Great fic - it's refreshing to see Hank written as a real person with good points as well as bad. Loving the tension - as Hank, Giles and Spike all have some level of paternal instinct towards Buffy and Dawn, will be interesting to see how they all get on with each other.
Author's Response: Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying it. I just wanted to write something where Hank wasn't easily forgiven or made out to be the evilest of the evil. |

Hm. By this point, it's almost harder to be disappointed in Hank because he's pretty much grown--or tried to grow--as a father figure. It'd be fun if he, Giles, and Spike all yelled at each other, though.... (That's me rambling. Not helpful ideas. Sorry.) Anyway, great chapter again--including, of course, the "bloomin--flowerin onion blossom". ;)
Author's Response: "By this point, it's almost harder to be disappointed in Hank because he's pretty much grown--or tried to grow--as a father figure."
Hee! That's what I was going for! So glad that got through :) |

So did I. Thanks for reminding us once again that Hank is out of the loop in more ways than one. Ironically, having a parent around (and one who’s trying to bond with her at that) continues to make me more sympathetic toward Dawn. I love hard luck cases that other people think are annoying (e.g. my favorite character: Connor), yet some how always labeled her as brat. You do a better job writing Dawn as angst-ridden teenager (with whom I can sympathize) than Joss and company ever did. Then again, the story is being told increasingly through Dawn’s eyes, thereby making her automatically more sympathetic. Don’t’ get me wrong, I think Dawn’s is the perfect POV. She is the one person currently entrenched in both the regular and supernatural worlds. Again, I love this concept. It’s completely brilliant. But the concept alone isn’t what makes this story great. Your writing, both in terms of plot and characterization is fabulous. Thus your 19th unanimously 5-star review. PS neck massager from Willow- don’t think I missed that you dirty-minded girl.
Author's Response: "PS neck massager from Willow- don’t think I missed that you dirty-minded girl."
Hee! That's one of my favorite moments in "Older and Far Away"...Buffy gets the neck massager, she and Spike instantly think sex toy...heeheehee :)
I've always liked Dawn, adn I've found on re-viewing that I really like her. She can be annoying, but then most teens are (as I coach teens I feel qualified to make that statement ;) ).
Again, calling my story brilliant never gets old! Thanks! :) |

Very nice--Spike is still the Big Bad when he wants to be, though it's still kind of tainted with affection for the two Summers girls.... Anyway, liked the "bonding" between Hank and Spike. It's to the point where you want to feel sorry for both of them (or, at least, I do), but you can't--because you (again, I) know what happened in the past, and what "was supposed to" happen in the future. So, either way, (if that made any kind of sense), very nice--another great chapter.
Author's Response: Thanks! I'm so glad that they're both sympathetic yet difficult to sympathize with. Definately made sense to me! :) |

It's interesting that you made the connection between all of Buffy's boyfriends leaving and her father leaving, something that I've never really seen established before. And also, I like the way Dawn eased the tension with Spike and Riley. I'm so accustomed to seeing S6 Dawn be a pissy brat. Nice to see her in a good light.
Author's Response: Thanks! Yeah, I like reading a more mature Dawn in fic, and I enjoyed MoreMature!Dawn in S7 of btvs, so I'm determined to make her more sympathetic. I'm glad your liking her :) |

Again, you really show a particular talent for getting inside of Dawn’s head and making me feel sorry for her. Anyone can do that by changing the character. You do it by showing us the pain locked inside her. She was someone who was neglected and abandoned, even more so than Buffy. How could that not hurt? I feel like an idiot for not noticing. Luckily, I have you to explain it to me. Of course, you’re not just about explaining what others have written. You’re squeezing Hank’s return for every single once of tension and conflict you can get. And a great deal of it is inside Hank himself. His attitude toward Spike is perfect. He doesn’t trust Spike, but Spike’s the only one communicating with (read: yelling at) Hank. Therefore Spike is the most reliable source of information about Hank’s family by default. It’s a complex situation and classic Buffy: the mundane magnified by the supernatural.
Author's Response: I can't say anything like "I was Dawn" but I do get her and I always liked her, even when she was being annoying. I think the problem with Dawn was that she had some truely annoying things to say (get out, get out, GET OUT springs to mind) that made her harder to sympathize with.
I like the idea of Spike being the one to bridge the gap between Hank and the others...considering how he was often pushed to the side during season 5 and 6 byt the other characters, I get a perverse pleasure out of it *eg* |

Sorry I haven't reviewed in a while. Excellent, excellent story. I love how you do the characters, and the stare of doom thing was funny. Nice cliffhanger ending in the last chappie. Hope you update soon.
Author's Response: Every parent has some variant on the stare of doom ;) Glad you're still liking it! Thanks for the review! |

Wow.... Hank's really starting to live up to the authorative father-figure, isn't he? Hmm.... Wonder what else this is going to change.... It was very good (as it was to begin with). Please update again soon!!
Author's Response: Hank's finally reached his breaking point for politeness *g* Glad you're still enjoying it. And I will be updating soon. |

