Reviews for Running on Faith, Season Two

Michael J 01/27/05 - 10:24PM 13: 2.13: The Founder of the Initiative Signed
Eve's dead!! YAY!! Heather will love you for that one. I expected a lot more anger from Faith towards Xander, but you cleverly made the point that she'd been deceiving everyone already, so she remains level headed about everything. I love how you wrote the Dawn/Graham scene. Dawn's seen enough death in her lifetime to react well enough, but this one is different in that she could've actually saved him and was just a little too late. Can't wait to see Connor trying to be comfort guy. The Mayor still bores me to tears, which is no fault of your own, I just never liked him as a villain on BtVS. The fact that he founded the Initiative is a bold move to make. If anything, it should thoroughly piss Spike off. Still anxiously awaiting Angel's reappearance.

Author's Response: Yep, Eve's dead. Kind of a crappy Yep, Eve's dead. Kind of a crappy way to do away with her, but I really felt her story had run its course. Wolfram & Hart is all but gone and she doesn't have those Mayor Wilkins connections. Speaking of the Mayor, sorry he bores you to tears. He will be around for quite a while, not only because I feel he's integral to Faith's story, but also because I LOVE the Mayor. He's easily my favorite Buffy villain. Faith's pissed, but feeling sufficiently guilty. Spike, Connor, and Dawn, however, have no such issues. The Graham/Dawn scene was fun for me. A reviewer of the last chapter mentioned she liked having Graham. By then, of course, I'd killed him. I thought maybe I should have Dawn save him. Then I decided that was a cop-out. And so, we have the scene of the near miss which, as you noted, opens up a lot more possibilities plot-wise. I hope Connor being comfort guy will be amusing. Spike already doesn't like the Mayor, even without his Initiative involvement. Thanks for the review. Hope you like what's to come.

Mayor Wilkins founded the Initiative??? Interesting. Does make sense, in a way. They were evil (the head people, anyway), he was evil.... It all combines. It was very good... Neat wrap-up on the big battle thing last chapter--glad to see that you didn't go for the "everyone survived" angle.... Anyway, great chapter. Update again soon!

Author's Response: The Mayor: Yeah, I thought that would be a nice way to end the chapter. The Big Battle: the Markovics have been mostly out of the picture for quite a while. I felt I really needed to re-establish them as major players who pose a serious threat. Three dead and one kidnapped probably did that for me. I' surprised no one's mentioned something out of the scene between Vladimir, Anton, and Boris.

You sly dog, you. Wilkins is full of surprises. Nice one there at the end. Have we figured out who the client is? I can't remember. Oh, so sad that you killed both Gretchen and Graham. Poor Dawn tried to save him. Guilt trip on the way for her. Connor saves the day, again. Lots of action and intrigue in this chapter. Hard to top? We'll see. I can't wait for more.

Author's Response: Ah, yes, the Mayor is just so full of surprises. A longer explanation is coming at the beginning of the next ep (tentatively titles “The Condors and the Bees”), so I don’t want to ruin it for you. But the way I see it, it kind of made sense. Both were evil, both were government, and both represented the concepts of evil as corruption and evil as order (as opposed to evil as chaos- Ethan Rayne, Spike, etc.).
I haven’t said who the client is, but (for once) I’m not making this up as I go along. I do have someone in mind. So far, you only have a few clues. If you put it together, groovy. But I’m not telling ‘til I’m good and ready.
Sorry about Graham and Gretchen. You see, I’m a crappy typist and hitting “g” and SHIFT is just a real pain for me. Just kidding. As you mentioned, there was a lot of action in this chapter, so there had to be some casualties, right? Also, I was trying to re-establish the Markovics as a serious threat. No better way to do that than to off a couple characters that, due to my poor writing, I just couldn’t seem to get into the story. And poor Dawn? What about poor Xander? This is his second dead love interest in three years. But don’t worry. I’ll make it up to him. Thanks again for reading and reviewing. I’m so glad you’re still interested!

I can't believe this is all you have. lol. I just read like so much of your fics like just right now. PLz write more.

Author's Response: I'm working on the next chapter of my other story, Campus LIfe, at the moment., but I hope to have the next ep of RoF2 up before too long. If you like my stories, you can always check out "Campus Life." Thanks again for the review!

