"Hank came back…could that mean that even when they left they didn’t always stay gone?" Nice job tying Hank to Angel in Buffy's mind. It's not a parallel I would have thought of, but it seems so natural. Speaking of Hank/ Angel parallels, I love the way Hank thinks he'll get his wayward girls back. Spike's reaction to Hank being back was pretty funny. It's interesting that someone who seemed to relish his roll of abusive lover would react like this. It creates a lot of interesting questions about the character (in a good way). Was he doing it because of his previously stated affection for Joyce? He's also pretty protective of the Bit. Is he protective of Buffy as well or perhaps jealous of someone who'd also mentally scarred Buffy. In the end, I think Hank's abandonment did a lot to screw up Buffy, particularly with men. And Spike has been one of the major beneficiary of the scars Hank has created. I love the emotional complexity you've developed. This is what BtVS was all about. take somewhat common problems and frame them within a supernatural life and death scenario. Excellent!
Author's Response: Thanks for another review!
I always saw Buffy as the girl who was left by all the important men in her life. First her father, then Angel, and finally Riley. Now she gets to the guy who's the least likely to leave and she won't open up. I swore to myself that this story wouldn't end up Spuffy, and it's a promise I intend to keep, but I also can't write Spike the way Marti Noxon did (eg using him for her own catharsis and therapy and changing the character in the process). The only road block I've come up against is that season 6 had a lot of Spuffy stuff in it. Hopefully I can make it work. I think Spike truely cares for all of the Summers' women and will try to help them. Through all of his and Joyce's chats (off screen ones...*g*) one would think the ex-husband would come up again *g*
Hank coming home would give Buffy hope, since he was the first to start the chain of leaving. I also wanted to show his complete inexperience with being a father to older girls. In the season 2 premire he tried to get Buffy to open up by buying her things, so I'm going to run with that trait as one of the few cannon things we know about Hank. |

Another great chapter. I imagine that in the show, if Hank really did return, Spike would've pulled a move like that.
Author's Response: Thanks! Yeah, I imagine he would have had a hard time keeping his temper in check. |