Another emotionally jarring chapter. Things are definitely spiraling downward for the Summers’ family and each one of them seems to think everything is his or her fault. If Hank even knew how many other problems were in that house. Poor Tara. I forgot about her. You’re doing a great job of just twisting everything tighter and tighter. Awesome.
Author's Response: Thanks! I think that everyone being so isolated in season 6 was part of what caused the downward turn everyone took.
Poor Tara...I do feel sorry for her too *g* |

This is a really great story. It's actually a bit more reasonable than the real thing, where Hank NEVER returned to Sunnydale---then again, "Buffy" rarely used a lot of reason. The characters are all done really well, and I like the addition of Hank--especially the way that you haven't painted him as a complete failure as a father. He isn't the best, but this "redeems" him a little. Please, update soon!
Author's Response: Thanks! I've read stories wiht Hank before and they're either totally fogiving or they completely thrash him. I'm glad my middle road is enjoyable :) More coming soon. I'm almost ready to send chaper 11 to my beta :) |

Loved this chapter. Dawn graduating to higher crime is definitely an awesome twist. It's really showing how Hank coming back could do mor eharm than good. The Willow conversation was perfect. So very Willow. Eek- poor Buffy. Still depressed.
Author's Response: Thanks! I'm glad you're enjoying the story and the characterizations :) I really want to show how Hank returning is a mixed bag...I'm glad it's working!

"Hank came back…could that mean that even when they left they didn’t always stay gone?" Nice job tying Hank to Angel in Buffy's mind. It's not a parallel I would have thought of, but it seems so natural. Speaking of Hank/ Angel parallels, I love the way Hank thinks he'll get his wayward girls back. Spike's reaction to Hank being back was pretty funny. It's interesting that someone who seemed to relish his roll of abusive lover would react like this. It creates a lot of interesting questions about the character (in a good way). Was he doing it because of his previously stated affection for Joyce? He's also pretty protective of the Bit. Is he protective of Buffy as well or perhaps jealous of someone who'd also mentally scarred Buffy. In the end, I think Hank's abandonment did a lot to screw up Buffy, particularly with men. And Spike has been one of the major beneficiary of the scars Hank has created. I love the emotional complexity you've developed. This is what BtVS was all about. take somewhat common problems and frame them within a supernatural life and death scenario. Excellent!
Author's Response: Thanks for another review!
I always saw Buffy as the girl who was left by all the important men in her life. First her father, then Angel, and finally Riley. Now she gets to the guy who's the least likely to leave and she won't open up. I swore to myself that this story wouldn't end up Spuffy, and it's a promise I intend to keep, but I also can't write Spike the way Marti Noxon did (eg using him for her own catharsis and therapy and changing the character in the process). The only road block I've come up against is that season 6 had a lot of Spuffy stuff in it. Hopefully I can make it work. I think Spike truely cares for all of the Summers' women and will try to help them. Through all of his and Joyce's chats (off screen ones...*g*) one would think the ex-husband would come up again *g*
Hank coming home would give Buffy hope, since he was the first to start the chain of leaving. I also wanted to show his complete inexperience with being a father to older girls. In the season 2 premire he tried to get Buffy to open up by buying her things, so I'm going to run with that trait as one of the few cannon things we know about Hank. |

This is me slacking off in class. :) I love how Hank found out. Hard headed Buffy refuses to learn from the past consequences of keeping secrets from people. Blood pudding?!? Love it. Love that you're including the Spike/Dawn relationship that Marti Noxon apparently felt was getting too 'sexual.' I also hope this is the end of Hank throwing money at his problem. Yes, paying off the mortgage was a very generous thing to do, but now that he'll be in on the full details of Buffy's life (and there better be full disclosure), he can try to connect with his kids on a better level. I'm also very interested to see how he treats Dawn knowing she isn't real.
Author's Response: Bad MJ! Slacking off in class...but sending me feedback, so yay ;) I always loved Dawn and Spike, so I was really supset when their relationship was written out of the season. We'll just have to wait and see if Bufy tells him about the Angely and Spikey (*snicker*)bits...Thanks for the review! |

Hank, the selfish bastard who doesn’t call his ex-wife or kids for over a year, so deserved this. Dawn’s descent into kleptomania speeds up. That was smart, remembering that! Hank having the hots for Willow was hysterical, especially considering he’s so sure he would have “landed” her. “I’ll just clean up” is the perfect last line. Hank is definitely trying to clean up his mess.
Author's Response: Thanks for the review!
Oh yeah, Hank totally deserves it, but I'm also trying to see if I can redeem him...I mean, if a merry nun rapist (Angel...and I'm totally stealing the description from another author, crazydiamondsue) can be redeemed, then why not Hank? Of course...he gets lumps ahoy for being completely self-centered and, well, a terrible father.
The Willow scene was so fun to write, because Hank, in my brain, is just so totally oblivious and sure of himself and Willow wouldn't go for him in a million years even if she wasn't Gay!Now. |
