Sophie was curled up on the bed next to Adam, nestled into him like a squirrel hibernating.

Adam was gradually coming back to consciousness; he was twitching, his eyes were flickering and fluttering and his breathing was switching from sleep mode to resting mode, a minor difference, but it was just noticeable.

Sophie held his hand tightly. It was an unconscious gesture of reassurance, for both of them. It was to keep Adam from freaking out when he came round and to comfort her self with the knowledge that she wasn’t alone, however much it felt like it.

Suddenly, he was awake. His eyes were wide open and he was looking straight at Sophie. He squeezed her hand comfortingly.

“Adam! Oh thank the God of Pigs you’re all right!” Sophie burst into tears as she hugged him. “I was so worried!”

Adam was groggy and disorientated. He was like a lost zombie. That was normal. He passed out on a far-too-regular-for-anyone’s-liking basis. Sometimes he had fits too. He’d been subjected to numerous painful, embarrassing and frankly ridiculous medical tests and all results had either been negative or inconclusive. Physically, he was fine; fighting fit even, thanks to all the training he’d been putting in with his private kickboxing instructor.

He smiled wearily, but the smile didn’t quite reach his dull, tired eyes that looked almost bereft of life. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you.”

Sophie bravely tried to smile back. She managed a weird mix between a sad, teary face and a false, sweet smile. It was more than slightly creepy. “Oh, no, it’s fine!” She lied awkwardly.

It was obvious to both of them that she was lying. Even she didn’t believe it. She wasn’t sure why she even bothered lying when they were both so sure she wasn’t ok, at all. “Are you ok?”

He slowly tried to sit up, gingerly testing himself, well used and readily prepared for the heavy, wearily aching body. “Uh, yeah. Thanks. How long was I out?”

“Long enough.” She turned away slightly, unsure if she wanted him to see her face while she made her confessions. He watched her with interest and worry as she worked up the courage to speak again. “Listen…I kind of had to do something I’m not proud of.”

Sophie had some weird thing about facing Adam. She hated admitting the truth to him, especially if it was something important and liable to hurt one or both of them. She feared him. Well…no, she didn’t exactly fear him. He was one of her best friends. She feared his judgement, his criticism, his opinions. He was strong-minded and strong-willed. If there was something he wanted to say, he went right ahead and said it. Nothing got past him without him saying his piece about it.

“You used your powers.” He stated, quietly. There was no emotion in his voice, nor was there emotion in his face as Sophie turned back to him.

Sophie took his other hand, looked him straight in the eyes. “I had to. You’d passed out, Tamzin was making so much noise…you knocked a guy out Adam. I had to save us. I was scared.”

Adam nodded, still not committing to an emotion. “So you…?”

“I froze the area and orbed us out.”

Sophie was a Charmed One…or a relation of a Charmed One…or a descendant of the Charmed Ones…something like that. No one was very sure. Sophie had been told about it when she was very young. She’d grown up learning and developing her powers, yet had never really known where they came from and was quite sure she never would. Sophie could freeze time in a specific area with just a hand gesture. She could move things with her mind just by concentrating. She could move from place to place with all the ease of breathing. Sophie was determined that she would somehow acquire more powers as time passed. She didn’t even know if that was possible, but she was determined she’d do it. When Sophie set her mind to something, she was not to be distracted or put off, and heaven forbid if she failed!

Adam was suddenly curious. He quirked an eyebrow. “And we would now be…where?”

Tamzin swayed on her way in, staggering over to flop between them on the king-size bed. “Your house. Your room. Me hurty.”

Sophie gave her a swift hug, swooping in on her unexpectedly, but soothingly. “I know Tam. It’ll be ok. Don’t worry.” She was so sympathetic in times of need. Most of the time, there were no times of need. Times of need were rare. That was a very good thing.

“Tamzin, what happened to you?” Adam asked after a long pause.

“Well…there was pain and screaming and crying and now.” Tamzin answered in a soft gabble.

Sophie laughed. “That was a good answer. Adam’s started to rub off on you after all those years!”

Adam looked instinctively offended immediately. “Hey! Adam does not ‘rub off’ like some kind of stain. Adam is a state of being, a perfect state of being!”

Tamzin tilted her head to the side, like a dog listening. “It makes me feel a bit like a mushroom, actually.”

The others gave her the ‘explain in English’ look. It was a look Tamzin was well used to. It seemed every other sentence she said confused them or made no sense to them.

“Things are always so much simpler in my head.” She sighed with a wistful expression on her pale face. “Sophie said how Adam had rubbed off on me and…I don’t know. It kind of made me feel like I was some kind of mushroom, soaking up the flavour of…ok, yuck! I am not finishing that sentence. Ever!”

Sophie stopped laughing for long enough to answer the phone. Neither of the others had even noticed it ringing because they were so absorbed in the fun of the moment.
Adam nudged Tamzin, gesturing urgently for her to be quiet so they could hear Sophie’s conversation.

“What? Who are you? Uh…ok.” She held the telephone out at arm’s length. “Tamzin, it’s for you.”
