Reviews for Walking in Fear

filmtheory 04/04/05 - 12:35PM 4: Three Signed
This was another wonderful chapter in a great story. Dawn going to see Spike to find out what a soul “feels like” was touching and heartbreaking. It was reminiscent of Buffy going to Spike about the death of slayers in “Fool for Love.” The segment on the bus to L.A. said a lot about Dawn’s character and really put this story into perspective as a coming of age tale. Dawn has left behind the petty pleasure of bugging her sister and moved onto an existential quest. The club scene was excellent and, to quote my favorite Angel character, “at times inappropriately erotic.” The vampire dragging Dawn back to his table and feeding on her was well written. The sequence was extremely sexy despite being essentially a metaphor for a sexual assault. Dawn’s reaction shows she may really be in over her head and descending into a world from which she might not be able to return.

Author's Response: I must admit, your reviews are very well written. Thank you very much for your analysis; it lets me know that the scenes are having the proper effect. I'm glad you like the story so far.

The story is still very visual. Buffy’s concern for Dawn is touching. I liked her description of heaven. It was a nice moment between the sisters. Hopefully Dawn will get to go to the heaven Buffy described.

Great chapter! You did a great job setting up a metaphysical dilemma for Dawn. While she was a bit of a brat on the show, her current predicament with regard to her soul is enough to make her a very complex, intriguing, and adult character. In fact, she’s dealing with an issue more philosophical than any other character on the show has: Am I real? Where did I come from? And what happens to me when I die? Science fiction is a genre perfectly designed to disguise common issues and problems as being supernatural. However, Dawn’s questions are the same that any sentient being has. Where did I come from? And what will become of me when I die? This was a brilliant concept and your writing has done it justice. I can’t wait to see where the story goes.

Author's Response: Thank you, very much. I am glad the questions were evident, I was disappointed by the way Dawn was portrayed in the sixth season and wanted to add some complexity to her position.

Great prologue. You’re really talented! Your writing is extremely poetic and captivating. You stuck that perfect balance between giving us enough information to get our interest and withholding enough information to keep our interest. Great job.

Damn! (Sorry. Involuntary exclamation.) The whole thing was GREAT. I loved the way it was Dawn-centric, and the fact that she didn't look like a fool for doing it (a lot of people paint season six Dawn as pretty much a brat in the background. Not everybody, but a lot of them.) Very tense, very Joss-like..... But I'm curious; the summary said post-Life Serial..... So, then, how is Anya a Vengeance Demon again, and how does Spike have a soul??? Apart from those, I loved the whole thing.

Author's Response: Thank you. Damn! (Yeah, I get the involuntary thing) Sorry about the inconsitencies. The story was orginally set in the seventh season, in which Dawn was less annoying, Spike had a soul, but to solve some other plot problems I had to change the season. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find a space where all the characters are present and not evil / insane. Thank you for your praise.

Nice take on Dawnie and her quest! I haven't seen this sort of plot device yet. Keep it up. I'm hooked.

That was pretty deep. Good work.

Author's Response: Thank you, very much. I love incorportating the surreal into peoples' thoughts, expecially when the subject calls for it.

Once again, brilliant. I think you've captured each of the characters perfectly. Especially Xander :) Superb.

Author's Response: Thanks, Xander is quite the bag of fun. I am hoping to work Anya into an intermission, considering this thing is turning into a novel.