A violent, but exciting chapter. Spike's protectiveness of Dawn is touching and convinving. Poor Faith also seems to be going through a lot right now. The Connor/Dawn scenes however are getting a little cringesome, perhaps mainly due to the fact the Dawn is presented as more knowledgable and experienced than Connor, who is not exactly stupid. Nevertheless, am still enjoying... :)

Author's Response: We've officially reached the violent and exciting portion of the season. I think it makes sense that Spike would want Dawn to forever be his little nibblet. Faith is going through a low, but it shouldn't last too long. She's not Buffy who likes to wallow in her misery. Also, circumstances will be calling for action, which is Faith's forte. Sadly, you'll have to get used to Dawn/Connor, stop reading, or start skipping D/C scenes. I don't see those two breaking up any time soon and, on occasion, I like to write soft core porn. Dawn isn't more knowledgeable or experienced, she just knows what she wants and is becoming more forward. In a way, it's part of her development. I do realize "Little Dawnie" talking dirty would upset some people, but by now she's about 19 or 20 years old. Also, Dawn isn't perfectly comfortable with her sexuality yet. She does still feel awkward. Connor isn't stupid, but he is somewhat naive and, more importantly, unfamiliar with the social conventions of dating and the sexual lingo. Before Dawn, Connor version 1.0 had sex probably twice (I think we were to infer Connor and Cordy had sex after the baby revelation at the end of "Salvage"). More importantly, he wasn't bombarded with sexual references, jokes, etc. during his youth. I'm glad you're enjoying the story. I'm having a lot of fun writing it.

A very eventful chapter. I'm not a Dawn fan. I'm not a Connor fan. I don't exactly root for stories that bring them together. But, as I have said before, your stories make both characters incredibly likable in ways that the shows never could. Like the Spike/Faith tension and FAith's little backstory. Plus, the Mayor. You brought him funnily but menacingly to life in the cliffhanger, which set off the chapter effectively.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review. I'm glad I can make people like Dawn and Connor. I actually have a soft spot for Connor and most other hard luck cases. The Spike/Faith tension will probably last a while. I'm also glad you liked the cliffhanger.

OMG, you just killed a couple of characters. Bold move. Wilkins is actually trying to help. That's a first. I wonder how Faith is going to get out of that cage. Stupid Xander. Why couldn't he listen to Dawn. She was right. I wonder if he'll admit to it, if he doesn't get himself killed in the fight. Nice flowing chapter. I feel sorry for Spike. Faith's being mean to him. I hope they do kiss and make up.

Author's Response: Yep, characters are being purged. Wilkins is trying to help *Faith*. I'm not sure that's so new. How Faith gets out of the cage, whether Xander survives, whether or not Faith and SPike make up, and reactions to the collective mistakes of Faith's crew will all be revealed in the next exciting installment. Thanks for the review. I'm trying to keep it flowing.

Now we're talking. Exposition's done, let's get to the action. Still not liking Dawn/Connor, but you wrote Spike PERFECTLY. Speaking as a guy who has a younger sister, I would've reacted in the exact same "I know, but I'm not acknowledging it" manner that Spike did. Writing from personal experience there? Also, so glad the Markovics showed up and I love their ruthless efficiency. Hopefully Gretchen is dead dead dead and not Jossverse "I'll resurrect her in a few episodes" dead. She was getting on my nerves. I'm hoping that this step up in the action means Dawn comes back to the forefront as leader and Watcher. Also, I find myself missing Angel (I love how you write Faith/Angel scenes) and hoping for an appearance soon. It seems that after a slow start, you're ready to kick this season into gear. Can't wait.

Author's Response: Thanks again for another too kind review. Exposition is done. For the moment anyway. The action will hopefully be pretty non-stop for a while. Sorry you don’t like D/C, but you should try to get used to them because they’re not going anywhere. Besides, if I broke them up, I’d have both of them both pair up with people that would REALLY offend you. Still, Connor is a part of Dawn’s growth and vice versa. They’re going to have an adult relationship, thus showing that they are actually adults. Kind of. Spike’s reaction . . . I don’t know where that came form, really. What I said about D/C also goes for the Markovics. You should be happy to know that they too are not going anywhere. Also rest assured that when I kill someone, the bastard stays dead. Usually. Gretchen will not be returning, which is actually sad news for some. Also, I seem to have good timing. No sooner do you start missing Angel then I bring him back. I plan on Angel being either the next episode or the one after that. Hopefully he’ll bring his Kevlar.

