ever been to another being and she needed him more than she was prepared to admit.

Angel was the first to see her, walking through the hotel door, biting her lip, not really much of a vampire but not really much of little Dawny either. He hated her for what she had done; run away when things got rough, gotten vamped and fallen in love with him, Buffy's killer and his son; Connor. He had always thought she was mentally stronger than that, but he'd broken her, after he got himself vamped and ran away too and the little shadow of a sister who had always seemed so strong and controlled, just seemed like a little girl again.

She stood infront of him and he looked at her with those big, cold, hurt eyes. Connor's eyes. But he wasn't Connor. He wasn't anyone really, not to Dawn, he was Buffy's escape and now she was gone. For good this time. No more spells to bring her back, no more pain and no more families...No more Buffy. Just Dawn, the shadow that was her little sister, the shadow that whined and cried even when she felt nothing. "Dawn."

He'd searched for her all this time. They all had, Buffy's friends. Dawn didn't have friends anymore; except from him; friends just bring you pain. Friends just steal things - sometimes even your heart - and disappear. All that time she just had herself, living it up, being allowed to experience who she really was... and then she found she had something more. Her Solace. Her Escape, and she so wanted it to be right. He owned her. He looked after her like she was his pet and it suited her for a very long time. It suited her because for all his stupid, ignorant stunts, She loved him, she loved escaping and finding solace in the colourful, ever mysterious world of Angelus' son.

Dawn looked at him again, biting her lip and waiting for the tears and the memories to consume her. She didn't know who she was anymore. All of that, all of that talk and all of that running and living and experiencing led her to one thing; She was always meant to be in the shadows. She was always meant to not go noticed, thats why she was the key so long ago and thats why she found escaping so hard until Connor finally found her. "Hello Angel."

She ran to him and folded herself in his arms, not quite knowing what else to do.

Spike and Faith emerged, and on seeing the sight which beheld them, Spike put out his arm to stop Faith moving any closer. He knew how angry she was; at Angel, at Dawn, but mostly at Connor and at Buffy who had let him deflate her and who had let him win, He sensed how the nostalgia of seeing her again after so long was changing her mentally. She tensed under his hand and let out a short sigh. "Hiya Dawn. Long time no see." She plastered a fake smile on her face and removed Spike's hand from her arm.

-----

As the scoobies gathered, Faith and Angel trying to pretend everything was OK and Willow and Spike really feeling the hole within their hearts significantly lessen, Xander stood back from the group, hurting, angry that she had been forgotten so fast.
