Again, you really show a particular talent for getting inside of Dawn’s head and making me feel sorry for her. Anyone can do that by changing the character. You do it by showing us the pain locked inside her. She was someone who was neglected and abandoned, even more so than Buffy. How could that not hurt? I feel like an idiot for not noticing. Luckily, I have you to explain it to me. Of course, you’re not just about explaining what others have written. You’re squeezing Hank’s return for every single once of tension and conflict you can get. And a great deal of it is inside Hank himself. His attitude toward Spike is perfect. He doesn’t trust Spike, but Spike’s the only one communicating with (read: yelling at) Hank. Therefore Spike is the most reliable source of information about Hank’s family by default. It’s a complex situation and classic Buffy: the mundane magnified by the supernatural.
Author's Response: I can't say anything like "I was Dawn" but I do get her and I always liked her, even when she was being annoying. I think the problem with Dawn was that she had some truely annoying things to say (get out, get out, GET OUT springs to mind) that made her harder to sympathize with.
I like the idea of Spike being the one to bridge the gap between Hank and the others...considering how he was often pushed to the side during season 5 and 6 byt the other characters, I get a perverse pleasure out of it *eg* |