Yes! You know by now that I've been waiting for you to follow up on what happened between Faith and the Mayor last season. While the Mayor isn't a favorite character of mine, he is quite pivotal to Faith's character (probably the most important next to Angel), so I'm looking forward to more of their story. I have to admit I'm a bit biased against Dawn/Connor for a few reasons, one of which being that I love them NOT being together in Campus Life (I love Emily, sue me). I do like Connor bumbling his way through being a gentleman (his matter-of-fact way of offeirng his jacket was hilarious), but I hope you don't pigeonhole Dawn's development into the Connor relationship. I was really enjoying watching her grow as a self assured woman last season and I hope to get more of that. I also enjoyed the respect that Faith is giving her, so I'm waiting for an explosion between the two over Faith keeping the Mayor a secret.

Author's Response: Thanks for reviewing. Yes, I do know you’ve been waiting for me to follow up on Faith killing the Mayor. So now you know why I never showed that scene. The reason I didn’t have Dawn and Connor together in *Campus Life* was that I did plan to have them together here. I don’t want to write to D/C fics. However, in this story, Connor’s attraction to Dawn fits pretty well. He’s certainly attracted to authoritative brunettes. I’m a little disappointed you’re afraid I’ll pigeonhole Dawn. I’m also sad to read you don’t like the Mayor. I LOVE the Mayor. He’s just this wonderful mix of goofy and evil. But, as you noted, he is an important player in Faith’s inner-struggle. That’s why he’s in this fic. Unfortunately, you may be robbed of the explosion over Faith’s keeping secrets. There will be much more immediate physical threats in the near future. By the time they’re over, the group will probably be on the same page regarding Faith’s decision.

A good chapter, with some funny one-liners... 'for the love of freddy krueger!'. I loved the inclusion of Lorne in the start of the chapter, he added a little je ne sais pas to the fic. The only problem with the chapter, and thats being nit-picky, is the length. Perhaps it could have been cut a little...but still, I enjoyed. Keep it ip!

Author's Response: Thanks as always for the review. I hear you on the length issue, but a whole lot was cut already. The chapter was originally close to 7,000 words. I pushed most of the fight scene at the end off to next chapter, but really wanted to leave a little bit in there. I cut an entire sequence of Riley and Xander plotting and arguing. There were a couple other smaller sequences I did away with as well. This was probably about as tight as I could get it.

Oh! Figures that Xander and ANYONE from the Initiative would want to get rid of the mayor. Great twist... I feel really sorry for everyone in the hotel about now. Also, I haven't mentioned this, but it's GREAT that you brought Graham back. Much less annoying than Riley.

Author's Response: I thought Graham would make an interesting character. With his knowledge of and experience in supernatural affairs, he seemed a natural fit for the Watchers. But he has his own particular view of things. He'll be very hierarchical, having been a soldier. Also, he should come in handy for something else. Provided, of course, that he survives.

"He's got stupid hair". Spike has learned from the master, as in Angel. So funny. I'm glad that you made Dawn upset about Cordelia. No woman would want to be compared to the likes of her. Of course, it wasn't Cordy at the time. Poor Faith. She and Spike are on the outs. That kind of bums me out. I really like them together in your fic. And the surprise ending. Gotta tell ya, I didn't see that one coming. Good holdoff on that. I think it ended the chapter very nicely. I like the fact that Dawn took the initiative with Connor. She likes him, he's so inexperienced with people, period, so she needed to take control. Girl knows what she wants. And Spike will still smell them a mile away even with the shower. Story is moving along very nicely.

Author's Response: Thanks as always for the review. Yeah, Dawn being jealous of Cordy isn't great. Connor will probably have some issues with Dawn in chapters to come. But Dawn will be "taking control" in a lot of ways in the rest of the season. Faith and Spike on the outs makes me sad too. I'm going to have to do somehting about that soon. But not too, too soon. As far as what Spike will "smell" . . . . well, you'll jsut have to keep reading. Glad you liked the ending. The beginnig of the next chapter will have the scene I've been asked about a dozen times.

Great story 10/10 keep up the good work loving it so far

Author's Response: And I thank you for your support. I'm working on the next chapter of this and Campus LIfe, so hopefully I can get one up before too long.

Yes!!! You finally updated it!!! (I have a short patience limit. Sorry. I can't handle waiting for chapter installments.) Great cliffhanger! (Even if it wasn't meant to be a cliffhanger, it turned out like one.) It's great in general. Please update again soon!

Author's Response: Sorry for the long wait. Christmas break is a time for family (and school work). Classes and work have been a pain since I got back. I may be slow in postig future installments. If so, please accept my apologies in advance.
