“I just don’t feel I know where I’m going, who I am. Like I’ve lost a part of me, somewhere, somehow. Oh! I don’t know!” Buffy groaned as she sunk into a chair at the Magic Box.

“Well Buffy, why do you feel this way? It seems to me you’ve mentally regressed to compensate for your rigorous timetable, with no thought to repose.”

“What?! Giles please! My brain and body are too tired to try to figure out what you just said.” She laid her arms on the table and threw her head onto them. “Fire bad, tree pretty.”

“How’s this? Your tired and over doing it. You should get some rest and relax a little.” Giles said with empathy.

“Hey! Vacation! I’m liking the sound of this! Let’s see. Disneyland is probably going to sound great to Dawn, we could even take Willow, Tara, Xander, and Anya! Hey Giles, you wanna go to-“

“No Buffy, not that kind of ‘vacation’, I’m thinking that a little soul searching would clear this right up!” The British Watcher smiled cheerfully.

“Desert. 110 degrees in the daytime, freezing at night. Right, just what I had in mind.” The slayer mocked as she rolled her eyes.

“Trust me Buffy, this will help clear your mind, body and soul. You’ll feel like a whole new person when you get back, trust me!” The look in his eyes told her that she wasn’t getting out of this.

“Can I have a pillow or a blanket this time?” Buffy whined.

“Nope!” Giles chirped happily. “Because the whole purpose of this quest is to-“

Cutting in, Buffy finished his sentence. “Find one’s self, and to suffer while doing it.” She added that last part for Giles’ sake, because she truly believed he didn’t understand just how cold it got at night in the desert.

“Now Buffy! How many times must we go through this?”

“Zero more times Giles. I’ll go. You won’t hear anymore complaints from me.”

“Soul searching, huh Slayer? Sounds like a load of crap, cause I’ve never done it and I feel fine!” Spike pouted.

“I’m pretty sure you have to have a soul to search for it.”

“Listen. I’ve got a better idea. Tell Giles and everybody your going and you will, just not alone.” Spike emphasized ‘alone’ with a raised eyebrow while biting his lower lip. “I can come with you if you want.”

“Yeah! Sounds great! Well have a blast tonight, but tomorrow it will be 110 degrees by nine in the morning. When the beautiful sun is beating down on me and my big pile of dust, we’ll have second thoughts, I’m sure.”

“Yeah. That would suck.”

“But I’ll come and visit you when I get back.” Buffy walked to Spike and soundly kissed him on the lips. “Promise.”
