We stood in a kind of awkwardness for a little while after the third guy left to get me my drink. The dark haired guy told me his name was Angel, and the guy who’d gone to the bar was David. I’d already been introduced to Spike.
I leant against the wall between them both. “So how come I haven’t seen you guys round here before?”
Spike snorted. “Sunnydale? You really think this is our kind of town pet?”
Angel frowned at him. “That’s not the right way to talk to the ladies Spike. Learn some manners.” He turned back to me. “We’re just visiting for a couple of weeks. We live in L.A and my grandparents have, well, had a house here.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Cryptic much?”
He laughed. “Sorry, I should explain. It’s quite simple really. They-”
David walked back and interrupted, stopping him. He looked a little relieved. I rolled my eyes.
“What’d you get me David?”
He looked completely serious. “Blood.”
I stared at him like he was crazy. “Is that meant to be funny?”
He shrugged. “If you want it to be.”
I took the drink, sniffed it before I drank. Cranberry juice. Great. What a delightful treat! In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m being sarcastic.
But that stuff was weird. It tasted…different. I didn’t know why or how, but it definitely did. I get it now though. I get it now, when it’s too late.
Spike took my half-finished drink from me and plonked it on a table. “Do you want to dance now pet?”
“Uh, yeah…ok.”
He took my hand, squeezing too tightly, and forced me to dance pressed up against him. He had his hands on my hips, my butt, my chest, my stomach, shifting all over me. It was horrible! It made me feel sick and slimy and wrong.
I whimpered something, asked him to let me go but he ignored me. A little while later, I started to feel really weird. Dizzy, sick. Noises muffled, vision blurred. I was struggling to move, then I was fighting for air. I tried to tell him something was wrong, but there was still no response.
I threw up on him and passed out.
When I came to, the music had stopped. The crowd were silent. Everything had come to a standstill. All because of me.
They were all standing there watching me. Everyone.
Xander had his hands on my shoulders, lightly, just to keep me from trying to sit up. He looked concerned. Willow was sitting there in tears. Even Cordelia looked worried. Oz nearly had an expression!
An adult I vaguely decided was the bartender was standing there too. “Come with me.” He ordered.
We went to a backroom: me, him, Cordy, Oz, Xander and Will. “How much have you had?”
I shook my head. “Nothing. A cranberry juice. I swear.”
“That’s it?”
I nodded.
“Did you leave it anywhere? Where something could have happened to it?”
“No, one of the guys bought it for me and I only had half before we dumped it somewhere.”
Xander tensed up. “They drugged your drink! The bastards! They put something in your drink!” He leapt to his feet and stormed back out there.
Willow screamed. “Xander no!”
Too late. He stomped right up to them and hit Spike so hard his head snapped back. He was yelling at them, cursing them. Then they were on him. Kicking, hitting. He went down hard and they followed, stamping and vicious.
Cordelia was terrified. I never saw her so scared. It was awful.
Oz ran out to try and help. His band mates pushed into the fray to try and save him. It was mayhem. Punches flying all over. Guys thrown round the place, hitting walls and windows. And so much blood.
The police sorted everything out eventually. Xander and Oz loaded into an ambulance with me, to check there wasn’t anything left in my system.
As I walked out with the paramedics, I spotted David standing there in the shadows. Totally unharmed. He leant forward so he could whisper to me.
“Now you’ve seen the true meaning of chaos. The real aftermath. Like it? You’re gonna cause it one day. Til then, we’ll follow you. We will win. I promise.”
