I love the fact that Willow had to repeatedly cast a sleep spell on Dana. (Like pepper spray supposedly has no effect on unstable people) It is your attention to these little details that make me so engrossed by your story. You just don't throw punches and stop the conflict with violence. You have so much thought into your fight scenes and complex plot ideas that make me love this story. Everything build upon itself. The mansion is such a brilliant place to bring all of the characters to face their fears. The scene between Connor and Angel was so intense. Connor "said" so many of the things that had bothered me about AtS season 5. Vail's office scene was so good. Very chilling. I loved it. The ending *gah* Torture! That was the mother of all cliffhangers. This chapter completely rocked! Yay!
Author's Response: Yep, Dana is a special girl. I’m glad you like the emotional violence. The best pain on Buffy came from words and actions, not fists. It’s easier for someone you love to hurt you than someone you hate. Someone you hate has to *try* to hurt you. Someone you love can do it without even realizing it. I’m glad you thought the chapter rocked. This was one of my favorite cliffhangers as well. |

This chapter is absolutely scary and creepy. I think it's one of your best chapters to date. Vail's mansion would be a house of horrors. The only thing that might have been interesting to see would be all of Angel's dead friends going after them. In reality, he did indirectly get each of them killed. They died because of him. It's good to see that Willow can overcome the effects and help them. And as I still say, poor Lorne. Angel made such a big mistake not trying to really help Connor. Instead he struck a deal with the devil and everyone has to pay. I just want to feel that more from him. There seems to not be a lot of guilt for that from Angel.
Author's Response: You get to see Angel's guilt in later chapters and, if I write it, season 2. But this isn't his story, so I'm trying to not overdo Angel stuff. |

This reminds me a lot of the Buffy season 4 Halloween episode “Fear Itself.” The difference: I think this is scarier (as opposed to funnier). The episode is creepy while also offering insights into the characters. Although I was never felt confused, I was even fooled a couple of times by what was happening. The fact that the haunting in the house was related to the fears and memories of those being haunted was a great way to be scary and delve into the characters. Your description of Quar’Toth as seen by those in the final room was awesome! I love the idea that the realm attacked you psychologically as well as physically. Willow falling into depression because of wind- perfect. And finally, that ending! I had to push on and read the next chapter immediately. I loved that ending.
Author's Response: Thanks for the review! I’d hoped the ending would be a bit of a surprise. Not to go into too much detail for fear of spoiling, but I liked the idea of essentially creating a likable character, then ripping him away. Besides, I think there’s a lot of story left in the character that made an appearance at the end. The haunted house sprung from the fact that I wanted to write at least one real horror episode. So I’m very happy you found it scary. |

The greatest part of this episode was finding out that the haunting in the house was directly linked to the one being haunted, their past, fears, etc. Even better was getting to experience those hauntings to gain insight into each character. And lets talk about the cliffhanger of an ending…so not right to do to a person! But also unexpected and gripping.
Author's Response: I wanted to do an actual “horror” episode, and Vail’s haunted mansion was the best I could think up. I too thought it would be fun, though not terribly original, if the horrors of the house were attached to the individuals being haunted. And yes, I thought it was great way to display some mild in sight into the characters. I’m also glad you loved/loathed the ending. *Spoiler Ahead* I thought it’d would be fun if the moment Angel thought everything was all sewn up was the moment it had actually all fallen apart. |
